UTILITY VESSEL MAKES “WAVES”

ISSUE 14 FEBRUARY 2015
With an emphasis on safety as well as versatility, the new
Hydraulic Gantry is an impressive and innovative lifting safety
system that boasts a lifting capacity of 350 tons. The system
integrates engineering, design, production and services
processes to enable this new piece of equipment to reach
unprecedented levels of quality and service.
“In the relatively small rigging market of Southern Africa,
versatility is the name of the game. The ability to be versatile and
never say no to a request is what customers want to hear and we
have found over 26 years that staying ahead is about investing in
the quiet times and being ready for the busy times with a full tool
box. This gantry investment is about a belief in the return of the
good times for Southern Africa,” explain Rob Lovemore.
The Hydraulic Gantry has increased height capabilities and
ultimate safety features, including the LIFT-N-LOCK ® cam
locking technology, which provides true continual load protection
throughout the duration of the lift. In the unlikely event a lift
cylinder would lose pressure, the LIFT-N-LOCK ® safety system
will immediately engage to hold the load in place, protecting both
the riggers, those on site as well as the load.
Added to the safety features, the hydraulic gantry can work in
confined spaces or low overhead areas while remaining mobile
and easily transportable.
“At a cost of approximately R3.85m, this is not an investment
taken lightly. Considering that specialised rigging
tools are not used daily, it is essential that the business has
sufficient critical mass to carry this investment between
projects. But in the same sentence, it is critical to have access to
the Gantry at short notice and thus the investment in specialised
tooling for serious players is unavoidable," says Lovemore.

In 2003, visonary leader Danie van den Heever and his wife
Judy established a haven for hope near Hillcrest in KZN. Realising
the need for positive action to address the effects of the social
crisis in the Embo Valley, they drove the process to form an
inspirational organisation entitled 'Focus on iThemba'- the isiZulu
word for 'hope'. With generous support from donors such as
Lovemore Bros, Focus on iThemba has grown from strength to
strength.
Lovemore Bros. has been proudly supporting Focus on
iThemba for a number of years, support of which has been
channelled directly into supporting the iThemba Schools
Enterprise Development Programme. This project focuses on the
capacity-building of small business owners in the community as
well as that of the people who work for them in order to create
flourishing enterprises that are valued and well-supported by the
communities in which they are situated.
- Proud Supporters of Focus On iThemba
“The support of Lovemore Bros, has enabled Focus on
iThemba to upskill the owners of four carefully selected creches in
Embo with business skills including financial management,
business administration and human resources. Equipping
business owners with these skills will ensure the sustainability of
these enterprises as profitable ventures. The principals of the four

creches are currently furthering their education and we are proud
to report that at the end of 2014 all will hold formal qualifications in
Early Childhood Development (NQF Level 4),” says Amanda
Seidler from Focus on iThemba.
“The need for good educare facilities in rural areas and informal
settlements is critical in order to ensure that the foundations for
later development are laid in the vital first six years of each child's
life. Quality pre-school education is not considered a luxury, but a
necessity for the healthy mental, physical and emotional
development of a child. Lovemore Bros. investment enables
Focus on iThemba to facilitate the formal training of ground level
teaching staff and caregivers at the creches to ensure optimal
stimulation of the young minds in their care,” says Amanda.
Lovemore Bros is proud to be in partnership with an
organisation committed to shaping future leaders by striving for
continuous improvement in education, excellence in parenting,
lifting the awareness of high risk behaviours and through
dedicated team work always putting the needs of children first.

Nampak Flexible – New Press Scores a Perfect “10”

Southern African Shipyards - New Utility Vessel Makes “Waves”
Southern African Shipyards, a proudly South African company,
is the largest Shipyard in Southern Africa and also boasts of still
having the record for building the largest Ship on the African
Continent, and now one more accolade can be added to their
impressive reputation.
Southern African Shipyards was recently commissioned to build
utility vessels as a result of the partnership between Smit
Amandla Marine and South African Petroleum Refineries (Sapref)
in order to increase the efficiency of Sapref's offshore tanker
terminal. The vessel will provide offshore assistance and
emergency support for tankers calling at the offshore terminal.
“The commissioning of this vessel is another example of
continuous operational improvement and demonstrates the
serious nature of operating a key asset such as the offshore
terminal according to high safety standards.” SAPREF Managing
Director Ton Wielers.
The 16 m vessel, named Sibanye, meaning “We Are One”,
was moved by Lovemore Bros Lowbed Division from the
Southern African Shipyards' facility in Durban Bayhead to the
port. The commissioning of these vessels has not only created
new jobs but has also ensured that jobs were saved for the many
skilled people working at the shipyard.
“Because of the height of the vessel, securing it properly was
a priority and having worked with Southern African Shipyards for
so long, it was a privilege to work on this job and move this new
vessel,” says Peter Heyns, Technical Consultant for the
Lovemore Bros Lowbed Division.
Nampak Flexible is the largest consumer of BOPP, PET and foil in
South Africa and their diverse range of products include reel
stock for blue chip FMCG customers as well as supplying
products to the FMCG, wine, industrial and medical markets.
A first of its type in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nampak Flexible has
invested in a new Windmöller & Hölscher Heliostar 10 colour
gravure printer. Imported from Germany, the new printer uses
green technology while being both efficient and reducing
Nampak's carbon footprint. The machine is capable of printing at
speeds of 400m a minute.
“It's refreshing to have the advanced technology and the
capacity to remain globally competitive. Designed specifically
for high-speed, quick-drying, intense colour printing, the
Heliostar is certain to deliver huge benefits to Nampak Flexible
and to the packaging industry in general,” says Operations and
Technical Director, Gerald Chotu.
The Lovemore Bros Heavy Rigging Division moved the press
from the port to the Lovemore Bros Warehouse before it was
moved to the Nampak Flexible facility in Pinetown where the
team rigged the press into position and assembled it.
“Lovemore completed this project in conjunction with an OEM supplier under tight deadlines. The project was completed safely and to strict European standards,” says Technical Consultant for the Heavy Rigging Division, Simone Griesse
FP Engineering gets International Stamp of Approval
Lovemore Bros Lowebed Division moving one of the first U Stamp Certified steel pressure tanks manufactured by FP Engineering to the Durban port.
Having taking 7 months to achieve, FP Engineering joins only a
handful of other companies in South Africa that have certification
from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This gives
FP Engineering the opportunity to manufacture pressure vessels
locally to an international standard that could be used anywhere in
the world.
“This puts us on the world map, which is fantastic, not only for
us, but for Durban and South Africa,” says FP Engineering
Director, Mark Potter.
This sought after certification for the 35 year old family business
was a huge advantage for their plans to grow and expand. This
certification now opens the way for future plans, which includes
buying new machinery and training personnel. The biggest
challenge remains to convince the world market and the South
African government to buy local,” says Potter.
Assisting FP Engineering with their first job with the new “U”
stamp certification, the Durban based engineering company was
assigned the construction of 4 steel tanks for the oil works at Port
Gentil, Gabon. These 9 m long and 3.2 m in diameter, 10-ton
pressure vessels were made from carbon steel and moved by the
Lovemore Bros Lowbed Division from the FP Engineering factory
in Glen Anil to a storage facility in the Maydon Wharf area, where
they were then shipped to Gabon.
“This is a great boost for us. It gives us a pronounced
marketing edge in the manufacturing industry in South Africa,”
says Potter.
