of SPECTRUM Magazine.

While doing my editorial for the latest edition of SPECTRUM,

I can proudly give my thumbs up on our team’s

organizational values & our client-driven approach that

remains the prime most reasons for our success. We’ve

created a lot of wealth for our clients, but what deem us

special are the personal relationships we created with

them. We are diligently committed to use all our resources

It is a great pleasure for me to join you on the celebration of the 40th anniversary of CGS in Saudi Arabia. Let me express to CGS my heartfelt congratulations on this very special occasion! 40 years is a long period especially in a fast-changing world where short-termism is the rule and long-termism the exception. It also shows a typically Swiss quality: once we decide to do something, we stick to it. Continuity is important to Swiss people.

This is also valid for our bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We are celebrating an anniversary this year: 60 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Saudi Arabia. It was in 1956 that the Kingdom opened its first Embassy in Bern. Shortly afterwards Switzerland followed suit and opened an Embassy in Jeddah. We have edited a book to commemorate this important event.

Our relations are excellent. I encounter a lot of good will and sympathy in KSA for CH. Many Saudis I meet know, have been to CH, spend their holidays there or even own proper-ties in CH. CH is perceived very much as a prime tourism destination. Saudis and Arabs from the Gulf are coming in growing numbers, which makes our tourism industry very happy.

I have also noticed, though, that apart from its image as tourism destination, there is not so much awareness of the economic profile of CH. Everybody knows that CH is prosper-ous country, that it has high quality products such as watches, knifes; chocolate. In addition, most people know about the Swiss banks. Actually, there is much more to it.

The CH economy is widely diversified, it is strong in many sectors; and it is highly competitive. In the Global Competi-tiveness Reports, the Swiss economy is usually ranked number one. The same applies to innovation. CH usually comes at the top of the Global Innovation Index. CH is a small country, but its economy is sizeable.

The economic edge of Switzerland relies among other things on a liberal economic environment. It relies also on the dynamism of our private sector. In Switzerland, we are very proud of our companies. There is a high number of Swiss companies, which are competing successfully in the worldwide markets. In KSA, for instance more than 100 Swiss companies have established themselves. Some have been here for a long time, such as Nestlé and ABB, and have huge operations. Interesting is also the volume of our exports to KSA, it amounts to 5 billion CHF (USD).

For the Swiss economic presence to become more visible and in order to connect the Swiss companies, we have founded this year the Swiss Business Network Saudi Arabia.

ا�ربعين بالذكرى ا�حتفال بمناسبة مشاركتكم سروري دواعي لمن إنه لتأسيس الشركة السعودية �نتاج غرف التبريد واسمحوا لي با�عراب عن تهانينا القلبية في هذه المناسبة الخاصة. تعد ٤٠ عاما فترة طويلة نسبيا, خصوصا في عالمنا سريع التغير, حيث التغيرات قصيرة المده هي القاعدة النمط تماما يظهر وهذا االستثناء!. هو طويله لفترات واالستمرار السويسري النوعي! عندما نقرر فعل شي، نلتزم به، �ن االستمرارية مهمة

للسويسريين.

وهذا ينطبق أيضا على عالقتنا بالمملكة العربية السعودية، حيث نحتفل هذا العام بالذكرى السنوية الستون للعالقات الدبلوماسية بين سويسرا والمملكة، حيث افتتحت المملكة أول سفارة لها في عام ١٩٥٦ في مدينة بيرن، وحذت سويسرا حذوها بعد ذلك بوقت قصير وافتتحت سفارة لها

في جدة، وقد قمنا بإصادر كتاب ل½حتفال بهذا الحدث الهام.

العربية المملكة بين وانسجام تعاطف وهناك ممتازة عالقاتنا تعد السعودية وسويسرا حيث التقيت بالكثير من السعوديين الذين يعرفون سويسرا ومنهم من يقضون عطالتهم أو يملكون عقارات هناك. وتعد سويسرا وجهة سياحية رئيسية بحيث يتوافد السعودييون والعرب من

الخليج بأعداد متزايدة مما جعل السياحة مزدهرة لدينا.

بغض لسويسرا ا�قتصادية بالناحية كاِف وعي وجود وقد الحظت عدم منتجات لديها بأن الجميع يعلم حيث سياحية, وجهة كونها النظرعن والبنوك والشوكوالتة، والسكاكين، الساعات، مثل عالية جودة ذات

السويسرية، ولكن في الواقع هناك أكثر من ذلك بكثير.

يتنوع ا�قتصاد في سويسرا ويعد منافسا قويا في كثير من القطاعات، وينطبق العالمية، التنافسية التقارير في ا�ولى المرتبة عادة ويحتل ا�بتكار أعلى مؤشر تأتي سويسرا في ا�بتكار حيث الشيء نفسه على

العالمي. سويسرا بلدا صغير ولكن إقتصادها كبير.

يعتمد ا�قتصاد السويسري على بيئة اقتصادية متحررة وعلى ديناميكية الشركات من العديد فهناك بشركاتنا جدا نفتخر نحن الخاص. القطاع السويسرية التي تنافس بنجاح في ا�سواق العالمية فعلى سبيل المثال، يوجد أكثر من ١٠٠ شركة سويسرية تعمل في المملكة العربية السعودية ومن بي) بي و(أي (نستلة) مثل ضخم أداء ذات عريقة شركات وهناك السعودية، العربية المملكة إلى صادراتنا حجم ل½هتمام, المثيرأيضا

It is an autonomous organization, but the Embassy is fully supporting it. We hope thus to contribute to the develop-ment of business relations between our two countries.

I am convinced that the bilateral relationship between KSA and CH, though already very good, will further grow. There is the FTA that entered into force between EFTA and GCC in 2014. We are, together with our EFTA partners, the only European country to have such a FTA with the GCC and with KSA. It is being fully implemented now. Among many other benefits, this FTA cuts the import duties between our two countries. It will certainly give an important boost to our trade and economic relations. However, there is also a Double Taxation Agreement, which is going to be signed soon.

I am particularly happy to see CGS developing and flourish-ing. CGS is the result of a real partnership between Switzer-land and KSA. Especially between Mr. Esmat Al-Saady and late Mr. Albert Grunenfelder. They launched CGS as a start-up 40 years ago. Ever since, it has grown impressively into a large mid-size company with more than 600 employ-ees.

This is an important contribution to the development of our bilateral relations. Once again my heartfelt congratulations! I wish CGS great success also in the future.

وسويسرا السعودية العربية المملكة بين العالقات أن تماما مقتنع أنا اتفاقية وهناك نموا. ستزداد أنها إال ا¦ن, جدا جيدة أنها من وبالرغم التجارة الحرة التي دخلت حَيز التنفيذ بين رابطة التجارة الحَرة لدول الخليج البلد نعتبر ونحن .٢٠١٤ عام في الخليجي التعاون ودول مجلس العربي الوحيد جنبا إلى جنب مع شركائنا في الرابطة ا�وروبية للتجارة الحرة الذين والمملكة الخليجي التعاون مجلس دول مع ا­تفاقية هذه مثل نكّون

العربية السعودية، ويجري حاليا تنفيذها بالكامل.

ومن بين العديد من الفوائد ا�خرى، تخفض هذه ا­تفاقية رسوم ا­ستيراد واالقتصادية، التجارية لعالقاتنا هامة دفعة سيعطي وهذا بلدينا، بين الضريبي. التبادل اتفاقية وهي جديدة اتفاقية توقيع سيتم وقريبا وتزدهر، تتطور التبريد غرف ­نتاج السعودية الشركة أرى أن يسعدني كثمرة شراكة حقيقية بين سويسرا والمملكة العربية السعودية، وخاصة بين السيد عصمت الّسعدي والسيد ألبرت غروننفلدر. لقد أطلقت هذه اكبر من واحدة إلى الفت بشكل نمت ثم عاما ٤٠ قبل بداية الشركة الشركات المتوسطة, حيث انها تضم أكثر من ٦٠٠ موظف، وهذا ما ساهم

في تنمية عالقاتنا.

ومن هنا أتقّدم بتهانّي القلبية مرة أخرى وأتمنى للشركة نجاحا كبيرا في المستقبل.

Lean ProductionThe implementation of Lean in the CGS’ factory has not only brought significant efficiency improvements but also a change of mindset among staff and management.

To make CGS fit to serve the market for the next 40 years.CGS management has introduced Lean at CGS. The introduction of a flow line in assembly has reduced the delivery lead-time considerably along with increasing efficiency.

Lean is a management methodology focused on delivering what the customer is willing to pay for benefit. Activities that do not add value to the product or customer are defined as waste and should be reduced or eliminated to free up resources to be used for adding value.

Toyota is the most famous implementer of Lean and the Lean philosophy is now widely implemented worldwide. In the Middle East and Saudi Arabia, Lean is now being applied across different industries by companies wishing tosustainably improve performance and competitiveness.

In the year of the 40th anniversary of the founding of CGS, the management of CGS in their relentless drive towards excellence felt a new impetus was necessary to make CGS fit for the next 40 years. They wished to increase CGS’ ability to serve customer needs as well as to maintain CGS’ position as the premium supplier in the market. The challenges identified to achieving this were both internal and external to CGS. On the customer side, the customers were requiring ever more flexibility with ever more demanding delivery schedules while maintaining CGS’ quality standards.

في عمليات تجميع المنتجات الذي مكن المصنع من تقليص مدة التسليم

بشكل ملحوظ مع زيادة الكفاءه.

الشرق منطقة في القطاعات ومختلف العالم أنحاء في الشركات كبرى

المنهجية من أجل خلق ا�وسط عامًة وفي السعودية خاصًة على هذه

تحسينات مستمره في العمليات والتي بدورها تزيد من القدرة التنافسية

على نحو مستمر لهذه الشركات.

فقد ا�ربعين عامها في للتقدم CGS شركة من الدائم السعي وفي

التطور وهذا القادمة. سنة ا�ربعين تحديات لمواكبة منهجيتها طورت

ا�فضل تقديم على قدرتها زيادة إلى الشركة تطلع سبيل في يأتي

An external view, through Four Principles consultants, was brought in to challenge the team to help them challenge the status quo. The Lean principles (Pull, One-Piece-Flow, Takt and Zero Defects) were then applied by the team to design the solutions for the issues identified. The solutions were then piloted and refined together by staff and consultants on the shop floor. After refinement, the final solutions were implemented and the necessary standards defined to maintain the improvements.

Using Lean principles, the team of CGS staff and consul-tants designed and implemented an assembly flow line in the CGS plant in Riyadh. This resulted in a lead-time reduc-tion of 43% and therefore improved customer service, greater flexibility to meet customer delivery schedules, better ability to control production and ensure quality, reduced space requirements, and an increase in efficiency of 13%. Four Principles is a Lean / Operations Manage-ment consultancy based in the Middle East specializing in the region and the typical type of implementation problems encountered in the Middle East. Four Principles has a strong reputation built though having worked with large recognized brands in the region as has had considerable success improving processes for companies in the region assisting them in particular to implement improvements on the ground quickly. These improvements have covered processes in Development, Procurement, Manufacturing, Distribution Sales, and Administration.

Saudi Dairy and Foodstuff Company (SADAFCO) is a leading, excellent, Saudi Arabia-based company whose activities include local production, importation of contract packed product and distribution and marketing of a wide range of food products.

The company portfolio includes Dairy Products, Ice Cream, Tomato Paste, Snacks, and Drinks. Its core products are marketed under its flagship Saudi brand while other brand names in its portfolio are Crispy, Baboo and Majestique.

SADAFCO currently offers around 100 Stock Keeping Units (SKU), most of which require controlled, chilled, or Frozen Storage and transportation when being distributed to its approximately 35,000 customers.

The Saudi Dairy and Foodstuff Company (SADAFCO) story began on 21 April 1976 when a joint venture between three dairy companies in Jeddah, Madinah, and Dammam was formed between Saudi, Kuwaiti, and European business persons and the company began production at the Jeddah Factory in 1977.

Ten years later the European partners sold their shares to the Saudi and Kuwaiti shareholders and in 1990, the three companies merged into one to officially form Saudi Dairy and Foodstuff Company. An initial public offering (IPO) led to the company’s listing on the Saudi Arabian Stock Exchange, Tadawul, on 23 May 2005.

Burj Al Hamam Restaurantsمطاعم برج الحمامBurj Al Hamam is a traditional Lebanese restaurant in Riyadh. It has been established in 1979 on Takhassussi road in the immediate neighborhood of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. Apart from its dining facilities for families and singles, it includes a take-away section and catering for events, mainly in private homes. In the mid 80’s, a sit-down and take-away outlet was established on Aruba Road. This expansion was followed by quick-serve outlet in the food court of the prestigiousAl Faisaliah shopping mall in 2000. Given the ever-increasing demand for quality food at moderate prices, Burj Al Hamam initiated a few years back a growth initiative. It was decided to invest not only in additional restaurants under the brand name Burj Al Hamam BISTRO but also in further food court outlets in upscale malls under the brand SHEBBAK BEIRUT by Burj AlHamam.

Today, our business serves on average about 4’000 meals a day; this typically increases over the weekends to more than 5’000. Thus far, food preparation was done at our main restaurant on Takhassussi Road. With the growth in demand, we reached the limits of what activities could be executed at this site. We thus built a kitchen at the outskirts of Riyadh that is fully dedicated to the food preparation for all our outlets where the final steps in the cooking take place.

From the outset of our project planning, we wanted this kitchen to be state-of-the-art, not least because we were committed to have it certified for its compliance with established food hygiene standards. We needed well above a dozen cool rooms. They had to be separate for incoming goods and processed foods as well as for vegetable/fruits,

meat, poultry, and fish. As in earlier smaller projects, we had our kitchen equipment supplier offer for the delivery and installation of these cold rooms.

In view of the project size, we wanted a second bid. We knew CGS for many years from the work they did on our Reefer Trucks and from a small installation in the Takhassussi kitchen. We appreciated the quality of their work but first hesitated to ask them for their offer since we expected them to be much more expensive than the kitchen equipment suppliers. We will not regret having invited CGS for the bidding of this million riyals business. Already during the bidding process, we were impressed by their professional-ism. This was expressed by way of their offering different technical solutions and design options; always with descrip-tions and explanations that were not only understandable to our MEP consultant but also to us lay people. We also got at a very early stage a detailed delivery and installation sched-ule, which was part of the offer with the firm commitment to adhere to the short timelines we had in mind. After some back and forth inside our own organization, we gave the contract to CGS. As expected, it was considerably more expensive than other offers in absolute terms; but we realized that we were to get a product superior to all others: temperature-controlled storage for fresh, chilled and frozen food that would preserve their quality at all times and make food hygiene easy to apply.

Our general contractor, our MEP consultant and we ourselves noticed the attention to details by the installation team that would continue until the project was handed over to us. There was precise and timely planning and coordina-tion of the tasks that needed to be done by others, in particu-lar the general contractor. This team effort led to the cool rooms and all the needed accessories to be commissioned exactly as promised during the contract negotiations.

We are proud of our kitchen that will be the backbone of our “back-of-the-house” operations leading to the serving of top quality Lebanese food in our restaurants, bistros, food court outlets, and catering.

PECs brief Descreption:The Pre-Fabricated Electrical Centers are made with high consideration of satisfying every customer needs, as the design is a modular one, which provides a high level offlexibility in order to cover a wide range of applications. That includes outdoor switching stations, single transformer stations, multi-transformer stations or generating electric centers. In addition, a special arrangement for pressurizedPECs can be provided for special applications in hazardous areas. The primary voltage can vary. However, the second-ary voltage (for transformer station PECs) can be medium voltage or low voltage as per the customer requirements.

Furthermore:Prefabricated electric center is built on a hot-dipped galvanized base frame in such a way that the whole center can be lifted and carried as a single unit. Since these centers are tailor made, their contents vary depending on the specific needs of a customer. For example, a PEC might contain some or all of the following: generator, transformer, metal clad switchgears, outdoor load break switches or breakers, batteries and battery chargers, auxiliary transformers, AC/DC distribution panels, fire detection systems, air-conditioning systems, and many other equipment.
