USA Sprintcar driver Josh Fisher is back in the seat after his tour down under. Driving for the Bruce Stephens team, Josh raced at a number of track including the Classic at Warrnam-bool.His new car looks great, however It was a bumpy start to Josh ’ s 2011 campaign, but he came away from the LA Race-way in LaMonte, Missouri knowing that he has a fast racecar. It was fortunate that the Smithton, Missouri driver could even race, after smoking a motor in practice the week before. Jack Hockett came to the rescue, and Josh was able to use his motor.

I have to thank Jack Hockett," he says. "We blew our motor in practice the week before and he let us use his at LaMonte. With-out him, we probably weren't going to be racing."

LaMonte hosted the first race ever for the new ASCS-Warrior regional sanction. The series replaces the Winged Outlaw Warri-ors in the Missouri area. Josh drew outside row four for his heat, but received a break when someone in front of him didn't make the call. "We were able to run from sixth to third in the heat. The track was slicking off in a hurry and the car just wasn't quite right for it."

Adjustments were made for the main event, and Josh drew a spot outside of row two. His run up front didn't last long. "We went down into the first corner and got crossed up right away and spun out," he says. "I had to go back to 20th and we were able to take off again."

The defending Lake Ozark Speedway champion went to work immediately, advancing forward on a track that some found it hard to find passing room. "I was really the only one passing a bunch of cars there," says Josh. "It took rubber in certain spots out there, but no one was really running in it. They were running in one spot, and I was able to move around on the track and move up there."

Soon he was vying for the top five again, but that would come to an abrupt halt. "We were able to get back up to seventh," says Josh. "About that time, ( Jonathan ) Cornell and ( Matt ) Cov-

ington got together. They spun and I didn't have anywhere to go. I got into the side of Cornell and he ran over the top of me. We were done after that."

Josh knows that the Ozark Barge & Dock Service #86 was fast on Saturday. "We definitely had a top five car...even coming from the back," he says. "We just didn't have any luck to go with it on Saturday."

It looks like it will be a couple of weeks before Josh can hit the track again. "We're not sure when we will get our next race in," he says. "The next Warrior race ( May 6 at Tri-City ) was post-poned, and it looks like the Lake ( Ozark Speedway ) is open-

ing back up around April 30. That may be our next race. We plan on running the Warrior schedule. Our motor is getting looked at next week."

With Rowden Speedway, LLC taking over from the Gundaker family at Lake Ozark Speedway, central Missouri is back in busi-ness for weekly racing on Saturday nights. Josh also has plans with Hockett on Sundays. "We're also planning on running Jack Hockett's sprint car at Jesse Hockett's Double X Speedway on Sunday nights," he says. "I'm not sure what their schedule is yet, but we'll be there most Sundays running for Jack."

Josh stated “ everything was going good. I won my heat and was on my way to winning my first race of the year and blew the motor up that I borrowed from Jack Hockett. I only had four laps left. So it kinda sucks.

Rolling Thunder Raceway is up and running again and held its first meeting under the management group Rolling Thunder Raceway Promotions Incorpo-rated ( RTRP ) on April 17th 2011

As part of the revised structure and operating practice, RTRP ’ s goal is to enable more people to compete more often. This will be achieved by making it easier and cheaper to start racing and then to provide the op-portunity for competitors to race regularly at a venue close to Melbourne, this should save on travel and accommodation costs.

RTRP is interested in developing a long term association with various classes of speedway with the view to working with drivers, associations in mutually beneficial outcomes to all parties.

As RTRP is in its infancy, we are looking to engage the support of various classes during the de-velopment phase of the facility, that are willing to be flexible in relation to prize money amounts and experimenting in various ways of providing entertainment value to the spectators at the venue.

RTRP will initially be focused on ensuring that prize money amounts and other costs are initially contained, however RTRP support the notion that prize money increases to be commensurate with increasing spectator satisfaction and spectator/competitor support. RTRP invite the various associations/classes to contact RTRP with the view to discussing a long term mutually beneficial arrangement.

Given that the RTR venue is located just 50km from the Melbourne CBD and the impending rise in fuel prices, RTRP believe that the venue is well placed to service the speedway industry in the future.

Pit/Paddock Area Upgrade.Upgrade of the pit area has already commenced. Food and additional toilet facilities have been installed in the paddock/pit area. The general public will be allowed to enter this area without an additional fee. The hot area and Pit Lane area will be restricted to competitors and crew only.

Upgrade to the public area. The area from turn 2 around to turn 4 will initially be out of bounds to the general public whilst upgrade works are being undertaken.

RTRP intend to video all events and provide highlights of all races ( all classes ) on You Tube. The videos will be accessible from either www.fmg.au.com or www.youtube.com/RollingThunderTVDVD ’ s will be available for a small charge.

ROLLING THUNDER Racing E mag will feature articles and photos from all events at Rolling Thunder Raceway.

RTRP are interested in obtaining feedback from competitors and spectators on all aspects of the Rolling Thunder Raceway venue. To this end, questionnaires will be available on the RTR web site in the near future. It should be noted that the venue upgrade will take time and hopefully in-cremental improvements will be noticeable on each visit to the venue. The events calendar for 2011/12 season is currently being developed along with a number of events throughout the remainder of the 2010/11 season. At this stage, RTRP is looking to develop the following events/series next season, more details regarding all events will be released shortly.360 Sprintcar Thunder Series. Most likely to include 6rounds at RTR during the 2011/12 season. The specifications will be based on the ASCS sprintcar specifications in the USA, which includes the 1475lb weight rule. Accepted engines to include SCCA 360 engines and VSC Sprintcar engines.

Media Release - 13 February 2011 by The Pirate

Chris Smokin’ Solomon snares Sprintcar Feature.

On a track that was black and slick and which required, speed, skill and finesse to be fast, Gisborne racer Chris Solomon smoked a huge talent laden field of Sprintcars with some audacious outside passes in no mans land to score his maiden Sprintcar Feature in the inaugural Ty-son “Spud” Perez Memorial at Redline Raceway, Bal-larat, Australia, last night (Sat 12th Febru-ary).“It has been a while coming, but to get my first feature win in Spud’s (Tyson Perez) memorial race and to receive the trophy from his mum Deb, just makes it all the more special.” Said Solomon in victory lane. “I would like to thank Deb (Tucker – nee Perez) and Tuck (Peter Tucker) for the effort they’ve put into this event just to be here and to Wayne Smith and everyone else for making this all hap-pen.”

“To be honest with you that was the easiest

race I have ever had (in terms of driving the car), the car was perfect and I just rode around. There was nothing on the car set-up wise that I would change if I had to run that race again.” Solomon explained

While Solomon, who is a man who is not overly effusive with words, made it sound simple, that was far from the case however, as all night long he seemed to have the measure of his opponents as a large dirt windrow that marked the infield virtually eliminated inside passes.

Solomon though was un-troubled as he was ex-tremely comfortable pass-ing cars the long way around something that he did during his heat races and then again to take the feature race-lead before running off to hide.“I want to thank my dad Ray, my brother Paul, Gabe,

Doug, Bill Roberts and eve-ryone who has helped me along the way to finally get me into victory lane.” He continued.

Getting to ”victory lane” however, nearly became an issue when the young speed-ster was given the glory of a victory lap with the che-quered flag. Instead of a slow lap to bask in the fame, Solomon performed a high speed lap followed by some donuts but when he spun down onto the windrow that had been his ally earlier, it almost caught him out (See photo next page).

A win and a second place in his two heats earned Solo-mon the pole for the feature as most of his competitors were quick from the front of

the grid but struggled to pass cars from the back.

On the first attempt to start the feature, fellow front row starter Brad Fos-ter beat him down into turn one but when it was called back after a turn one pile up he could not repeat the effort and Solo-mon won a close fought start. Again the race was restarted after Tony Moule flipped and Foster was again aggressive into turn one and led the first few laps as Solomon set-tled down and plotted his challenge before taking the lead with a daring out-side pass through turns one and two. From there on he pulled away and was never headed or even threatened despite a late race stoppage.

“Like Chris (Solomon), we are also looking for our first feature win, but tonight he deserved it. He drove around the outside of me and drove away. Congratulations to him he really deserved the win.” Said a magnanimous Foster.Chris Solomon would like to acknowledge the generous support of his sponsors;FMG – Formula Motorsports GroupCPS Liquid Waste, ADA Powder CoatingsCommercial AutomaticsGrizzly Dyno ShocksDirtAddict.comPirate Media.

Rolling Thunder Raceway (Bacchus Marsh, Vic-toria) made a return to the Victorian speedway scene on Sunday April 17th with a new promo-tional body and a new enthusiasm and a new attitude towards competitors and spectators.

The new association known as Rolling Thunder Raceway Promotions Inc (RTRP) took their first cautious step at promoting speedway at the often maligned circuit which has at times deliv-ered brilliant racing and also struggled under extreme environmental conditions.

“The philosophy behind the new association is to make racing as cheap as possible for com-petitors by recognising all forms of licences, insurance and associations,” said RTRP asso-ciation secretary Ray Solomon. “We believe we have assembled a team of motivated people with experience in all facets of running speed-ways and race meetings and that this will hold us in good stead for now and the future.”

Many improvement works and changes have been undertaken, with many more planned for the venue including public entry to the pits for spectators and a seated café style eating area within the pits in addition to improved public seating.

Behind the scenes, association members Rob Harris, Chris Overall, Ray Solomon, Roger Leask and others had been working hard to as-

semble a solid field of cars and classes at relatively short notice. Further assistance was given by Michael Reidy from AMCA Nationals and Brad McClure, the current Australian Street Stock Champion who’d been busy working the phone and the social networks gathering a field of eager “streeties”.

And so it was that on a beautiful Autumn Sunday that Rolling Thunder Raceway presented a mixed bag of sedans and open wheelers that marked a resounding re-turn of racing to the BIG Bacchus Marsh speed-bowl where records were set before a vocal and appreciative crowd.

Street Stocks.McClure is a racers racer who loves the big fast track and was keen to stretch the legs of the Richard Spies owned Australia 1 Commodore. However, Mick Clark was the runner up to McClure at the recently held Aussie Champion-ship in Mildura and on top of that had already scored a pair of feature wins at the big track in AMCA Nationals competition so clearly he too was at home on the wide open venue.

By a great quirk of fate, the two “hot rodders’ found themselves paired up in their heats meaning that neither would have an easy run to the final.Clark was able to put his recent chassis refine-ments to the big test in the first heat and won fairly comfortably from McClure after leading every lap.Behind them the battle was more intense as Anthony Wilson pushed his Commodore from last to third with Rick Ashmore, Stuart Robin-son, Bradley Ahearn, James Robinson and Aaron White next.

Heat two saw Jamie Lock in his pristine Falcon lead early until Brendan Hannabury in his bat-tle weary Falcon took the lead on lap four and

held on for the win from Lock, Jason Braddock, John Roycroft (in the ex Gartner SA25 Falcon), Des Robinson, Darren Matthews and Paul Threfall.

Due to a mix up in the pits, a small field of cars came out for heat three which saw Wilson win from the front ahead of Braddock and Des, Stuart and James Robinson.

The final fuller heat, saw McClure exact revenge on Clark by reversing the positions from heat one but there was a problem for McClure as the Commodore had cracked the exhaust, again, and had lost some torque. Roycroft held third throughout with Lock, Hannabury, White, Ashmore and Matthews completing the runners. This heat also saw an unfortunate accident that claimed Threfall and Ahearn.Threfall got the car lose in turn four on lap one and over-corrected and went hard into the wall at a 45degree angle before bouncing back out and being hit by Ahearn. Both cars were unable to restart and sadly Threfall was unable to race on with a suspected broken shoulder or col-larbone. RTRP extends its best wishes to Threfall and hopes he has a full and speedy recovery.

The feature event saw a dozen cars contest a 15 lap final where Clark led from go to whoa with an ailing McClure holding on grimly to 2nd

place. Behind them Lock and Hannabury continued their battle with Roycroft, White and Des Robinson completing the event.

By virtue of his win Clark became the fist man in the history of this track to win features in two different classes.

AMCA Nationals. The AMCA Nationals were once a regular class at this venue and so it was a good to have them back at short notice.

Grant Cullinger has taken over the newer of the family’s two AMCA’s after his father Alan made an as-sisted retire-ment from the sport after nu-merous decades of competition, and Grant has found some good speed from his new mount. So much so that he blasted to the win in heat one after passing early leader Trevor Thierry. Shea Bradley, who has been at nearly every event here either as a driver or a helper, shook off the effects of her last start roll-over and scorched to runner up ahead of Stan Marco Jnr, Ricky Clark, Paul Forrest, Matt Bourke, Brendan Jarvis, Paul Sullivan and Paul Cusack.

In the reverse grid heat Sullivan made the most of his better starting spot to score the win from Clark, Marco, Bradley, Bourke, Cullinger, Cusack, Thierry and Corey Spokes in the original AMCA (ex Cullinger).

For reasons unknown to RTRP, some AMCA competitors had trailered their cars before the feature event leaving a depleted field, but none the

Page 12: Issue 14 Rolling Thunder E Magazine

www.rollingthunderraceway.com.au

less there was some quality units amongst them.Marco led the field across the line at the end of lap one but an error saw him drop back to 5th by the end of lap two which was led by Clark from Bradley, Cullinger and Bourke.Cullinger moved up to second just before mid race distance and held on to cross the line behind Clark who’d scored his second RTR AMCA feature win. Bradley was a satisfying third ahead of Bourke and Marco.

Formula V8’s.The big V8 sedans of the Formula V8’s ventured away from their home base of Redline raceway with a small but enthusiastic field of cars and quickly adapted to the much bigger and wider venue.

Veteran Don Chettleburgh was quickly into his stride taking an all the way win in the first heat, but he was under huge pressure from Russ Matthews who poked and prodded but just couldn’t find a way past. Kieran Brennan, Steve Forte and newcomer Gareth Williams completed the field.

Chettleburgh again led form start to fin-ish in heat two but behind him ensued a great three way battle between Mat-thews, Brennan and Forte. Forte eventu-ally grabbed second despite having spun on lap four. Mat-thews was next

Page 13: Issue 14 Rolling Thunder E Magazine

ROLLING THUNDER Racing E News/Magazine 13

www.rollingthunderraceway.com.au

ahead of Williams after Brennan dropped out on the penultimate lap while holding second.

Form dictated that Chettleburgh would run away with the final but Forte had other ideas and the pair entered turn one aggressively side by side with contact between the two eliminating Chettleburgh. Forte survived without significant damage and then engaged in a three way nose to tail battle with Matthews and Brennan for the remainder of the race with Mathews and Brennan swapping positions nearly every lap as they each took shots at the lead, often to their own detriment. A last lap lunge for the lead eventually cost Brennan his second place with Matthews follow-ing Forte across the line with Williams back in fourth.

Standard Saloons.Of the 16 nominated entries, unfortunately only six cars, including a late entry, fronted for their share of the action.Still, the racing was pretty good.Michael Hume in his V8 Falcon was leading the opening heat when his car started smoking badly. Fearing a major engine problem Hume pulled out but it appeared that it was the oil pressure sender unit that had

failed, something which could be rectified,Ben Farquar in his colourful jelly bean addiction Commodore took over the lead and the win ahead of John Watson, Leigh Gooding, Wayne Nel-son and Rachael Robinson.

Gooding led all the way in heat two from Robinson as Hume took a cau-tious approach to grab third.

In the main event Hume was back on the gas and after disposing of Gooding, led the remainder of the journey to take the win from Gooding, Watson and Robinson.

VSC Open Sedans The VSC Open Sedans were in a similar situation to the Standard Sa-loons with a small field. However, the day was a tightly contested affair between Wayne Nelson and Ash Schoonbeck who were generally stuck nose to tail. After an extremely wet track saw a delay to their first heat, Wayne Nel-son finally took the win from Schoonbeck with Sonia Nelson leading Rod Brown who had taken over Darren Stills’ car. Both Darren Nelson and Sam Williams suffered mechanical dramas.

Heat two was a cracker with Schoonbeck executing a last corner pass to snatch the win from Wayne Nelson with Williams, Sonia Nelson and Brown next.

Wayne Nelson wouldn’t be caught out again in the feature and despite constant pressure from Schoonbeck was able to take the win with Sonia Nelson third ahead of Williams and Brown.

ASCF JuniorsThe skid kids arrived in reasonable numbers and despite some of them being a bit daunted by the size and speed of the venue, they never let that hold them back.

Brody Norton led the opening heat away until the more experienced Nick Cockerill took over the lead with Lachlan Reeves soon moving up to second place. Norton held onto third from Mick Skene, Shane Younger, Donald Young, recently crowned Victorian Standard Saloon Junior Champion Matt Nelson and rookie Morgan Swandall. Kye Walters was the only retirement.

The top three result in heat two was the same however, this time Reeves led the majority of the race before Cockerill took the lead three laps from home. Younger also got the better of

Skene with Nelson (struggling with a spin or two) and Swandall next.

The kids were given a good run in the fi-nal and again Reeves led the first half be-fore the much more experienced Cockerill made his move to the front, Norton was again a podium finisher with Younger, Skene, Nelson (again having difficulty in the recently purchased car) and Swandall completing the finishers.

Wingless Sprintcars and Late Model Sedans. To further excite and interest the crowd a number of Sprintcars (VSC, 360 & Open) re-moved their wings for some spirited demon-stration laps.

Brett Milburn brought his ex Donny Schatz J&J with its potent 410 cubic inch power plant. Chris Solomon had his 360 cubic inch car sans wing and so too did Colin Barker and local racer Ken Hutchins with his 337 VSC “carbied’ engine. Wayne Milburn was a late arrival with his 378 open engine.Paul Solomon brought his car complete with wings as a chance to do some on track testing.

Of the bunch, Brett Milburn was, as expected the quickest. Sadly he was also the quickest to turn his once valuable car into a steaming mess of mangled metal. Milburn thankfully was

Page 15: Issue 14 Rolling Thunder E Magazine

ROLLING THUNDER Racing E News/Magazine 15

www.rollingthunderraceway.com.au

only dazed but otherwise okay. His car? Well…Milburn was carrying a lot of speed down the straights and was clearly enjoying being able to back the car in, something which is lost when the wing goes on. Unfortunately Milburn backed the car into turn one just a little too hard and had the machine totally sideways. The big right rear gripped and the momentum did the rest launching the car into a series of bone jarring flips and somersaults before coming to rest the right way up near the wall. (see front cover)See video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_BV4ce4k2E

Hutchins had saved money by basing his car at the track but a blown engine proved costly. The rest of the demonstrators safely enjoyed their afternoon playing without wings.

Late Model Sedans are bigger in their homeland USA than Sprintcars, with bigger competitor numbers and more prize money on offer more often. In recent years the push for Late Models has swelled across the West Australian border towards the eastern states and a long time supporter has been Gippsland’s’ Bill Mentiplay who brought out a couple of his Late Model Sedans for a demonstration.Super Sedan and Late Model racer and son in law Gary Bryans looked superb on the big track in the big #33 sedan and had many people im-

pressed and wanting more.Mentiplay’s step son Shaun Nelson was in Bill’s own #95 for a couple of runs before Mentiplay took over for a final blast.Following on from the brilliant round of the Trans Tasman Sedan Challenge back in October, and this demonstration, a regular helping of Late Models at RTR would definitely be a popular crowd pleaser.

All in all, despite some minor issues that can be easily addressed, the meeting was without doubt a success, and the RTRP crew are keen for more.

Before a Friday night long weekend crowd, three Aussie Late Model racers – Warren Oldfield, Geoff Phillips and Darryl Grimson –thrilled the fans with an awesome display of racing that saw the top trio swapping the lead backwards and forwards with some audacious passing and inspired racing. In the end though it was West Aussie Oldfield who took his third straight feature win from Phillips and Mi-chael Holmes but not before he had been forced to work especially hard for the win. Importantly from an Aussie standpoint the lock out of the top four positions helped reel in some Championship points on run-away leaders New Zealand with just two rounds remaining. For Oldfield it was very much like being back at home on the big Perth track but surprisingly the big outside passes were absent which helped set up some great racing

when lapped cars came into play.“That was some great racing, hard work, and a lot of fun.” Stated Old-field who is be-

coming accustomed to repelling all challenges. “Once again I have to thank my crew who’ve been work-ing really hard. I thought on that last restart that I might have been in trouble (lose the lead) but we held on so I’m really happy.”For Phillips, who finally made it south and joined the series after all sorts of issues beyond his control prevented him from making the first three rounds, it was a nice reward after all the dramas.“I had all sorts of things occur which stopped us from making it down last weekend which I won’t go into but it’s great to finally be here and be part of the series and to run so well.” Explained Phillips. “I really have to thank my dad and everyone else who worked so hard to get us here this weekend. I hope this is a just reward for their ef-forts.”Mr. Consistency, Holmes, contin-ued his run of unbroken podium finishes as he chased down those ahead after qualifying back in 12th

place. The first of the New Zealanders home was Shane Mcintyre who fin-ished fifth behind Grimson. McIn-

tyre was the class of the Kiwi’s who all struggled a little on the big track. If not for a coming together with just three laps to go between Gary Bryans, Blair Granger and Grim-son, the Aussies would have taken the top six positions and really made a significant impact on the Kiwi points lead.Oldfield got the ball rolling winning the opening heat and the final heat while Ross Nicastri also took a pair of wins. Queenlanders Granger

and Phillips scored the other heat wins.

Nicastri in particular looked right at home and set scorching times on the way to his wins being the only driver in the sub 16 second bracket. Sadly wisps of smoke in his second heat spelt the end of his night with more engine dramas.Round 5 of the 6 race series is scheduled for tonight (Saturday

Trans Tasman Triple Treat for Oldfield as Aussies lock Kiwis out of top spots.

The Fire Service Plus –BSA Sprintcar All Star Series congratulates the Caruso Team for winning the Series. “With a team like Caruso’s I knew they would lift the bar from

last season’s 7th place in the Series and they cer-tainly did. Mark drove to win the series by making sure he finished and placed well at every round. Crew Chief Byron (Scorpion) Phillips made sure the car was reliable, Maxwell Engines made sure the car was fast, Uncle made sure the truck got to the track, and Leo did what Dads do – help pay the bills and give moral support!” Mandy Searle says.

As well as collecting the winner’s purse of $2300 Caruso collected a Q T Chassis & body panel kit. Putting the winner’s prize at $6500.“Alan Woods from QT Chassis has been fan-tastic to us this past season – I cannot thank him enough for offering us this prize. He rings after every race meeting to see how things went which proves that he is really interested in what the Series is doing. Sponsors like this are such a bonus to the Series; I only hope we can promote them well enough.” Mandy tells us.
