After a long and tiring month of exams followed by vocational training and holidays, which most of us must have enjoyed and some are still enjoying, here we are with the 15th Issue. This Issue, being the first monthly issue of The Educrats, has some unanticipated add-ons in order to enhance your reading experience.

In the first section, Pen Route, we have a new set of writers with different ideas. Beginning of the rainy season is a solace after the scorching summer heat. So it is for Shrishti Monga who welcomes the monsoon in her poem. Also, we have a mesmerizing poem titled 'The Solitary Weaver', by Ashish

Kumar, in which he takes us to world old weaver, who weaves his way 'as though it was a destiny in his life'. Next is a poem by Shikha Shah titled 'Indecent'. Find out what she wants to say.

In Issue 14, it was said that Aniruddh Agarwal, our ex-editor, won't be writing for us (in Culture Vulture). Ironically, he was furious with this, and is back with an 'Open Letter to the College Administration' in the 'Opinions' section. Further in this section, we also have an article based on the TV show 'Satyamev Jayate', titled 'Truth and Beyond', by Seema Chawla. Apart from this we have the 'Kha Mat' section

with a new version of Tapra Chronicles and Editor's Pick to add some spices to your reading experience. So, be ready with your cup of tea, you are really going to enjoy this issue. Happy reading!!!

INDECENT

WELCOME THE MONSOON

- Shikha Shah

What the hell am I doing? Running badly without knowing the end

My mind aghast with rage Exasperated at being caught in the 'Social

cage’

The more I try to concentrate, the more my thought drifts...

Is it really a "What" or rather a "Why" Why the hell am i still on?

When all I care about is the ,"Breaking Dawn”

Its like a cobweb, with me in the middle The more i twist, the more i get tangled! All i am left with is ,a melancholy soul

As if sucked all of its quintessence

It seems like a thing of 'The great past' When I chose something that wasn't my

class Now i am caught in an impasse

With no option but to be dragged!

Still, my naive heart desires Something bizarre thats beyond my

powers.... To shear every shackle that bounds

The teenage dream for which this heart still pounds....

May be its already too late And I have lost all the chances of turning

back Yet I have decided to acknowledge 'a haute-

voix' That rings in my ears all the time......

----------------------------------------------------

- Shristi Monga

I have seen people danceThe very second you arrive..

Are you a blessing or a boon?Or just another season drive..

Some may see you as evil,Or some may hug you as their pal

Kids may wonder how awesome you areLike a miracle dwindling from heaven or

hell..

When mom asks me not to forget the umbrella,I can feel her warmth within you

With your twirling lightening and singing thunder

You make me recall what my brother does..

The fact that you tumble even as snowLooks as if you were a powerful Min

You may turn out to be a mighty strokeBut you purify the world from within..

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I see a gaunt little man, weaving everyday of his life,

he sits aloof in a corner of a midget hut, singing a song, I barely recognize.

He weaves his way through ,as if it was his destiny in life,

his most prized possessions are,a needle and a bed on which he lies

.He wears a white turban, and has a wrinkled face,

which can catch any artists eyes,to me they depict the struggles of his life.

He does not do it for fun or pleasure,I can see it in his eyes,

with his earnest sincerity,he weaves everyday of his life,

Undeterred by the rain and the winds that blow,he sits in the very same corner,

like a king of a palace,his will,

conjuring an army for what nature beholds.

He is deaf to the voices, and blind to the crowd that passing by,

his only daughter would call “ baba come have your food for once,

you don't have to weave all the time “,his only reassurance “ wait a little while more

my child “.

SOLITARY WEAVER-Ashish Kumar

It didn't earn him a fortune, not even enough to sustain his life, pity was the feeling which came,

as I looked through the bars of window, weaving everyday of his life.

I opened my window one day, through the bars I didn't see,

the old familiar face, which was everyday in front of me.

Nothing had moved him till now, neither the rain or the winds,

nor the scorching heat of summerswhich the nature had to give.

Curiosity took over, and I began to walk,to ask for the person,

I haven't talked once in my life.

I knocked on the rusty old door, which shockingly I never took notice of,

in the presence of the solitary weaver, the necessity wasn't called for.

Someone came there to answer, but I found myself out of words,

for my only question which filled my mind up,

gathering my senses I raised my finger, pointing towards the corner ,

amid the bed and the stock of jute that lie.

Before I could pour out some words in her sight,

her eyes were wet and tears were the answer,to the question running in my mind.

I walked right back, not saying a word, the window was still open,it now felt that all this time, the bars were of my gaol,

and that he was free,a master of his own free will,

weaving his way free.

For the first time, words of pity were not which I could relate to

him, inspiration, passion, freedom were what I

could associate with him,he was just a solitary weaver,

weaving his way free, will I ever be that bird,to fly such as he……

OPEN LETTER TO THE ADMINISTRATION

Respected College Administration,

I address you through this open letter as an Alumnus of your college. I write this as an attempt to make you see what you have pretended not to. I write this to tell you of a thousand tales that have gone unheard, to tell you of hundred muted voices, silenced not by your cruelty but by your indifference, to tell you of the hopelessness that resides in your hostel rooms and the quiet ember that flickers in every heart biding its time. I write this to tell you that your college is rotting. Day by day, minute by minute, the rot gets worse. You wonder how, you wonder why? Let me begin at the start.

We wondered how beautiful engineering will be if rotational mechanics could be so good. We wondered how truly wonderful will college be if we could truly express ourselves the way we wanted to. We wondered about getting to learn how engines worked and to see them first hand. We wondered about a million things when we roamed around the campus the first day when we came for admissions. And then reality hit us. I think you're proud to have given us life lessons. That was the first, Sir, and the harshest but the most vital; that reality is always cruel, that life's promises are more often than not, hollow. We knew that we had come to a place which would drudge uniformity in us. The first thing that we lost was not our ability to sit through lectures or discipline but our sense of ourselves, our individuality. You made sure that the student be treated as not an individual, that he should 'behave' himself and not be 'against the system' when all that we wanted was to ask WHY? You barraged us with teachers who couldn't make learning fun, you made sure that the teacher made clear what we were here to do on the very first day which was 'to pass all exams and get a job'. He made clear that 'dancing, singing, khelna-koodna' will have its own time and place. You told us that college was just school with one difference. It provided us with jobs at the end of it. You made sure that we knew that we were not adults yet.

We were kids in your eyes, with hormonal problems. If a guy talked to a girl in the corridor, the teacher would make a judgement on their characters and if the guy was seen to have touched the girl, then he must be treated like a molester. You with your prejudiced mind saw every guy looking for the slightest opportunity or provocation to misbehave with a girl. And this perspective of yours extended to one and all. Not even girls were spared. You earmarked girls who were seen to be 'friendly' with guys and made sure that the teachers harassed them with personal questions during their vivas. And in one instance the teacher even managed to flout all rules of decency by asking the girl during her viva for her mobile phone so he could go through all her messages. That is how deep the rot is. You don't respect women, you don't respect us but you Sir, want utmost respect from us.

You have created a wonderful mirage around yourselves, looking through which you laud yourselves. You think that you're still delivering success stories. Let me tell you the worst kept secret ever in the college, you play NO PART in a single student's success. Ask the guy who gets a top rank in the GATE exam and you will hear him thanking his coaching teacher not you. Ask the guy who won the

inter college competition and you will only listen to him lamenting about how little support he got from you. You kill our passions andour talents to 'hone' us into robotic engineers who only know how to pass CSVTU exams. You see it all I am sure but then not see it at all. You take adults into your college, people who could definitely find their own self confidence again having tried for JEE and failed, and in some cases multiple times. You have the opportunity every year to give the student a fresh start, to tell him that all is not lost, to give him hope again but all you give him is scorn, indifference and monotony. You don't cure him; you make the disease more acute. You intensify the disease, the disease that plagues every single student, the fear to aspire. Aspire to excel, you exhort. It is ironical and tragic that you kill every student's aspiration first. YOU tell him what HE should aspire for. He should aspire for a job or a GATE rank. He should aspire to be a 9 pointer. He should aspire to be an unquestioning robot, to be what you want him to be. You even have the audacity to tell us to excel but not in everything that we do but only in Academics.

Sir, I wish I could really make you feel what each student of yours feels. Only then will you get out of the comfort of your AC rooms in the admin block and do something. I wish I could fill your heart with the same frustration that my fellow batch-mates feel right now sitting in their tiny rooms somewhere in Delhi, Bangalore or Mumbai without a job and an uncertain tomorrow. I wish I could give you the anger of the student who treads the same path every day to college just to get some extra sessionals but doesn't get any at the end. I wish I could give you understanding. I wish I could give you an ear that will hear the shriek inside the student's mind when he's lying in his hostel room sickened by the life he's living, which he drowns every night in royal stag. I wish I could give you empathy. I wish most of all Sir, that I could make you realise what you've lost, what you've so easily forgotten, the beauty of your profession, the opportunity you seem to squander every day of inspiring somebody, the very essence of being a teacher. I wish I could hold up a mirror to your heart and make you look in it. Only then will you see the cracks in your system, the cracks that harbour the rot, the stench of it so widespread and pervasive that you have stopped noticing it at all. Only then sir, will you see that how utterly despicable your existence is, and how flimsy is your mirage. But for now, you can sit in your Air Conditioned room counting away your MQ cash and think that all is well. As the students file in every morning like soda cans in a conveyor belt; unquestioning, unflinching and mute with something gurgling inside; a fear to aspire, a fear to be themselves and a fear to be aware that they are not soda cans, all identical, but distinct with dreams stashed away somewhere in their hearts and forgotten. That fear is your victory Sir. Rejoice.

TRUTH AND BEYOND

While reading the trilogy by Jean Sasson – Princess of Arabia, Daughters of Arabia and Desert Royal, I only kept thanking God that I was born in a country where the lives of women have molded from the weak and timid woman to a strong and successful one. The image of an independent, modern Indian woman brings a smile to our face. We feel proud to be a part of the community which has changed their mindsets and brought a difference to society.

But my prayers and wishes were proved wrong till I saw Satyamev Jayate, a show which pricked and brought tears trickling down my eyes. The subject of female infanticide, dowry and male domination has never been extinct in our country. But on a realistic note, the facts shown were shocking and left one numb.

Reading these books or any of Jean Sassoon's novels, I always felt that the Middle East is the prime place on earth where women have never been able to get the respect they deserve. But I was so wrong when I saw the multiple horrifying acts where Indian families torture their daughter-in-laws to death for carrying a girl child in their womb. To add to this, there were highly educated doctors, professors, teachers, businessmen part of this cruel act. The sufferance of the middle class woman, withstanding the harsh, ruthless and cold behaviour of the man of the house for a decade strikes another strong note of awakening. Indians keep talking of the huge 'developing' race they are a part of. This show is here to give some reality check.

As the weeks have passed by, the stories brought out have been gruesome yet touching, sympathetic yet inspiring. Ranging from the issues related to dowry to a problem as sensitive as child abuse and domestic violence, venturing into controversies taking place in the health services and the injustice done to people with disabilities, all have been handled with great maturity, understanding and bountiful of emotion.

Out of the people who viewed the show, most of them were appreciative of the idea. But there were some who said 'Aamir and his marketing gimmick!' Yes, he publicizes his work well and like everyone he too is working hard to earn his living. But for once, let us look at the idea and the intention behind such a noble act-- an act of coming out with the truth and actually taking a step for the better of mankind. The amount of research which has gone into the project is evident and the back end work, which is usually not evident in most reality shows, is very much seen here. According to the TRPs, here is a show which is not known and watched because of the star but for the content portrayed in it.

We must have seen umpteen programs which have tried to make some difference to the problems faced by the common man. But the impact must have been missing. Aamir brings that exact impact and the connection which is needed with people in his show. His commitment and sincerity towards the cause is comparable to Oprah Winfrey but bringing Indian social problems in such a magnified way is a daring thing to do. I don't know about the rest but I speak for the many or maybe thousands of people who are going to be benefited with this step towards truth and justice.

Satyamev Jayate. Jai Hind!

INCREDIBLE INDIA

Last week my cable operator 'murdered' NDTV 24/7 and NDTV India channels in our locality; and no one can question my brand loyalty to NDTV channels when it comes to breakfast news. Helpless, I switched over to ABP news, the new 'avatar' of Star News, which came up with an add campaign of: 'Naam badla hai par khabrein nahi'. Quite true; especially when one encounters Srivardhan Trivedi and his clichéd oxymoron: 'Chain se sona hai to jag jaye', from his very famous as well as infamous show, 'Sansani'—nothing has changed. It was then that I discovered that Indian news channels, apart from one or two, are more of 'soap-opera style news channels–with some unsuccessful actors

emulating a murder story (oblivious to their cheap acting skills), 'Natya Rupantaran' written in red below the ABP news logo and a news anchor (whom the previous channel left as a bequest for the new avatar) belaboring over the 'sansanikhez' incident—rather than the conventional 'real news'. Irritated, I went to Youtube in search of the 'real news'. And today, when I started contemplating recent events for this write up, the 'clichéd oxymoron'—which I so distastefully turned down—appeared coherent in the context. After all it is an 'Incredible India' my friend.

I really want to repeat that oxymoron for the people of UP now, but I will avoid belaboring like that news anchor. Well, the state was already suffering from the callous governance of Mayavati Government and SP has taken over Lucknow only to make matters worse. Major cities like Ghaziabad are suffering from shortage of electricity and water. Farmers are complaining that their farms are dry due to power cuts; poor Government participation in agriculture paired with late monsoons are expected to be a severe blow to an already blighted economy. And under these circumstances the Chief Minister wearing a saffron color (a symbol of 'strength' in the Indian flag)

'Gandhi Topi' didn't give a second thought before packing a gift of 403 cars, each worth 20 lakh bucks for his MPs—much against the Gandhian philosophy. Perhaps, he used the saffron color to pinpoint this difference—the 'Gundaraaj' is on its way, and Mr Chief Minister can do what he feels like.

But the UPA government is my favorite. After their embattled ally, A Raja, is out of his 'home-sweet-home', Tihar, they must be missing him at Delhi. But, their guest, who received a warm welcome in Tamil Nadu from DMK and his Dalit supporters at Nilgiri Hills, is indifferent. After suffering a defeat from Jailalita, why is DMK still valorizing their tainted Dalit leader who brought a bad name to the party?—is still a question. And even our celebrated UPA Government shows no sign of rationality when it comes to the presidential elections. You can see all sorts of 'realpolitik' games being played on these issues—and UPA are the champions of the game—but when it comes to reforms, there just naïve. Pranab Mujherjee says that he has received more from the party than he has given to the party. Well, not only the party but also its allies, I must say. The NCP didn't hesitate to kick one of their founder members out when he was found accused of running for the highest office against Pranab da.

But I believe the climax is yet to come, with a more obvious question on the way: Who will be the next president? Meanwhile, I hope our soft-spoken PM—the pioneer of free market economy—is successful in his attempt to 'reverse the climate of pessimism' and 'revive the animal spirits in the country's economy', provided the 'spirits' are 'animal' for all good reasons only. But, in Incredible India, you never know.

The Indian Tennis fraternity Vs Leander Paes led to an interesting set of events this month. The veteran was deserted by Bhupati as well as Bopanna when both of them expressed their unwillingness to pair with Paes. The 'Indian Express' duo at odds, AITA had to do something, but what it did was slammed violently by Sania Mirza who said that she was offered 'in compensation to partner one of the feuding champions purely in order to lure him into accepting to play with a men's player he does not wish to play with', and no one would disagree with that. Incredible India!

Moving ahead, this month was a 'movie-less-month' for me. The month long excitement of the Euro Cup overpowered any will to go out for a movie. I was a die-hard supporter of Spain since the last world cup (I always support the winners) and they didn't let me down in Euro '12. Though I wanted it to be Germany Vs Spain in the finals, I expected Italy Vs Spain to be a tactical war rather than a cakewalk as turned out. But the way Spaniards ended it was amazing and a celebration could not be avoided. And a celebration calls for a movie and that would be tomorrow, 6 to 9, and the movie would be 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. From the reviews I got, I hope 'Manoj Vajpayee meri keh k na le le'; as, in Incredible India, you never know.

This was my first book of Sunil Gangopadhyay, albeit a translation!“The Fakir”, translated by Monabi Mitra is a classic utopian work. It is a simple tale with an important social message…In a world where material things define boundaries between human beings, Lalan Fakir gives a message that is evocative and calls for self–introspection to the reader. It is a well-woven narrative of lalan (originally lalu); who is good in singing, is a Hindu man living with his mother. Now, lalan becomes ill, & somehow reaches to a Muslim woman's home. There is some memory loss of him due to the illness, so he stays on with the woman, who adopts him as a son. On finding out that his son spent time in a Muslim community, his Hindu mother reacts in a way that shocks lalan. Soon he reconciles this fact and his life takes a new turn. Read “The Fakir” to find out the new turn & for a good perspective on the message of peace between warring religions; to find a community that is free of social conventions and also, for some good poems.

Swarathma is a Bangalore based contemporary folk-fusion band that represents the sound of today's India: rooted in tradition, yet with sights set firmly on the world. The sound is Indian folk and Classical blended with Reggae, Blues and Jazz. The band is known for a visually electric stage act featuring faux-folk-horses, Bihari accents, and Nehru Topis at various times. With music that is strong and beautiful, contemporary and relevant, hard-hitting and tongue-in- cheek, they're one of India's most sought after live acts. They swept the Jack Daniels Indian Rock Awards 2009 winning Band of the Year and Album of the Year (Swarathma). The band wears their social conscience on their sleeve. They play one free show for every paid show, giving back their music to those who may not be able to watch them easily. They've played for leprosy centres, villages, orphanages and street kids at various times. City of God is a Brazilian crime drama adapted from the novel of the same name written by Paulo Lins. The plot is based upon real events and the characters aren't fictitious. It depicts the growth of organized crime in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro, between late '60s and early '80 and two different paths travelled by two kids born and brought up in same suburb. The movie personifies the proverb "If you run, the beast catches; if you stay, the beast eats".In 60's “Tender Trio” robs motels and gas trucks. Younger kid (Li'l Dice) watches and learns well...too well actually and goes on killing spree. The timeline jumps forward into the 70's, Li'l Zé (Li'l Dice rechristened as Li'l Zé) has prospered very well. He owns the city and along with his childhood friend Bené has established a drug empire by wiping out rival gangs without mercy except for one dealer named Carrot, who is a friend of Bené. His childhood friend Bené is the only one to keep him on the good side of sanity. Meanwhile Rocket has watched these two gain power for years, and he wants no part of it. All he wants to do is take pictures. All hell breaks loose when Bené is shot dead. War engulfs the city which marks the beginning of 80's. Things are out of control between the last two remaining gangs as both sides enlist more and more “soldiers” to fight the WAR. Will it end??
