A development application has been approved by Cabonne Council, subject to conditions, for the construction of three detached villas in Preston Street, South Canowindra. As part of Habitat for Humanity NSW projects for low cost affordable housing, this development has caused quite a stir locally. There has been some speculation that the structures would be similar to wartime "Nissen" huts, however a spokes-man for Habitat for Humanity has denied this completely. It was suggested that people who wish to view completed Habitat projects should visit the three Habitat homes in Eungella Place Orange. In the report submitted to the Cabonne Council Environmental Services and Sustainability Committee Meeting held on Monday 4 April 2011 there were a number of local concerns regarding the development application, including: Concerns over the size and number of proposed villas; loss of privacy for the next door neighbour, and no provision of fencing along boundaries; the proposed construction materials and colour scheme; the proposed architecture could be “eye sores” or unsightly and out of place; poor maintenance of the rear lane access by overuse and vehicles associated with the site; drainage issues associated with the site and street in general; and visibility of water rainwater tanks from the street. These issues were addressed by the committee as follows: based on the occupancy rate of 3.3 people per three bedroom dwelling, the proposal's three villas on a site area of 2,060m² equates to 9.9 persons, which is significantly less than the 16 people permissible under the Policy’s guidelines. The proposal does not exceed 50% of the area, as the total site coverage equates to approximately 30% which includes the three villas in addition to the driveway and parking area.

To the editor... So often we only hear of unkind acts and deeds in news stories and I would like to report a special kindness shown me in my time of need. On 28th February I was involved in a car accident in Orange and our new Suzuki had to await major parts from Japan which were delayed by the sad and tragic events caused by the tsunami. I live in Orange during the week and come ‘home’ to Canowindra on the week-ends. In the quick second it takes to have a car accident the incredible stress of no car to transport my daughter, our German exchange student and myself, was placed upon me and the cost of hiring a vehicle for 8 weeks loomed as an expensive reality. A very kind gesture was made by Sue and Michael Whiteley to loan us their car while they were on holidays. Thank you to the Whiteley Family. Judith Selby, Canowindra

From Saturday 14 May, we will be closing each night at 6pm until Spring.

Significant landscaping will address the issues of privacy and visual impact from the streetscape and will include ‘canopy trees’ along the western boundary and adjacent to the driveway. To further address neighbour concerns, boundary fencing to a height of 1.8m would be required on the western boundary as a condition of consent. The land is located within an established residential area and the proposal is considered to be compatible with the surrounding land uses within the locality. The proposed design is contemporary in nature however, is not considered to have a detrimental impact upon the surrounding locality. The colour schemes for each house is to be different from each other so as to reinforce their unique identity and to complement the street-scape, with roofs not to be reflective. Access is currently gained via an existing driveway located off Preston Street, the proposal does not include the provision of any new access points to the site. An upgrade of the existing access point for safe and practical access is provided to the proposed development. Already partnered with a couple of local families, Habitat is looking forward to working with the community to ensure the acceptance and embracing of the project. Families moving in to the homes have to be willing and able to contribute 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ in building their home, including basic skills and financial training; as well as other essential criteria. If you would like to get involved with Habitat for Humanity NSW there are lots of opportunities available through both gift-in-kind and financial support, volunteering (skilled and unskilled roles, on and off site positions) and helping to advocate for safe, decent, affordable housing in the local region. Go online at www.habitat.org.au for more information.

ARABESK ARE BACK TO FILL YOUR SOUL Arabesk are back at taste and ready to delight your senses, playing a brand of music that is often described as Gypsy Soul. For those wishing to embark on a journey of musical exploration not ruled by any cultural boundary, they guarantee to put some real “gypsy” in your “soul”. An added bonus this year Michael Shafran will be the attendance, an established food and wine journalist based in Sydney and who makes regular appearances in Melbourne and New York. Michael contributes to MasterChef Magazine, The Foodies’ Guide to Sydney, SBS Food, OutThere and other well-regarded food and travel magazines and websites such as his blog gosstronomy and currently head of content for www.theagendadaily.com Now the last time that Arabesk came to Canowindra they played to a sold out venue at taste, so make sure you book your tickets now to avoid disappointment on the night. Arabesk have adopted many international sounds and moulded them into their own unique style, a musical journey of discovery that has taken them from the tradition-steeped back streets of Eastern Europe to the bustling bazaars of Turkey. Added to this worldly brew are a list of influences that include luminaries such as guitarist Django Reinhardt, jazz drummer Elvin Jones, tango master Astor Piazzola and bassist Stanley Clarke. Originally formed in 2003 Arabesk includes Veren Grigorov (violin/viola), Rob Shannon (guitar/d’rrbuka), Calvin Welch (drums/percussion) and bass player for this gig is Rory Brown. Free wine tasting, three course meal & show plus coffee with our stars is only $75 per person. Bookings are essential by phoning 02 6344 2332 or online at www.tastecanowindra.com.au

Rugby Union On Saturday the Canowindra Pythons hit the road for the first time this year to take on old foe the Blayney Rams. With the weather being possibly the best day for football in Blayney in many years the boys were keen to take the field. From the kickoff the Pythons were able to turn possession over and go straight on the attack and put plenty of pressure on the Blayney defence. With Adam Smith charging a clearing kick down from Blayney it appeared that Adam Nash had got to the ball first and ground it however the referee was not in a good position to award the try so gave Blayney a 22 drop out instead. This seemed to upset the Pythons and allow Blayney take control off the game and over the next 30 minutes put three converted tries and a penalty goal on the scoreboard. With only 5 minutes to go in the first half the Canowindra team seemed to wake up again and start play-ing some aggressive football, especially in defence, and put Blayney back on the back foot. The second half was a much better performance from the Canowindra boys with the whole team lifting to the level of football which they are capable of playing. However Blayney were up to the task of defending and the game was fairly evenly played, with both teams having opportunity to put some points on the board. Though Canowindra was the only team to score in the second half - just before full time Jayson Clout was able to put Adam Smi th in the gap fo r the young Englishman to barge over for the try. Tom Abbott slotted the extra 2 points to leave the score 22-7 in Blayney's fa-vour. Points for the day: Adam Nash got 3; Alex Myres got 2 for his usual tough and hard running game; 1 point went to Adam Grant and Nigel Knight. Players' Player went to Granty also. This weekend the Canowindra Pythons play host to the Orange Waratahs at the Sports Oval for a 3:15pm kick off. Bring a picnic and make a family day of it. Come and cheer the boys on and hope-fully get them back on the right side of the score board.

RUGBY LEAGUE Life memberships were awarded to John Slattery and Dick Marsh on Saturday. These two gentleman have over 90 years of involvement with the Tigers between them. Congratulations to them both. Woodbridge Cup Youth League Canowindra took on the Goannas in the youth league competition on Saturday and were on top from the opening minutes with Brydon Hughes scoring near the uprights. Canowindra maintained their dominance with Brendon Zahra scoring off a Dan Middleton kick. Shortly after Ethan Drennan scored under the posts, converted by Phil Tarrant making the score 14 -0. Phil Tarrant threw a great pass to Nick Willson who put the ball under the posts setting up the easy conversion or Matt McLean. Just before half time Blake Willson scored a good try which took the score to 26-0 at half time. Canowindra started making silly mistakes early in the second half but held strong keeping Grenfell out. Tom Roth scored to get Canowindra going forward again. Phil Tarrant scored off a great off load from Nick Willson. Canowindra finished with Harry Myers scoring under the posts. The final score was 52 - 4. Credit must go to the Grenfell club for fielding a team after lacking numbers in this age group and the under 16s for a number of years. This effort has allowed Woodbridge Cup to field 6 teams in this competition for 2011 a great achievement. League Tag: It was all one way traffic in the league tag, match with the Tigresses running out 13-3 winners over the Girlannas. Maddie Vitnell, Sally McLean and Jess Cantle were too fast for the opposition as the Canowindra girls dominated the day. First grade: The senior Tigers went into Saturday’s game with a host of stars out, and it certainly af-fected them, they were well short of fantastic. In a mistake riddled game the Tigers went down 28-24 in a game that was certainly there for the taking. Midway through the second half some tough play from Willie Lafolafo and Peter Pita lifted the Tigers giving them the momentum until it was snuffed out by Grenfell centre Junior Vatikani with a charge down and regather to score under the posts. For the Tigers they were best served by Peter Pita and Wally Gaeta who continually tried to give the Tigers some momentum. This week the Tigers travel to Cargo to take on the Blue heelers. With a 2pm kick off on Sunday The Tigresses take on the Blue Sheeler Pups at 1pm and the youth league side have the bye. Whats on: The Tigers have bales of Mulch Hay for sale. The cost is $3 per bale and we are happy to deliver them in Canowindra. Please contact Andrew Pull for orders and delivery 6344 2244.
