Principal’s Column Community Consultation Evening Many thanks to the teachers, students and parents who took part in our Community Consultation Evening last Monday. We considered the ways in which school community feedback from our previous Community Consultation Evening had been used to draft three new Strategic Directions for our School Plan 2018 – 2020. This included the different projects that teachers, students and parents felt the school should pursue within each of these Strategic Directions. The bulk of the evening, however, was devoted to discussions among teachers, students and parents about what practices should happen across the school every day if these projects are to be successful, and how members of our school community could be supported in engaging with these practices. Our next step will see the school’s leadership team considering how best to implement these projects, then monitor their progress and evaluate them over the next three years. This will also involve the question of how we are going to use our Gonski funding to pay for it all.

Stage 5 Exams Students in Years 9 and 10 will begin their Yearly Exams next week and, no doubt, have been working with their teachers to prepare for these exams. This will be an important time for all students to apply themselves to the best of their ability, with teachers writing reports for the end of the year soon after the completion of these exams. Year 10 students will also need to complete these exams with diligence and application if they are to qualify for their Record of School Achievement (RoSA). Positive Behaviour for Learning With the above in mind, next week’s PBL focus will be on revising our whole school approach to study skills, in particular reminding students of the work they have done this year during mentoring lessons which have followed up on our study skills seminar. Many thanks to Mrs O’Keeffe and Mr Bassingthwaighte for their ongoing coordination of our study skills program. Cricket Success Well done to our Under 14’s cricket team for their resounding win against Banora Point High School last Thursday. Kingscliff scored a massive 214 runs in 26 overs (8 runs an over). Jake Weir scored 52 not out, while Hayden Wilson scored 49, Jack Charlton scored 30 and Harry Bassingthwaighte scored 24. In reply, Banora were bowled out for 87 in 16 overs. Jack Corliss and Jake Weir did the damage with the ball, taking 4 wickets a piece, whilst Harry Bassingthwaighte and Bailey Roberts each took testing catches in the field. The team now plays the winner of Mullumbimby and Byron Bay High Schools. Thanks to Mr Bassingthwaighte for coaching the team. Multi Category Class Construction Our permanent classrooms for special needs students have been under construction this term, and will certainly be a state of the art facility on completion due primarily to the exceptional work of Mrs Rosser, our Head Teacher Special Education, in liaising with both our school community and the Department’s Asset Management Unit in order to ensure the new facility will meet the needs of students and contribute to the overall capacity of our school to deliver high quality education for all of its students.

All of our students are to be congratulated for continuing to make safe and responsible choices around the ongoing construction work. Community Mural Mr Holliday has been doing some amazing work with his talented art students on a very large street mural addressing the theme of “growth”. The mural features a range of Tweed area images, including one of our more famous former students, Stephanie Gilmour. Senior art students Reuben Bartz and Indie Bolton-Hardy have been instrumental in the project, which is now half way to completion. The mural is being developed on site at Kingscliff High School and will be moved to its eventual home on the rear fence of the Offspring Day Care Centre in Chinderah, backing on to a highly visible sight near the roundabout under the Pacific Highway Kingscliff exit. I am looking forward to the mural’s completion and, no doubt, its contribution to our local ambience. Youth Frontiers The 2017 Youth Frontiers program concluded on Friday 20 October with a culminating event - The Showcase- held at Banora Point High School at 5.00pm. The program included students from four Northern Rivers High Schools - Ballina Coast, Murwillumbah, Banora Point and Kingscliff. Friday’s Showcase involved a small group of community minded Year 8 and 9 students from Kingscliff and Banora Point High Schools, sharing their community projects in the presence of local MP Mr Geoff Provest, Banora Point High School. Principal Mr Chris Randle, Kingscliff High School. Deputy Principal Mr Barry Cowell, and teacher Mrs Kim Rodenburg as well as family members, community members and the student’s mentors. Participating Kingscliff High School students were:

• Bruce Thomas (Year 8) • Erin Philips (Year 9) • Elijah Williams (Year 9) • Jessica Payne (Year 9)

The program has involved a dedicated group of community mentors working one-on-one with these students to develop a project of their choice in support of a community group or community issue about which they were passionate. The outcome of the students’ efforts and the mentors expertise, patience and guidance was evident to all who attended the Showcase of the student’s projects on Friday. Some of the project topics included: supporting senior citizens, addressing youth mental health issues, enhancing community recreational facilities, caring for environment, providing peer-support for children living in out of home care, enhancing animal welfare and supporting the homeless. Wishing all of our school community a great week. Michael Hensley Principal

Cricket Last week the North Coast Open boy’s cricket trials were held at Sawtell. Kingscliff High School had Tim Spencer, Mitchell Boyd, Zac Jones, Josh Cameron, Will Sixsmith, Harry Bassingthwaite and Jayden McNamara all attend and represent Far North Coast in a two day carnival. All boys played exceptionally well. In this process Tim Spencer (Year 11) and Mitchell Boyd were selected in the North Coast team and Zac Jones being a shadow reserve.

The selected boys now go to Barooga to play in the state championships in Week 5 and the school like to wish them luck in there adventure.

Volleyball On Friday 20 October 2017 Miss Fitzhugh and Mr Haddon took four teams to represent Kingscliff High School in the Far North Coast Volleyball Knockout. The students were lucky enough to play on the new commonwealth game courts on Coolangatta Beach. The four teams played extremely well considering the hot weather and all being new to the sport of beach volleyball. They displayed the Kingy’s spirit in each game and resulted in the senior boy’s team and junior girls team making it to the semi-final. Our junior boys team took out the win in the grand final in an exciting three set match. Well done boys! They will now progress to the next level host in Byron Bay in Week 6. The following students who attend should be very proud of themselves:

Senior boys: Dane McIntosh, Isaac Williams, Liam Hardy, Luke Spotswood and Aston Saunders.

Junior boys: Tuveia Leon, Brandon Okeke, Kailani Evans, Jack Craig, Jarius Murphy-Phillips and Silas Brinsmead.

Senior girls: Chloe Thurgate, Janaya Reynolds, Eleanor Gough, Lily Pearce and Tori Clements.

Junior girls: Chloe Brown, Olivia Murdoch- Boss, Shanti Gabriel, Tahlia Evans and Sienna Felton.

LASTA istem USA Connor Mackenzie and Zachary Allen (Year 10) participated in the LAZSTA iSTEM USA Space Camp trip from 23 September to 10 October 2017. Their experiences included: The Intrepid Sea-Air Space Museum in New York, the Liberty Science Museum, International Spy Museum, Air and Space Museum, National History Museum and the Space Camp at Huntsville. They also attended the Lion King Broadway Show, were spectators at a New York Mets game and went to Disneyland, Hollywood and Universal Studios. It was an exciting, fantastic experience for both students

The experience was organised by Ken Silburn, a highly regarded NSW science teacher and has become an annual event. Any 2018 Year 10 who is interested for 2018, please see Mrs O’Keeffe in Science.

We would like to thank the Kingscliff High School P&C for donating funds to assist the two students to attend this fantastic adventure.

“The best things we did at space camp in my opinion was the Mars Mission activity. We had to do basic operations for three hours to ensure that we were able to survive on a hostile planet. This allowed us to learn things about these missions and to gain communication skills which led to friendships that will last forever.

We also got to travel across the USA and visit New York, Washington, Atlanta, Huntsville and Los Angeles. We saw many famous monuments.

I would encourage any student who has an interest in space, engineering and overseas travelling to consider this experience.

I would like to thank the Kingscliff High School P&C for assisting with paying for this fantastic experience.”

Zachary Allen

“My favourite part about the space camp was the Mars Mission Activity because I had the opportunity to be the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This was very interesting because I had to diagnose a range of medical anomalies and treat them with different medicines and equipment. I enjoyed this experience because I plan to be a surgeon, so the treatments were very interesting.”
