My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Redneck Records Strategic Consultant/Radio Promotions Bob Mitchell discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts:1. B.B. King and Asleep At The Wheel, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, 1981: My wife Anne and I saw these two shows on our honeymoon, on separate nights. We have seen B.B. probably 20 times since, and I have worked on three different record deals with

my friend Ray Benson.2. Merle Haggard, The Blackboard Bar: Being from Bakersfield, I got to see a lot of great music growing up. At age seven, my father snuck me in to hear Haggard sing. My favorite obscure tune of his is “Shelly’s Winter Love.” 3. Gram Parsons: He is one of my all-time favorites. I love his work: the Byrds’ Sweetheart of The Rodeo album; the Flying Burrito Brothers; solo; and the duets with Emmylou Harris. “Love Hurts” by those two is breathtaking. My favorite is “Wheels” by the Flying Burrito Brothers. For those of you in Nashville that gave Gram and the Byrds a bad time back in 1968, what wasn’t country about “Hickory Wind”?4. Conway Twitty/That’s My Job: Since losing my Pop a few years ago, I have yet to make it through a listening of this song without squalling.5. Stevie Ray Vaughan/Crossfire: When I am in Dallas, I usually visit his grave and turn this up to 11.6. Paul McCartney, Coachella, 2009: Watching Sir Paul sing “Let It Be” from 50 feet away, with your arms around your family, is pretty happening. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Morrissey’s Greatest Hits. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Yanni, Live At The Acropolis.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: You are going to think I am being a kiss-ass, but I wouldn’t have rearranged my life and moved halfway across the country if I didn’t love the Gretchen Wilson project, I Got Your Country Right Here, I am working on right now.

and wife Allison Burchett, signed by Governor Bredesen and Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey. The ‘IVK staff presented Hammond with a lovely clock engraved, “To everything there is a time, and now is yours,” including a photo inside of his family. Revelers heard several performances (see photo, page 6), partied until midnight and heard an eight-minute audio clip of countless artists calling in their congratulations. The club also screened Taylor Swift’s humorous, heartwarming introduction from Hammond’s induction in Nashville. TheeventwascreatedbyTraffic/ContinuityDirectorCindy Arnold and evening personality Jack Ryan. Arnold says, “We had no idea it would be this big.” Ryan, who also is Hammond’s son, adds, “We had thought about doing something for him after his induction, but it was right in the middle of CRS. “A lot of people made this happen, and we were just taken back by the response,” Ryan says. “It’s great that Mike’s able to enjoy this because he’s still in the middle of his career.”

On A Vote To Vegas (continued from page 1) “The videos are making it a fun and entertaining experience, and collectively engaging the fan base. Some artists get into it more than others, but what I’ve found interesting is that at the end of the day, the fans really want to campaign. The artists don’t really have to do that much, and they don’t even have to ask for it. The number of people who put out messages encouraging people to vote before the artists even acknowledged they’d been nominated is tremendous.” Entertainer of the Year campaigns haven’t been quite as exuberant as the New Artist stump videos. Yet. And that’s likely a reaction to an ongoing perceptual change from a highly-esteemed industry-voted honor to a straight-up popularity contest. Entertainer nominee Brad Paisley recently acknowledged his struggles with the concept. “I’m uncomfortable campaigning,” he said at the No. 1 party for “American Saturday Night.” “I understand that people love to get involved, and it’s cool that they can, but vote for whoever you want ... If it’s me, that’s great. If it’s not I’ll stand up and clap for whoever wins. And I think it’s great that they’re doing things differently, making the [two major awards] shows different; they can’t be two different versions of the same thing.” Paisley’s comments recall those of first-year fan-voted EoY

winner Kenny Chesney. “I do think the fans should be a part of this awards show, but I’m one of the guys in the audience that didn’t think it should be for Entertainer of the Year,” Chesney said backstage at the 2008 show after his win. And almost prophetically, “It’s a different award if they continue to do this.” Clearly, EoY is a different award, and while Paisley’s comments show the transition to be incomplete, artists are warming to the new paradigm. Six of the eight Entertainer nominees – Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Zac Brown Band and even Paisley – link to the www.acmvote.com site from their homepages. Some have sent emails to their fan clubs encouraging the vote. Only two, George Strait and Chesney, display no outward signs of campaigning on the public portion of their websites.

Because ACM voting is limited to one vote per person, Frank says it’s no less reliable an indicator than under prior methodology. “Fan voting, with the proper measures in place, really does give a true sense of what is most popular,” he says. “That makes Entertainer of the Year every bit as important as it’s ever been.” And with increasing fan engagement, the vote may be creating anewandpositiveenergy.“Thisyear, forthefirsttime, wehavea sponsor for the vote in Dodge Ram,” Frank says. Thereareotherbenefits, aswell.“Anynotionthatthecountrymusic base isn’t tech savvy is completely incorrect,” he points out. “The voting levels increase year over year. They are always substantially above my expectations prior to the show and absolutely huge during the show. This audience gets it and has the technology.” CAC
