utilities (+1,800 or +4.2%) were hampered by a reduction in wholesale trade (-2,300 or -3.8%). Manufacturing (-800 or -1.3%), other services (-400 or -1.1%) and construction (-100 or -0.3%) shed employment from the same month a year ago.

In the Newark Labor Area, employment was down due to staffing reductions in lei-sure and hospitality (-2,800 or -2.9%), pro-fessional and business services (-1,900 or -0.9%), manufacturing (-1,800 or -2.4%), and government (-800 or -0.5%). On a bright note, gains in TTU (+3,500 or +1.4%), con-struction (+1,300 or +2.9%), and educational and health services (+700 or +0.4%) helped balance the area’s employment losses. Fi-nancial activities, information and other ser-vices experienced no change since Decem-ber 2015.
