Decades of research show that the participation of families in their child’s education, through specific coordinating between home and school, results in improved outcomes (Jeynes, 2012). PEP Conferences are designed to promote family and school partnerships that are essential in supporting students with disabilities and their families in schools and the community. PEP brings families and professionals together by sharing ideas, discussing concerns, celebrating successes and obtaining information related to parenting, educating and partnering to support student learning. PEP is a non-specific disability conference that focuses on commonalities.

E NRICH U PDATES FOR FALL 2017

Please join us in welcoming Sandy Rubino to the ATAT team!

Sandy will be supporting the North Central quadrant, previously supported by Betty Beaman. Having taught in an elementary SSN3 program for 13 years, Sandy brings a very strong background in special education. Her main focus is inclusion, and more specifically, finding ways for all students to gain access to curriculum and have meaningful social interaction with peers in the general education classroom. She has worked with students with various disabilities who needed support for communication, academics, social interaction, and daily living skills. She is very excited to work with students and teams with assistive technology needs, and helping them increase student access and engagement with the curriculum.

How will you know if the iPad is enrolled in JAMF? Look for this app:

School Social Workers: If you need a cognitive assessment to be completed at your school, you will need to make this request to the District Assessment Team through the online Cognitive Request Form: https://sites.google.com/a/jeffcoschools.us/special-education/cognitive-request

Please review the request guidelines before making requests to the assessment team.

Once you have determined you need to make a request, click on the link at the bottom of the webpage to complete the form to submit a request.

An assessment team member will then get back to your team (usually within 1-2 weeks) to set up testing/ask you more questions once we have assigned the request to one of our team members. If you have not heard from us after 2 weeks, please submit the request again. We had a few times last year when the request form glitched and we did not receive the request. You should get a confirmation page after pressing submit stating "Your response has been recorded" with a link to submit another request.

We request at least a 30 day advance request notice before the evaluation is due.

A BIG thank you from your Assessment Team!

This year, along with the Certify provider validation email, a second Certify IEP validation email will be generated for overdue IEP’s or evaluations. Essentially, the Enrich caseload report will trigger a Certify scorecard if an IEP or evaluation is overdue for finalizing. This is not a new task for school-based staff. Certify is simply notifying staff of events that are overdue for a variety of reasons. Overdue events can cause the district to lose funding on the October and December student counts.

If a validation appears to be on the report in error, i.e. incorrect dates on an IEP, discuss the issue with your SPED Partner for resolution.

Finally, below are tips to significantly reduce Certify scorecard errors:

Assign (or reassign) Team Leads, Primary Providers, and all Service Providers for every student immediately upon the start of school, when finalizing a new IEP, and when there is a change in school of attendance.

Utilize the Enrich Caseload Report to determine timeline of events.

Make an effort to finalize all events within five days.

Do not rely on Enrich chevrons for due dates.

As always your Compliance Technician is available for assistance.

Functional Communication Training (FCT)

What is it? Replacing problem behaviors with communication

When to use it? Use it to teach the child more socially appropriate ways to communicate.

It’s important to select a modality (words, pictures, sign, device) that can be understood across environments, by multiple people, and is easy for the child to use (“chair” instead of “I want chair please”).

Click here for a printer-friendly version

Attention Escape Tangible Automatic

BIG IDEA Provide the child with attention (in the form the child likes) frequently so they don’t have to ‘act out’ to get that attention.

What is the child trying to escape from? What can the adults do to modify what the child is trying to escape from?

Provide boundaries around the access and use of tangi-bles.

Teach when it is appropriate to engage in automatic behavior.

Proactive - What can you do to prevent problem behavior from occurring?

- Provide lots of attention throughout the day.

- Have students work in groups

- Send child to do errands (access attention when they go to the office, an-other classroom, etc).

- Assign classroom jobs and praise completion of them.

- Break tasks down into simple and manageable parts.

- Make activities more engaging!

- Give choices for things that don’t matter. Ex) choice of what order they complete the task, what utensil they write with, where they do the work

- Give access to the desired item.

- Inform the student about when they can access what they want (“I hear that you want the iPad. First two problems, then iPad.”

- Use a written or visual schedule to show child when they will access what they want.

- Provide the child with appropriate times and locations to engage in the automatic behavior.

FCT- What can you teach the child to say that serves the same function as problem behavior?

- “Talk to me.” - “Look.” - “Play with me.”

- “I don’t under-stand.” - “Break please.” - “Leave me alone.” - “Help.” - “I want to leave.”

- “More time.” - “Turn please.” - “Can I have that?” - “When will I get ____?”

- “Yellow time.” (Child engages in automatic behavior in yellow setting only.)
