Drollinger Properties wants to thank the firefighters of the Los Angeles City Fire Department who responded to the fire at the Westchester PETCO on April 30.

LAFD received the call around 5:15 a.m., and dispatched more than 100 firefighters to the scene.

First responding units, about 55 firefighters, were able to extinguish the fire in 24 minutes.

The blaze was contained to the roof and attic of the two-story pet supply store before it could spread to adjoining businesses.

No animals were killed, according to LAFD Battalion Chief Armando Hogan. At least 12 dogs along with hamsters and goldfish were rescued by firefighters, and firefighters also removed large fish tanks from the building.

Thank you also to Dr. Henry Yoo and the Westchester Veterinary Center and Cat Clinic staff, who treated a number of animals who experienced smoke inhalation and other injuries in the incident.

PETCO, which completely emptied its store and remodeled after the fire, reopened on Friday, June 6.

“Times like this show us how incredible our community really is,” said Drollinger Properties President Karen Dial. “The firefighters were incredible. Dr. Yoo helped out in an emergency situation. PETCO was resilient and reopened sooner than anyone thought possible!”

Life Here & ThereEvery day we are writing the story of our lives. We are accomplishing what we can for those we love and appreciate. We are improving ourselves and making the world a better place. We are working hard, building buildings and enhancing life’s landscape. We are answering phone calls, sending emails, bringing home the bacon, and frying it up in a pan; but at what cost?

I am enjoying reading Arianna Huffington’s book (see the Book Jewel) about realizing the need to slow down and focus. Turn our phones off, unplug our electronic devices and breathe. Get more than ample sleep to allow for efficient and productive work days. Go home at the proper time and rejuvenate. You will be more productive to the company, make fewer mistakes and open up your creative side.

As a leader, I need to ask myself, “Do I encourage thoughtful, mindful interactions at home, in the workplace and in the boardroom? Do I show people how to work smarter, not harder? Do I reward productivity rather than busy work?”

As I read Thrive, I’m pleased that I added many company amenities about eight years ago including redesigning our work spaces for privacy and updating colors and furniture, including making sure every Drollinger employee has a chair that suits his or her body perfectly and comfortably.

We have added a large fridge/freezer to store food, filtered water, Vita Mix and all ingredients to make kale/fruit shakes every morning as well as a work out room complete with TV and VCR, yoga room with instructed class twice a week. We offer our employees Personal Time Off for mental health days and/or for attending their kids’ athletic events and performances. I want to make our workspace an oasis for productivity and efficiency so people actually enjoy coming to work. Heck they can pick a gardenia every day for their desk, if they want.

Through meditation, a mindful pause, or prayer, take a mental-minute for yourself several times a day to clear your mind, reset your intentions, focus on your desired outcome and invite great wisdom to be present in everything you do.

Namaste,

Making A Differencein TanzaniaThe Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation recently contributed to the new dormitory facilities at the Soit Sambu Secondary School in Tanzania. The new facility, pictured below at left, replaces the former dorm, where 160 girls lived in an area built to accommodate just 48. The school is located in Maasai ancestral lands in northeastern Tanzania in one of the more remote areas of the country. Soit Sambu Secondary School is the only one of its kind in the area. “The students at the school are incredible,” said Karen Dial after a recent visit. “Making their living conditions better means they can focus on their studies and get an education, which makes a real difference in their lives and the lives of their families.”Karen

In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case for the need to redefine what it means to be successful in today’s world. As more and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office. Our current definition of success is, as Thrive shows, literally killing us. We need a new way forward.
