As we approach the end of the school year, and the traditional Christmas events and celebrations that go with it, I would like to thank the school councillors, the staff and the parents and volunteers for your hard work and everything you all do to make a difference for the students and families in our community!

While the pace and demand of our work rarely lets up, as a community we are all highly engaged in ensuring every child, without exception, receives an outstanding education.

I am confident that by continuing to work together we can further extend the high quality of what we do at Bur-wood Heights Primary School.

Whatever your family tradition at this time of the year, I hope you enjoy this special time with family and friends and return refreshed in 2019 ready to continue to work together on the things that we know make a real difference.

For those not returning I wish you all happiness and hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as we have.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

I would like to acknowledge the strong partnership between school community members and the school and the positive family-school partnership that we have.

School Council members are such an integral part of our school, as it is they who contribute at a policy level to the school’s programme development, its innovation and wider community relationships. It is this strong positive fami-ly-school and community relationship that brings together family and community resources to enrich student learn-ing and well-being.

The end of the school year is tinged with mixed emotions. Our Year Six students will be leaving us, ready to fly into secondary schooling and soar into further success. There are no limits to what they can achieve. There are many students who commenced here nine-years ago and staff has nurtured and cared for them as they have devel-oped into the fine young people who will be exiting the school shortly. The deep emotional commitment to all our students is most apparent.

Just as strong relationships and bonds have been forged between staff and students, so too with staff and school councillors. The good and hard times have been shared between all members of school councillors. This is what gives strength to us all.

I acknowledge and thank Mr Nash, who has been a member of our school community since the commencement of the kindergarten, which is in its tenth year. He has been a highly valued member of School Council during this time, and has been School Council President for the past four years. Although his daughter is graduating from our school this year, I am hoping he will decide to remain on our school council in the future.

Similarly, Mr James Bartram’s daughter will be graduating next week, so he too may remain on school council. His young son will commence school here in a few years.

FAREWELL ASSEMBLY

FAREWELL AND THANK YOU

It is the time of year we say “Farewell and Thank You” to staff who are leaving us at the end of this year.

Mrs Megan Herdman has been a member of staff for eight years and is ventur ing on a “Real Life Adventure” of her own. Mrs Herdman and her family is heading up north to live and work. Mrs Herdman is well known to, and respected by, most at Bur-wood Heights as a staff member and co-ordinator. Her calm, warm and patient ap-proach to life, her sense of fair-play and her welcoming smile will be greatly missed. I wish her all the very best and wish her every happiness for the year ahead.

Mrs Jessica van de Lugt has been a member of staff for four years and will be heading to a “brand new” school in the far east of Melbourne. Her positive and enthu-siastic approach to everything has endeared her to all. Mrs van de Lugt has fully sup-ported every school activity and assisted where ever needed, which has been sincerely appreciated by all staff members here. We will certainly miss her enthusiasm and pos-itive outlook on life, as well as her marvellous culinary skills. Mrs van de Lugt has given much to the school during her time with us and I know she will be highly val-ued at her new school. I wish her every success for the next stage of her life and teaching career.

Ms Iris Ferwerda is also having a year away from teaching on the invitation of the Victorian Opera Company. She will continue to lead and train our choir and con-duct individual singing lessons. Teaching does require so much additional use of voice. For those who have heard Ms Ferwerda sing, they will be understand why she would want to pursue a career at this musical level. Her progress is certainly one we will all watch with great interest. The school has benefitted considerably having Ms Ferwerda as a staff member. I wish her every success as she commences this truly soul-lifting area of musical performance.

ASSEMBLY BANK OF BENDIGO AWARDS

Alistair Lau and Henry Tang received a 2019 Bank of Bendigo Award last Friday. Both these students have shown personal growth, made a contribution to the school community, are conscientious and apply them-selves at all times and are very responsible and co-operative school mem-bers.

CONGRATULATIONS

A huge thank you to all those who assisted on the night with either our book stall, drink stall,

giving out ribbons and icy poles, cooking, setting up and/or packing up. It was a fantastic evening.

Wildlife Warriors

The wet weather couldn’t dampen the Middle School’s spirits as we ventured

off to Healesville Sanctuary.

In class we have been studying endangered animals. We were able to extend

our knowledge while getting up close to some of the local animals that need

our help.

To kick-start our day we bounded to the billabong where we learned all about

the unique platypus. Did you know that it was thought to have been a hoax

when it was first discovered by the British? We then admired the little penguins

after adventuring in the aquarium. We saw many animals and adored the

power and grace of the birds of prey.

We explored how to conserve our local species by making small changes that

will ultimately make a big difference. Some ways we can help at home are:

Recycling paper and plastic

Not littering

Don’t use single use plastic bags and straws

Use toilet paper made from recycled paper (check out the ‘wipe for wild-

life’ initiative)

‘Blow bubbles not balloons’ at celebrations.

1/2P! The Junior School students

focused on Persuasive

Writing this term. Persuasive

writing is used to persuade or

convince a reader of a

writer’s point of view or

opinion. When we read

these texts, we often see an

argument being presented.

The argument is either for or

against a topic. These types

of texts are not used for

entertainment, but rather are

used to persuade or

convince. Grade 1/2P wrote

persuasive texts on a range

of important topics.

Lunch Orders

For lunch orders on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, we use Classroom Cuisine.

Orders must be placed before 8:30am and ordered online at www.classroomcuisine.com.au.

For lunch orders on a Tuesday, we use Subway. Orders must be placed at the office by the Thursday prior.

School Supervision

The school yard is supervised in the mornings between 8.35am and 8.50am and in the

afternoon between 3.30pm and 3.45pm.

Students at school before 8.35am will need to go to Before School Care with TheirCare.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is located in the Multi-purpose Room of the E.Wood Centre. It is open on Thursdays from 8:30am – 9:30am and 2.30pm – 3.45pm.

Orders can be handed in to the office at anytime. Please note: payment must be made prior to uniform being received.
