Harmony Day 2014

“Everyone Belongs”

Harmony Day is celebrated throughout Australia in March. It is a significant day of the year when our school celebrates the cultural diversity of our community. The theme for this year is “Everyone Belongs”. This message encourages us to participate in our community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

To highlight and reinforce this message we have recently undertaken a number of activities . They include:

• Students have produced symbolic hand shapes during their Art Program to represent the message. These very colourful statements are on show in our Memorial Garden alongside Room 11. The school would like to thank Mrs Heloise Roberts for her fantastic guidance to inspire the students to produce such great work.

• Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. We have encouraged our students and staff to wear something orange today to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Whole School (K to Year 7) Theme Days 2014 This year we will be undertaking a significant number and variety of, in class and whole school programs and events to explore the Cross Curriculum Priorities, which are a significant part of the Australian Curriculum which are working hard at implementing at our school.

During Term 1, 2 and 3 of this year the school will work on one priority per term as a focus leading up to and during our designated “Whole School Theme Days”

The theme for each term will be: • Term One - Sustainability: This focuses on protecting our environment and creating a more

ecologically and socially just world through informed action. These actions involve exploring a balanced approach to the way humans interact with each other and the environment.

• Term Two - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures: This provides opportunities for us to deepen our knowledge of Australia by engaging with the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. This knowledge and understanding will enrich our ability to participate positively in the ongoing development of Australia.

• Term Three - Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia: This will help us develop a better knowledge and understanding of Asian societies, cultures, beliefs and environments. As well we will look the connections between the people of Asia, Australia and the rest of the world.

The first of our three 2014 Whole School Theme Days will be held on Tuesday, 2 April 2014. The theme for this will be Sustainability. The programme for the day will run from 8:50 am till 3:00 pm with different rotational activities scheduled for all students from K to Year 7.

The day will commence with a presentation to the school by Ms Linley Brown. She is from the Swan River Trust and will be coming to talk to us about what they do at the trust and how we can be involved. She will also explain about the “Dolphin Watch” program which is designed to educate us about our Swan River Dolphins.

The staff have done a wonderful job to design creative and interesting learning activities based on our theme. On behalf of the students and staff I would like to thank Ms Darrell Seal and her enthusiastic team for their very thorough planning and organisation for our first theme day for the year.

Parents/Carers are most welcome to come and join us for the day.

Stephen Hovitch Principal

Easter Hat Parade

The school will be celebrating our Easter Hat Parade on Friday 11 April 2014, at 9am on the Main Quadrangle. All family and friends are welcome to join in the celebration. A special visitor will be making an appearance.

It’s time to get creative and get your decorations ready to make a fun and fancy bonnet/hat for the parade.

ECC Easter Raffle

The Early Childhood Committee will be holding it’s annual Easter Raffle again this year. Raffle tickets will be sent home next week. Extra’s tickets will be available from the of-fice. You can also purchase your lucky tickets from the office prior to the draw at the Easter Hat Parade on 11 April.

There are be plenty of prizes to be won, so make sure you are in it, to win it.

Online Agreements

Last week, a package for each student ( K to 7) was sent home regarding the school’s online agreements. There is one agreement for students in Kindergarten to Year Three and another slightly different one for students in Year Four to Seven.

Please be aware each student needs to have completed an individual agreement and returned it to school.

If you didn’t receive one or need another please contact the front office and we’ll provide you with a copy.

It is important to have these returned as soon as possible.

P&C NEWS

Do you live on the river side of Guildford Rd? At the P&C meeting on Monday night we discussed the petition Lisa Baker (MLA) and Mark McGowan (Leader of the Opposition) are circulating to try and get flashing ‘40’ km/h speed limit signs for the school.

Those who were at the meeting thought a crossing on Guildford road was a far greater need and that we could approach Lisa Baker and ask her to support this. To begin, we need to know how many families live south of Guildford Road and feel unsafe making this crossing, as well as how many currently drive but would walk if there was a crossing.

We will also be contacting the parent organisation at St Columba’s to see if they want to join us in pursuing this. Please send any comments to the P&C email address (see below) or via our Facebook page.

Next Meeting…IMPORTANT We will be discussing our annual allocation of funds to the school so, if you want to have a say in how the money we raise is spent, please come along. We need 10 people (a quorum) at our meetings before we can vote on proposals so please join us on Monday 7th April at 7.30 pm in the Staff Room.

In the Know To keep in the loop, follow us on Facebook [Bayswater Primary School P&C], on Twitter @BayswaterPC or join our email list by sending your address to [email protected]. We also publish each fortnight in this newsletter.
