News from Water Stratford - April 2018 MOTHERING SUNDAY We celebrated Mothering Sunday with a well-attended service, with our young people well to the fore: Joe and Teddy took the collection and Anna and Eleanor baked some delicious cakes and cookies. Two of the hymns were accompanied by both Sara on keyboard and Liz on guitar. All the women present (and some that weren’t) were given posies – thanks to Lois for preparing them. Also thanks to Di and Sara for masterminding the refreshments, which were much appreciated. One of our grandsons is being taught to call this 'Ladies' Day' instead of 'Mothers' Day', presumably in order to include women who are not mothers. We prefer the traditional 'Mothering Sunday', which includes men as well – fathers do plenty of mothering these days! HISTORICAL DOCUMENT The archivist of Lincoln Cathedral has sent us a copy of the details of John Mason’s appointment as our priest in 1674. This image is now on our website (http://www.waterstratford.org.uk/john-mason/more-on-john-mason), though the translation may take a little longer as our Latin is somewhat rusty! CHURCH SERVICE AND ROTA There will be a service of Holy Communion on Easter Sunday, 1st April, at 11.15am. Di will clean and Susan arrange flowers.

The date has been set for the Tingewick Pre-School Pamper Evening on 8 Jun 18 at 7pm in the Village Hall so please keep your diaries free to support the local Pre-School

Tingewick Pre-School is a small, friendly Pre-School established in 1972. Originally started by parents the Pre-School has evolved into being an efficient group with highly trained staff. The Pre-School delivers the Early Years Foundation Stage to children aged 2-4 with an emphasis on having fun and learning through play. Ofsted registered and recently rated as Good. The Pre-School has a purpose-built building which is situated in the Roundwood School grounds. The Pre-School is a charity which is run by a volunteer committee who oversee the running of the Pre-School. The committee are responsible for governance of the Pre-School and fund raising in order to ensure the Pre-School continues to run and the children have access to the best possible facilities. The Charities Commission mandate that the Committee has a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer, without these positions filled there is a realistic possible that the Pre-School could close. The committee are currently looking for a replacement Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. There is minimal work involved and no previous experience is required, just a desire to help in the local community. Previous encumberments can provide full training and support to anyone who is interested in the positions. If you are interested in supporting the Pre-School then please inform the current Pre-School Committee Chairman, Gary Butler, on 07864982368 or [email protected] who can give you any extra details on what is involved.

More good News for Tingewick !! The Parish council are pleased to announce that The Village is now the proud owner of the recreation ground on Water Stratford Road. The purchase of this area of land from Bucks CC has been a lengthy one and was finally brought to this happy conclusion using funding

from the Bovis development provided to Tingewick for the betterment of the village and its residents. Previously the recreation ground had been rented to us by BCC on a monthly basis. This now secures that large piece of land into village ownership forever….so great news! Now that we own it …we now need to develop it into the multi-use sports and leisure area the village very much needs You may remember a survey was taken some time ago of what villagers wanted to see included on the recreation area and what came back was Tennis and Netball courts, 5 a side pitch and basketball court (these can all be provided in one area called a MUGA multi use games area) also an equipped Trim Trail, Skate Park, designated Picnic areas and an upgrade to the existing swings etc. Plus, a new changing Pavilion and tea room and designated car parking area So the plan is for exactly that. We are already working with Tingewick Football club and they are looking to expand their football teams age groups from September this year and with the new facilities on the horizon perhaps a Tingewick Cricket Club can be re-established… what about starting a Fitness Boot Camp there using the trail and all the lovely space that comes with it? All sorts of sporting opportunities could be made available. So now we need your help and support with fundraising. So, if there are any ideas out there then please get in contact and let us see what we can do together. We have the opportunity for additional funding from Bovis which would get us started with the multi-use games area and we will be looking into all sorts of grants and match funding to move the plans forward as quickly as we can. If any of you have any experience in fundraising please share your skills and knowledge … many hands make light work!! Lastly, we will be releasing information on The Tingewick Recreation Fund which will become the new fund raiser for this project and is part of the already existing Vale Lottery programme run by AVDC. This will replace the 100 Club that Ed Maxwell has looked after so well over many previous years. Tickets will be £1 each and there are weekly prizes ranging from £25 up to £25,000… so well worth buying a ticket for, while at the same time raising money for the village. There will be much more specific information on this following shortly - Look out for the green Logo !! le Lottery is a weekly lottery that directly supports good causes which benefit the Aylesbury Vale community.

An introduction to your local football club

Tingewick FC was only established in 2016 with the first game as an U14 squad in Sept that year. Considering the team was newly formed with only a small number of the boys having played together in earlier years, the team gelled

together very quickly and had a fantastic first season coming runners up in their division.

This season, having been promoted, we are Division 3 of the Milton Keynes and Border Counties Youth Football as an U15 team. We currently sit mid table having had 4 wins, 3 loses and a draw so far this season but we do have quite some games in hand due to recent poor weather resulting in a number of games being postponed.

Subject to weather, we play every other Saturday up at the Rec on Water Stratford Rd. We would always welcome local support so do feel free to come along and cheer us on from the side line. Tea & Coffee is available together with a warm welcome.

Next home game, due to the Easter break, is 21st April (usually 10am KO)

We hope, in the not too distant future, to have a younger team on board to give further football opportunities to the local community, so watch this space for further news or contact us if you have a child interested in playing or you would like more information.

If you would like to find out more about the club please visit our website http://tingewickfc.co.uk/ or our Facebook page “Tingewick Football Club”.

Tingewick Walkers The February walk started in the village of Fritwell, Oxfordshire. On a bitterly cold day it was surprising that so many keen walkers had decided to brave the elements. The route taken was along quiet country lanes and tracks through fields. Halfway through there was a blizzard, which was exciting and gave everyone the appearance of being a snowman. The snow shower was followed by welcome sunshine, although there was still a chill wind factor.

Coming back into Fritwell gave everyone a chance to walk through the churchyard and take a look inside the old church. Lunch was taken at The Fox and Hounds in Ardley, which had been newly refurbished the previous week. The walkers were honoured to be their first customers. If you would like to join the group, just turn up on the last Tuesday of the month at 10am outside Tingewick Village Hall and you will learn where you will be walking that day. Contacts are Peter on 01280 848739 or Sara on 01280 847594.

Help keep your children safe online

The internet is a fantastic place for young people to learn, play and socialise but it’s vital that they’re aware of its dangers and how to stay safe. Scam call claiming to be from Telephone Preference Service

Please be aware that we are receiving an increasing number of reports of phone calls purporting to be from the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). They generally ask if the subscriber is still receiving unwanted calls and, inevitably, this is usually the case because the TPS can only reduce the frequency of these calls.Sooner or later, in these calls, the caller will talk about payment to help provide a more comprehensive service.Do not be drawn in by this and do not make any such payments. It is probably just a ruse to get your bank card details. If you get the caller’s number (sometimes it is given) feel free to report it to TPS. They do not charge for their services.

Scam Alert

Please be aware of callers to your mobile or landline claiming to be from BT. A local West Oxon resident had reported yesterday to police that males with Indian accents have attempted to take £10,000 from their bank account. Fortunately, their bank has intercepted this transaction and no money was taken. Worryingly the scammers knew our callers personal details and even gave them reference numbers and told them their BT bill would go down. This is the advice from BT:Security warning - Fraud activities or scams.Scams where fraudsters are claiming to be from BT. We are aware that some customers are being contacted by individuals fraudulently claiming to be from BT or acting on behalf of BT. This type of fraud is an industry - wide problem that we are actively working to tackle. For the latest developments please check: www.bt.com/scamsPlease be very careful as criminals have been trying to trick customers into giving out their bank details. They might try to convince you that you owe money on your bill and threaten to disconnect your phone line immediately if you do not pay then over the phone. BT will never disconnect a phone line during the call. They might say that you have a fault or virus on your computer and then try to scare you by suggesting that your computer will stop working if you do not take action. They then try to persuade or coerce you into installing software, or ask you to perform commands on your computer with the intention of gaining remote access to your device. These fraudsters “spoof” the number they are calling from so if you dial 1471 you might see a fictitious number that masks the real destination. They may also offer you a cal back n umber to confirm legitimacy of their call and will then answer as if you are calling BT.Please remember that you can always check your account online to see if there are any problems. Just go to www.bt.com/mybtIf you are unsure about the caller here is what you can do:

Be suspicious of unsolicited calls relating to a security or system problem, even if the caller claims to represent a respected company. If we are getting in touch about your bill, it is usually be from either 0800328 9393 or 0800 028 5085.Ask security questions about your account before continuing the call. If the caller cannot answer, they are not legitimate.Never give out personal information, such as credit cards or bank details, to an unsolicited caller.Do not type anything into the computer, install software, visit any websites or follow any other instructions unless you are confident that the call is genuine.Do not agree to sign up for anything and under no circumstances let the caller take control of your computer system. This allows them to gain access to your personal files and harvest information. If you use a public or shared computer, be security conscious. Remember, each time you exit your account you should sign out completely by clicking the SIGN OUT link. This means anyone using the computer after you will not be able to access your account. If you suspect you have been a victim of a phone scam or are concerned about the security of your accounts, please see our Scams advice to see who to contact. We constantly monitor the network to safeguard our customers. If we detect suspicious account activity, which makes us believe that your account may be compromised or at risk, we will act to secure the account immediately. We will prompt you to change your password when you next log in. We never charge for support of this kind.We also have preventative measures available such as our BT nuisance call blocker phones that block up to 100% nuisance calls and advice on how we can help you deal with unwanted calls.

How to protect your email against criminals

Email accounts contain a wealth of sensitive information. Criminals can use your email to reset passwords or obtain personal and financial information, such as your bank details, full address or DOB, leaving you vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.Secure your email account with two simple steps…1 - Use a strong, separate password 2 - Enable two-factor authentication

Thefts from vans

Work vans are being broken into across Aylesbury Vale where tools have been taken. Four of these reports involved Citroen Dispatch vans where no damage has been caused in order to gain entry (the vehicles were believed to have been locked by the owners). This would suggest that the offenders are using a tactic in order to bypass the locking mechanism without using a key.

• Village Hall Wi-Fi and Roads: Cllr Maxwell

TVHMC have agreed to take over the WiFi responsibility at the end of TPC’s current service contract.

Roads; there are 3 councils and responsibilities are clouded but TPC have responsibility for very little. BCC / TfB mended over 20,000 potholes since new year; one marked near roundabout Monday, repaired Tues-day evening. One near garden centre not in Tingewick parish is Radclive parish and does not qualify for repair yet. Criteria for Category 1 potholes; 40mm deep and 300mm wide in any direction.202 Correspondence 202a – Speeding on Sandpit hill

TPC feel that all possibilities have been exhausted, it has been raised with Cllr Fealey numerous times and Cllr Lightfoot’s efforts to obtain a Sentinel speed camera were fruitless as Tingewick did not meet the TVP criteria.

As TPC have no budget or direct responsibility for this issue, residents are advised to contact BCC.

202b – Tingewick & District News

The new Editor has requested TPC minutes be shorter for inclusion in the publication, agreed changes will be made to the format of the minutes.

Cllr Fenemore commented that the Open Forum was not originally minuted except for in cases where items raised required action points.202c – Horticultural Society – planters for entrance of village

Cllr Lightfoot advised that a member of the Horticultural Society suggested planter boxes to beautify the Village entrances. It was agreed that the PC will cover the costs of the boxes if the Society can manage / maintain them.203 New General Data Protection Regulations
