What’s Inside

Dear QBC Community,

As the end of the term draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students and staff for a great start to the year. We have had a marvellous end to Term One: the Year 11 students enjoyed their camp on Rottnest Island; the Port to Pub swimmers have recovered from their monumental swim; and today the students have demonstrated their magnificent dance moves during the annual Interhouse Dance Off!

With Easter only around the corner, we should take some time to reflect on what Easter means to us. For some, we instantly think of the delicious chocolate eggs or hot cross buns, for others it means a 4-day long weekend, yet for those following Christ, this is the time of the year we remember the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for our sins followed by his resurrection. In the Bible we read:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

God gave his son Jesus as a sacrifice for the sins of the world to make us perfect and worthy of eternal life with him in the Kingdom of Heaven. As a parent, I cannot imagine the torture this would have been. God gave the life of one, to save the lives of many. We have unconditional forgiveness for our past, present and future sins – no matter what they are. This doesn’t mean we should go wild; we still will have to face consequences for our wrong actions. Yet because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we have the assurance that the gift of heaven and eternal life is ours if we desire it. We don’t always have to be perfect, but we do need to try our best to live a life that honours God, loves and cares for others and one that also respects our own individuality.

A little later in April, we commemorate another significant event – ANZAC Day. As the time approaches we reflect on the sacrifices our servicemen and women have made to protect the liberty and freedoms of our nation. On the 25th April 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces landed on the shores of Gallipoli to fight the Ottoman Empire forces in the Great War. Many gave their lives and many more suffered as a result. By extension, ANZAC Day has become a day of national reverence to honour the contributions of all Australians who have served to protect our land and freedom throughout the history of Australia.

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)

So take the time this Easter to remember the sacrifice God made for our salvation, made even more meaningful by the sacrifices made by many for the freedom we Australians enjoy today.

They never said it would be easy, they said it would be worth it... We trained

hard, were tested physically and mentally, but as a team we conquered. Out

on that ocean we pushed our limits: digging a little deeper, reaching a little

further, pushing a little harder and it was worth it. The further we swam, the

closer we became a team, encouraging one another to catch up to any boat

in front of us. Of course along the way there were some challenges... The

stingers a bit too friendly, the harsh bite of the wind and the ever increasing

roughness of the water, but through it all we endured. When people say the

best things in life are the hardest to obtain, they are not lying. To have had

the opportunity to swim to Rottnest in my last year of school, alongside such an extraordinary and encouraging

group of girls, is something I will never forget. Our heart felt thanks to our school for allowing us to participate

in this wonderful event and to Mr Bower for all his encouragement, time end effort training us, and for believing

in our abilities. Also a huge thank you to our skipper Mr Williams and our paddler Bryn Norman for giving up

their Saturday to support us and help us achieve our goals. We could not have done it with out them. QBC Deep

My experience of the Rottnest Swim taught me resilience and team values as well as to never watch

a shark movie the night before! I would highly recommend the experience to any student who is

capable, to give it a go -- after all, what have you go to lose. ‘What helps you persevere is your

resilience and commitment’ ~ Roy T. Bennett. Ebony Schell

The Rottnest Swim was a new experience. If you get the chance to swim the Channel, do it! After

all, how many people our age can say, “Yeah, I swam to Rottnest; what have you done?” Zak Birch

Port to Pub was an amazing experience. This year was definitely my favourite. I was part of a great

team, which made the day fun and very worthwhile. Danielle Janse Van Rensburg

Port to Pub was an unforgettable and eye-opening day. The effort, training and motivation were worth

the gratification of getting to Rottnest. The heatstroke, hypothermia, sea-sickness and bad sunburn

experienced by our team, did not stop us. We were a united front and Mr Percival kept our spirits

high during those moments we felt disheartened. He is a rig. Abby Plane

Port to Pub was the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience of my life. The sunburn, heatstroke

and hypothermia were completley worth it! The teamwork and the relationships you make are

priceless. I highly recommend it to other students. Caitlin Filmater

Rottnest was an amazing experience. It was challenging and tiring but it was my biggest achievement

so far. Everyone was so supportive and caring towards each other, even when we knew we had about

four more hours to go. Our team could not have done it without the amazing support from Mr Bower.

He was so encouraging and kind hearted the whole way, and he definitely kept the smiles on our

faces. This experience will definitely not be forgotten. Gracie Stocks

The day was exciting and fun. I’ve never seen so many boats all crowded together at the same time.

As I was swimming, I got to see tiny pink jellyfish floating underneath me and it was amazing. On

completion of the swim, I had this awesome feeling of, ‘I want to do it again’, rush through me. Given

the opportunity I would definitely do it again next year if given the opportunity. Nicci Venter

On Tuesday 19 March, the QBC Swim Team set off to Challenge Stadium to compete at the

2019 ACC Swim Carnival. The day went really well with good team participation and some

excellent personal bests. This resulted in a number of strongly contended races. It was

really good to see such great team spirit and everyone having a good time. At the end of the

Carnival, QBC ranked a close second over all, just missing out on 1st place by only a few

points. Awesome work QBC!

Year 11 Camp Last Wednesday, on 27 March, 92 QBC students and 10 staff members, left the Hillarys Marina

and sailed to Rottnest Island for the Year 11 Camp. With more than half of the students having

never been to the Island before, the conditions couldn’t have been more perfect for the entire 3

days we were there. On arrival the first thing we did was hire our bikes so we had transport while

on the Island. We then rode to the Kingston Barracks, which was to be our home base during our

stay. A photo rally was the first activity of the camp and the race was on! The rally gave students

the chance to orientate themselves with the Island. The activity the students weren’t expecting,

however, was the epic 12km night walk to the lights house. Here Mr Bower gave an inspiring chat,

which also helped to motivate us on the long journey back to the base. Day 2 was Cycle Day where

we formed groups according to which ride we chose to complete: the long ride (21km), the medium

ride (15km) or the short ride (8km). Along the way, students also got the opportunity to explore the

shallows with some spectacular snorkelling adventures. At the Basin, Ryan and Mr Charleston even

discovered some caves to dive through and explore. With all the strenuous bike-riding adventures

and other activities it was no wonder there were some minor injuries but, despite these, all our

students showed immense resilience and courage to push through the camp. Thursday night saw

the epic Games Night with produced some very creative and exciting events and revealed hidden

talents. On our last day, students were given the opportunity to explore the shops in the settlement

and have some fun on the water park. Many thanks to all the staff (the ‘Dream Team’) who made the

camp such an enjoyable and eventful venture. It was so great to see all the Year 11 students making

memories they’ll have forever. Christian Joubert

April 2019 Exam PreparationThis program will deliver a comprehensive exam preparation program aimed at preparing year 11 and 12 students for their first semester exams early in Term 2. These classes will focus on specific exam questions and explain in detail how the syllabus content can be employed to construct successful examination responses. These classes offer students a structured revision program that will add value to the independent study they are

doing at home.

Program includes:

Essay Writing: The essay writing program consists of four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It re-teaches the structure of a critical essay and reinforces the importance of constructing a sound thesis and topic sentences, and revises how to include evidence to justify these claims.

Study Skills: This program contains four hours of teaching broken up into one hour a day for the four days. It focuses on units such as exam techniques, stress management, goal setting and time management.

Subject Revision: This program contains 7.5 of teaching with a focus on reteaching and revising the specific syllabus areas that will be assessed in the first semester exams.

Exam Preparation: The classes focus on the revision of topics followed by a discussion on how this material is assessed in exam style questions. There is sufficient time within the program for teachers to model how to answer exam questions successfully as well as time for students to independently practice constructing their own answers. All the teachers involved in this program have significant marking experience and know what needs to be addressed to ensure students meet with success in exams.

A Successful Program

Students attending exam preparation programs report that they feel more confident tackling assignments and are better prepared to sit their exams.

Exam Preparation Program

April 2019

F.A.Q.How can students be assured that what they have learnt in semester one will be addressed in this program? The answer to this important question is really quite simple.

9 The foundation of our classes is the Western Australian curriculum which is the same syllabus guidelines used by the school.

9 Before the classes begin MMA sends out a questionnaire to all students participating in the program to find out exactly what topics and texts you have been studying and this information is forwarded to MMA’s teachers for inclusion in their programs.

9 This questionnaire also asks families to alert us of any specific weaknesses in the student’s knowledge that may have been identified by the school or the student so that this specific area can be re-taught by the MMA teacher.

April 2019 Revision Program

Overview

Mindarie Senior College, Peter Moyes Anglican Community School and Quinns Baptist College have joined forces to establish quality revision and exam preparation programs in the northern suburbs for all students living in the area.

The April classes will prepare students for their first semester exams early in term 2. The program provider MMA has a well-earned reputation for delivering some of the best education courses in the state and the cost of $130 per subject for 7.5 hours of teaching makes these classes outstanding value for families seeking academic support during the April holidays.

Structure

Classes will be delivered at Mindarie SC, Peter Moyes ACS and Quinns BC campuses. All three schools are located next to each other, which allows for easy movement between classes.

Program includes:

9 Essay Writing and Study Skills – 4 hours of teaching

9 Subject Revision – 7.5 hours of teaching

9 Exam preparation

9 Experienced teachers

9 Comprehensive revision booklets for each subject

Please note: A full refund is only paid where the scheduled class clashes with a school event or a doctor’s certificate is produced to verify illness.
