If you handle vehicle air con refrigerants, it is good practice to be F-Gas trained BUT essential if you/your garage are involved in F-Gas recovery. Vehicle air con systems are sealed, so if a system is losing (or has lost) refrigerant, clearly there is a leak. To protect the environment it is good practice to locate and fi x a leak before refi lling.

Current ACEA specifi cations

ACEA specifi cations for passenger vehicles are split into:

ACEA A/B (e.g. ACEA A3/B4): For vehicles requiring high SAPS

ACEA C (e.g. ACEA C3): Low SAPS‡ catalyst and diesel particulate fi lter friendly specifi cations to protect engines fi tted with exhaust after-treatment units

It is important to note that some ACEA specifi cations are not compatible. For example ACEA A/B and ACEA C are designed to contain unique performance characteristics, for example Sulphated Ash as shown in Figure 1.

ACEA A3/B4 versus A3/B4-04A suffi x indicates the sequence from which the specifi cation came. If there has been a sequence since that date it is superceded, thus A3/B4-04 is the A3/B4 standard introduced in 2004, not the current version in use (latest sequence 2012) (see Figure 2).

Though oil blenders need to know a formulation’s technical capability, strictly speaking use of a date suffi x when marketing oils is prohibited. A product must meet the current standard to claim that it meets ACEA A3/B4. If it only meets an obsolete specifi cation (from a former sequence) no claim should be made.

In simple terms, an oil that meets the current ACEA specifi cations will outperform an oil that meets the equivalent but older versions.

The current ACEA A3/B4 specifi es higher technical performance than A3/B4-04, particularly in soot handling, wear protection, sludge control and piston deposits (Figure 3). The same

performance criteria were tightened for the current ACEA C3 (Figure 4).

OEMs also update specifi cations, for example the major upgrade in requirements of the VW 501 01 specifi cation since 1999 (see Figure 5).

Choosing the right oil for a car has become complex. The ACEA* oil specifi cations, fi rst introduced in 1996, are agreed by all major car manufacturers. In addition to ACEA specifi cations it’s common for car manufacturers to set their own performance specifi cations that are unique to their engineering, emissions control and fuel economy technologies. To protect an engine, it is essential to use an oil that meets the specifi cation stated by the manufacturer!

synthetically produced 32.5% solution of pure urea in demineralized water.

Which cars require AdBlue®?AdBlue® treats exhaust gases in diesels equipped with Euro 6 SCR*

Why is AdBlue® necessary?Reducing pollutant emissions is a constant challenge for vehicle

manufacturers as EU standards continue to tighten. NOx emissions for

diesels have been more than halved from the Euro 5 regulations (180mg/

km) to Euro 6 requiring 80mg/km. The NOx emissions requirement for cars

stays at 60mg/km. Latest SCR catalytic converters convert up to 90% of

NOx into harmless steam and nitrogen using an injected urea solution -

AdBlue®, enabling a vehicle to meet the Euro 6 standard.

Re-fi lling the AdBlue® tankIf the AdBlue® tank runs dry it is not possible to start the engine. Vehicles

monitor the level in the tank, informing the driver well in advance if AdBlue®

has to be added.
