DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVERTelevision in Yorkshire is going digital!

The digital TV switchover is starting in South Yorkshire from August 2011. The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new stronger digital TV signal. The digital TV switchover is happening so the Freeview services (digital TV through an aerial) can be extended to people who can’t currently get them. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial.

Voluntary Action Sheffield can provide grants,

materials, free training, support and guidance during the run-up to

the digital TV switchover to organisations that support:

Teriyaki chicken and vegetable stir-fry

Take your taste buds to the Orient with a delicious stir-fry that’s quick and

easy to prepare.

serves 4each serving is:

2 Syns on Extra Easy

2 Syns on Original

8½ Syns on Green

ready in 15 minutes

3 x 150g skinless and boneless chicken breasts,

cut into thin strips

1 tbsp dark soy sauce

low calorie cooking spray

2 carrots, peeled and cut into matchsticks

1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into thin strips

100g mangetout, halved lengthways

100ml teriyaki sauce

1. Place the chicken in a glass bowl with the soy sauce and toss to

coatwell. 2. Spray a large non-stick wok or frying pan with low calorie cooking spray

and place over a high heat. Add the chicken mixture and stir-fry for 2-3

minutes. 3. Add the vegetables and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes.

4. Pour in the teriyaki sauce and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes or until piping hot

before serving. –

New research by the UK’s favourite slimming club Slimming World shows that more than half of people believe lack of time is the main reason for Britain’s obesity crisis. creating delicious, healthy meals doesn’t have to be time-consuming. “Nowadays people lead extremely busy lives, juggling long working hours, families, friends, housework and other commitments. With so much going on it’s easy to let something slip, and for lots of people that’s cooking healthy meals because they think it’s easier to pop a ready meal in the microwave or order a takeaway. ““In fact, cooking healthily doesn’t have to be a laborious task and in group we share lots of really simple and delicious recipes that you can have on the table in 30 minutes or less. Everything from family suppers to speedy snacks and even dinner party dishes – we have ideas for all occasions and best of all they’re all super-slimming and won’t cost the earth either.”Target member, Jane Froggatt, who has lost 2 stone 10lbs agrees: “The recipes are really easy to follow. They include dishes such as pasta

with creamy pesto, sticky 5-spice gammon and chick pea and chilli cakes, and they’ve all been created especially for healthy appetites. Wales Art Group and the Sew-n-Sew’s craft group are holding their Annual Exhibition of their works on Saturday 9th July (10:00-5:00) and Sunday 10th July (10:00-4:00), 2011 at Kiveton Park and Wales Village Hall.There will be plenty of original art work and sewing craftwork on display and most will be for sale at very reasonable prices. Wales Art Group was formed in 2003 by a group of friends who enjoyed painting and drawing. They thought it would be a good idea to meet once a week, work together, help each other and talk about their pictures. It has remained

our intention to promote art as a hobby and to encourage each other, regardless of ability, with whatever media is used. We are proud, today, to show you some of our work. We welcome new members who wish to join our warm, friendly group.

WALESWOOD SPORTS CRICKET CLUB The season is in full swing and 2011 will be very busy and we hope an exciting time at Waleswood. Once again the club is moving forward in its aims of providing excellent facilities and affordable cricket to all. Along with our

long term plan of promoting junior cricket.The facilities at Waleswood have already been improved when a team of willing helpers redecorated the club house and the furniture in the club room was updated, making it an attractive option for anyone looking to hold a

function for around 50 people. Mothers UnionThink you know about Mothers Union? Think again. To be a member, you have to be a married mother yes? No! You don’t have to be married, a mother, or even a woman. You have to be over 60 yes? No, just over 18 but some events are visited by those even younger. At a meeting you just sit drinking cups of tea, knitting yes? No, every meeting there’s something different to experience. It might be a speaker from a local charity or someone with an interesting hobby to share. It could be a craft evening where experts encourage us to learn a new skill. It may be a visit to a place of interest or perhaps a social evening. But, on offer will be a warm welcome, a cup of tea or coffee and a fun filled evening! So why have these meetings? The Mothers Union website

By supporting marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity, we tackle the most urgent needs challenging relationships and communities.’Our branch is the ‘Wales and Kiveton Park branch’ which is affiliated to St. John’s Church, Wales. We try to choose a variety of speakers to reflect MU aims, so that we are aware of what help is needed and we can do. Along side that, we also help local and national/international charities by collecting items such as candle wax, bedding, clothing, toiletries etc all of which have been requested by charities. Our branch meet the 2nd Monday of every month (except August) in St John’s Rooms, Wales Road, 7:30pm. During the last year, our evenings have included; a speaker from NSPCC; a visit to the Sue Walker Centre; a Christmas Craft night and Tony Atkin from ‘Helping Dogs’. John Foster (an MU member’s husband) joined us at our last meeting to display his knowledge

about beekeeping. We even got to taste a variety of the honey; a great evening was had by all. Future events include a speaker telling us about his job within the emergency services, a visit and a ‘sparkling cream tea’. So did you know about Mothers Union after all? New Area Dean of LaughtonThe Reverend Gary Schofield Vicar of Wales and Priest in Charge of Harthill with Woodall and Thorpe Salvin has been licensed as the Area of Dean of Laughton. An Area Dean is appointed by the Bishop of Sheffield after consultation with all the Clergy in the Deanery and the Deanery Lay Chair. The Area Dean is expected to work closely with the Archdeacon and to be familiar with the life and work of the parishes in the Deanery which stretches from South Anston to Maltby and Firbeck. The Area Dean has the following responsibilities. To care for the Deanery Clergy and their families, to oversee the efficient running of parishes during vacancies and to coordinate the induction of, a new incumbent. Reverend Schofield can be seen at his licensing with The Venerable Martyn Snow, Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham at the Deanery Synod held at St James South Anston on Monday 9th May. The Deanery Synod debates matters of importance to the Diocese Deanery and parishes. Reverend Schofield said, “I am very much looking forward to my new role. The Bishop of Sheffield is encouraging all the churches in the deanery to focus on mission and church growth. It promises to be an exciting and challenging time for us all.”

WALES MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANYArticle: By Brenda BradleyA meeting was held on Tuesday 10th May to discuss this year’s production of the now “Wales Musical Theatre Company” ( formerly know as Showstoppers) Our membership goes from strength to strength and we now have over 60 performers taking part in our productions. Last year’s show was a huge success with all performances sold out. This year’s show will contain music from an array of musicals including Oklahoma, Carousel, The Rocky Horror Show, Fiddler on the Roof, Bugsy Malone, Sweet Charity and many others, and after listening to some of the music on the rehearsal CD all I can say is Wow! Tickets have already gone on sale, so anyone interested in joining us for what promises to be another fantastic show, can get tickets by ringing Jayne Lemm on 01909 515389The dates and times of the show are: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th September Commencing at 7:15pm. Kiveton & Wales Pre-School Daycare will once again be taking part in the UK’s biggest charity event for children under 5. “ The Barnardo’s Big Toddle”

This event brings together families and friends to help raise money for the vulnerable, abused, forgotten and neglected children that Barnardo’s work so hard to help each year, the event will also raise much needed funds for our own school.

The toddle will take place this year on Saturday, 25th June at 11am on the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Woodland at the entrance adjacent to the Old Colliery Offices, with all children doing the toddle receiving a medal and certificate when finished.

KIVETON PARK MEADOWS

JUNIOR SCHOOLThe children at Kiveton Park Meadows Junior School decided to hold their own Royal Wedding to celebrate the marriage of William and Catherine.

Children played all the roles including the happy couple, proud parents of both families, best man, bridesmaids, reporters and even the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of Westminster and the Dean of London.

The ceremony was held in the school hall and attended by the rest of the children, all dressed up for the wedding. After the official photos everyone was treated to a piece of celebratory wedding cake and a drink to toast the bride and groom. A great afternoon was had by all.

A team of radio presenters from Redroad FM in January raised £400 for charity. In December 2010 we held a photo shoot at the Old Colliery Offices, Kiveton Park and radio presenters from the station took part in some interesting and memorable photographs! Each photograph represented a fun way to enjoy each month of the year. The radio presenters then ran auctions during their shows and local businesses were able to bid for the remaining pages in the Redroad FM 2011 Calendar. The funds raised went towards paying for the cost of the production of the calendars.

The presenters then turned into salespeople, enabling us to raise £400 from the sale of the calendars Our Lunchtime Live presenter ‘Gaz Shanks’ asked Redroad FM listeners to pick a charity of their choice, who they felt would make best use of the funds raised. After much debate, two listeners provided testimonies about how they had been supported by two separate organisations who work wonders in our local

communities. The fundraising event concluded with listeners voting to split the funds raised between the two organisation’s which are Yorkshire Air Ambulance an ‘independent charity, who provide a life saving rapid response emergency service to 5 million people across Yorkshire’ and P A C T Sheffield Childrens Hospital a charity set up by a group of parents to help children with cancer by providing invaluable and on going support for parents and their children.

REDROAD RADIO 102.4 FM

Lunchtime Live presenters Gaz Shanks and Phil the Beerman presented Mark Perry, South Yorkshire Development Officer (Yorkshire Air Ambulance) with a cheque for £200Megan Armitage, Lucas Sutheren and Beryl Welburn, P A C T Coordinator received a cheque for £200 at the Sheffield Childrens Hospital. A Redroad FM director said: “It was a good fundraising event which was well supported by our local community. I’m really pleased that we can use the station to raise and donate funds to worthy causes.”Redroad FM plans to host a series of other charity events during the year to raise more funds for the charities.

Extra activities are planned during the school holidays which will appeal to older siblings.We are currently planning for the summer holidays. Activities will include a trip to Cleethorpes, swimming, teddy bears picnic at Rother Valley Country Park, messy play sessions and a visit to Clifton Park. Hi Folks, up dating you on Wales Chapel. The Arts and Family services are held, usually two or three times a month at 3:00pm. Check our Notice Board for dates and activities. The next services held at Wales are on the 5th & 26th June, 10th July and the 7th & 28th August. We’re singing some of the new hymns which go down well, both with the older and younger members of the congregation and new members are always welcomed. Come and join us and, watch this space! Our pantomime next year is Goldilocks & the Three Bears to be held at the Montgomery Hall Surrey Street, Sheffield. As yet no performance dates have been fixed but we will notify you as soon as we know.

ChesterfieldCanal TrustThe Chesterfield Canal Trust is one of six projects to have been selected for the Jubilee People’s Millions in the ITV Calendar Region. This is a competition in which short films are shown each night about two projects. The public then vote for the one they support. The project that gets more votes each night is awarded the money.

Our project is for an electric powered boat which will be fully accessible for the disabled, with an electro-hydraulic system to enable any user to steer the boat from anywhere within it, regardless of disability. It will be based at Kiveton Park. It is supported by Wales High School and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.Some of the aims of the first year of the project are

To provide access to the Chesterfield Canal for 200 people with mobility impairments

To run a RYA or NCBA Helmspersons Certificate

course for 10 adult volunteers from the local community

To run a RYA or NCBA Helmspersons Certificate course for 20 young people from Wales High School

To develop with Wales High School a pupil engagement enterprise programme based around the business of running it as a trip boat.

Our film will be broadcast by ITV in Calendar at 6 p.m. on Monday 27th June. If we get more votes than the other project that day, we will be awarded the money.

Voting is only by phone. The number will be released on the day of transmission – Monday, 27th June. The phone number will appear in the Daily Mirror, on the Jubilee People’s Millions website www.peoplesmillions.org.uk and on the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s website www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk .

We are a friendly needlework group who have been meeting on Monday night’s for the last 7½ years! You’ll find us in the KP&W Village Hall at 7.30pm. We have varied interests and normally work on our own pieces, ranging from knitting, patchwork, cross-stitch, tapestry, embroidery, crochet, tatting, hardanger work - the list goes on and on..... and every now and then we work on a group project. There is a nominal charge of £2.00 per week to cover room-hire and refreshments – you only pay for the weeks you come. (We do not meet on Bank Holiday Mondays and occasionally have missed due to unforeseen circumstances – but I would let you know in advance)New members are always welcome – just dig out one of those un-started/finished projects and come along and join in one Monday evening. soon......Clara Here we are on a visit to the Bluebell Wood Hospice, prior to its opening, handing in a selection of book bags we made for the children to use during their stay there. Handing over a selection of knitted blankets and a ‘piece as you go’ quilt to Bluebell Wood volunteer. Some members with a selection of bonnets, cardigans and incubator blankets we have knit for Wye Needlecrafts campaign for premature baby units in local hospitals. Also many scarves, hats and mittens have been knitted for the Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

KIVETON PARK & WALES SCOUTS GROUP

As most people know, 11th Rotherham Scout Group Headquarters stands behind St John’s Rooms in Kiveton. Since the present building was erected in 1979 over 600 local young people, aged between 5 and 18 have benefitted from the wide variety of activities on offer, including camp cooking and First Aid, wide games and preparations for adventurous expeditions on foot and by canoe. Numerous Scout badges and awards plus Duke of

Edinburgh awards have resulted from the hard work of the children and young people and the volunteer Scout leaders who work with them week after week (as well as very welcome hours of respite for many busy mums and dads!) After 40 years of service, the ‘Scout Hut’ is becoming tired. Despite years of tender care and renovations, it is time to replace the present structure with something that can continue to support even more local children to experience the adventure, team work and personal development that Scouting offers.The ‘New Building’ group has begun the long process of investigating possibilities such as the types of buildings available, costs, architects, discussions with other community groups and RMBC’s planning department. It is hoped that even in the planning stages, other student groups can be brought in to practise their developing skills in architecture and construction trades.

Fund raising has started with a kind donation from the BT Community Champions project. Although this is a financially difficult time for everyone, the members of 11th Rotherham Scout Group would very much welcome your support, whether that is by offering time and expertise, or helping in whatever little way you can with the enormous fund-raising task ahead. Many adults in the village, and sons and daughters of the village, have first hand experience of the fun of scouting – you know who you are and we still have the photographs! Please help us to continue to nurture and grow scouting in Wales and Kiveton Park. Watch out around the village and in newsletters for details of activities and events which will begin to be published shortly.

The recent warm, dry spell of

weather has impacted on the woodland in contrasting ways; the

w i l d f l o w e r s and insects

that feed on them have taken full

advantage of the extended spring sunshine to put in an early show and start their reproduction cycles a little earlier in the year than usual, while some of the ponds are drying up much too quickly and the tadpoles and other juvenile invertebrates that live in them are fighting for their very survival. Such is the way of the world and such has it been for many millennia!

The public reaction to events being run on Kiveton Community Woodland has also been similarly contrasting; the Nordic Walking sessions continue to be well supported and the numbers attending the Easter Eggstravaganza event were exceptionally good.

However, the Dawn Chorus guided walk was undersubscribed and had to be cancelled. With a recent spurt in the number of babies being born in Kiveton, a Buggy fit taster session will be run on Thursday 2nd June to gauge whether or not there is a demand for a weekly Buggy fit class on the woodland

A couple of other dates for your diary…….Sunday 17th July is the third Kiveton Park Brass Band Festival. On Saturday 6th August the woodland hosts the second Kiveton Urban Festival which is being organised and run by JADE, a Kiveton based social enterprise group that aims to provide positive opportunities for young people through the medium of music and performance. The event will include a dance stage featuring musical styles such as hardstyle, trance, drum n’ bass and dubstep, and a live band stage where local bands will perform throughout the day. There will also be a graffiti display, a live dance show by Discreet, bouncy castles, fairground rides and refreshment stands. Please come along and support both events.

Born in 1938 I was brought up at No. 15 Red Hill, Kiveton Park and on leaving school in 1953 was apprenticed to Harry Smith who ran a building business at his premises on Station Road. Harry started out as a wheelwright but moved on to general building work in later life. Harry, did many jobs for local people and also did maintenance work at the Regal Cinema.I remember on our numerous visits to the cinema calling at either Fittons (now the dentists), or Grahams, opposite the Regal, who both made their own ice cream and sold sweets, which we took to the show.On each Saturday morning shows were put on for the kids. You would purchase your ticket, all of which had a number, and a draw, organised by Ethel Goddard, was held at the interval. If you had the lucky number, you might win a box of chocolates or two free seats for the next week’s performance. If it was your birthday you also got a prize.It was Harry Smith who was asked to fit a canopy over the front of the Regal and render the frontage, in an effort to try and attract bigger audiences as trade began to dwindle, due to the arrival of television.He did, however, have a foot in both camps, as our Saturday morning job was to go around the village erecting television aerials in addition to the other type of work he undertook.

In the roof of the cinema were three big light shades, which had to be uncoupled in order to change the light bulbs when they had fused. This took up an entire morning. The lights had to be cranked down and back up again on a winch. I would stand on a gantry up above the ceiling to perform the task.I remember once we were working near the stage and suddenly this figure emerged from behind the curtains. Quite unnerving! We wondered where the apparition had come from.There was a fire proof box made out of concrete which housed the projectors, ‘Charlie’ used to operate it and frightened the living daylights out of us when he emerged from the screen area behind the curtains.There was also a side door, which led to the boiler house from where the coke fired heating was run to radiators situated down each side of the cinema. These were painted in gold.The walls of the theatre were finished with “Artex”. When the brickwork got damp the “Artex ” would blow up like a balloon and have to be scraped away and replaced with new plaster.Seats which had become loose, usually from mistreatment, had to be bolted back down. We did, however find, as a bonus, that if you ran a ruler under the seats iron legs we might pick up the odd 2/-d or even 2/6d lodged under there.The cinema was closed for a week at one point because it was considered a fire risk. The Water Board devised a plan to counteract this hazard. A hole was drilled in the water main then a pipe and valve attached. They were then supplied with a new hose reel which when coupled to the new pipe easily ran the length of the cinema, even extending to the outside.

Although there was never a fire, the long hose was very useful for cleaning the front of the cinema.The Fire Service was then called in to approve the new sprinkler system, which they passed with flying colours.I remember that one Saturday night the queue was waiting outside ready to go in to the second house when Harry turned up with a crow bar and proceeded to lift the manhole cover adjacent to the fascinated onlookers and produced a set of false teeth. Someone in the first house had been sick and lost their teeth down the toilet!Once the cinema was overrun with mice. Traps were set upstairs and baited with chocolate. Even before we left the cinema we could hear the traps going off one by one. People eating chocolate and crisps had caused the problem, some viewers even took in bags of chips.In 1958, We were called in when “Cinemascope” was to be installed in the Regal. Our job was to make ready for the new screen going in which was narrower, all be it three times bigger than the existing one. The front of the old screen had to be taken off first and the area then had to be widened in order for the new screen to be fitted. Contractors were then brought in to fit “Cinemascope”.We then painted the walls “Daffodil Yellow”I remember whenever we had to work up in the loft we were always covered in a bright yellow dust, which was due to the nicotine from the cigarette smokers in the days when smoking was allowed during the film.

Derek Newbold relates the two following stories:I used to go to the Saturday morning ‘rush’. The film this particular Saturday was Singing the Blues. At the interval I was surprised to find that my ticket had the winning number and at the end of the show I proudly collected my prize which was a 78-rpm recording of Tommy Steele singing ‘Singing the Blues’. Never having won a prize before I was absolutely delighted with the record.The following week off I went again to the pictures and low and behold my number came out again. I went to pick up my prize and it was another 78rpm record, this time with Guy Mitchell singing his version of the same song ‘Singing the Blues’. I loved both records equally both very big recording artistes at that time, the 1950’s.

Another time, at one of the evening performances a film named The Garden of Eden was showing and had obviously been advertised as having scenes of nudity and was an A or even X rating. “Adults only”. My elder brother Terry and his pals were going to see this film which was apparently the talk of the village. I asked him to get me in with them. He was hesitant at first but after a bit of persuading he condescended. The film turned out to be a documentary of sorts with top nudity only. From the waist down, frontal, you never saw a thing. The picture house was packed to capacity – with men! I found it all a bit of a bore and couldn’t wait to get next door where ‘Kiveton Feast’ was set up on the “Recca” with all the rides, stalls, dodgems etc. A little story about ‘all in the mind’ I guess.

George Barker Senior was born in Harthill. As a young man he worked as a farm labourer and in the local colliery at KivetonPark.

As work gradually paid lower wages he decided to chance his luck and emigrated to Canada. Unfortunately this did not prove successful and he returned after a period, took the Queen’s shilling, and joined the Royal Marines.

He saw service in the Boer War then returned to England and married Elizabeth Sidders in Deal, Kent. He was posted to the Marine Barracks at Gosport.

To my knowledge they had five children, Maude, George junior, May, Joe and Norah.He was invalided out of the marines with rheumatic arthritis having served for over 22 years and received the Good Conduct Medal.

He then returned to the Kiveton Park area and worked at the local colliery, sadly passing away in December 1924 aged 76.His widow, Elizabeth, passed away in 1950 aged 90 after being confined to a wheelchair fora long time.
