Hello Members;
It’s such a strange year! We will be holding a Chapter Leadership meeting on Zoom on August 29, 2020. Sign up on the website. We will have a main meeting, then do breakout rooms for Chapter Chairs, treasurers, membership, etc.
As far as the fall Membership meeting on October 17, 2020, we are still in the “wait and see” what happens with COVID-19 mode. If I had to guess, I’m not sure this will happen. I’m considering a business meeting on Zoom in November, if we still can’t get together in October.
I miss seeing everyone in person. I’m a hugger and this isolation has not been good for me. I miss hugs!! I’ve been getting projects done in my home (my cork design wall is finally finished after 2 years of working on this project). I adopted another cat, so now I have 2 cats. Luckily, they get along great.
I want to give a big thanks to our restructure committee. Charyl Garman, Debbie Ament, Eva Kilgore, Sherri Ashford, and Nancy Parlova. They have finished with rewriting the bylaws and have submitted it to the Board of Directors for review. We hope to have them out to the membership in a few weeks for you to look over.
Stay safe, hope we will be able to meet again soon!
Nancy

Sunrise Stitchers of Scottsdale submitted by Nancy Cisar
During the past 4 months when we all have been quarantined, our guild has continued to be creative and stay in touch once a month with a virtual meeting sharing by email. We have been able to hear from our Canadian members, those in places like Germany, Montana, South Dakota and those in camping areas. We have not tried ZOOM but that may be the next trial!! We really miss not seeing and talking to each other but at least we share what projects we have been working on. We have been continuing with our BOM.
In June we each shared our favorite quilting online resources. Now we each have a great list of ideas! July we shared “My Quilting Story” how we got started in quilting, what or who inspired us to quilt, our first quilt, & what you most enjoy about quilting.
Our members have looked forward to the
monthly meeting and have been able to keep in touch no matter where they are. It has been a great trip.

Nimble Thimbles of Chandler submitted by Penny Boese
Zoom is keeping Nimble Thimbles connected, and we are so grateful we have this tool that allows
us to continue meeting, seeing everyone’s beautiful faces, and sharing our experiences. On June 16, our
last meeting of the 2019-2020 year, we handed off our President’s Quilt to Jo Setliff. Jo served as
president of our chapter for two years. Jo also wears the hat of master gardener, so we gave her our
rendition of a Boojum Tree. Members pieced the colorful tree spikes, Kathy O’Brien put everything
together, Pat Glenn made our label, and Penny Boese did the quilting. Thank you, Jo. We really appreciate
your leadership over the past two years!
Since our last meeting of the year is always a social event, usually with ice cream and fixings, we
decided to play Scavenger Hunt by Zoom on June 16. Everyone had 20 seconds per item to return with the
hunted items and the top six winners received prizes dropped at their door. We searched for everything
from blue fabric to a teaspoon. Lots of laughter!
On July 7, we held our PUPs program and welcomed our new Board, headed by President Debbie
Ament. We appreciate all of our new Board members, willing to step in and take on roles during this crazy
Covid-19 time. Debbie presented her President’s Challenge, asking members to do something new related
to quilting. Anything new, she said. You can try a new fabric, shop at a new quilt store, quilt with a new
friend, try a new technique or pattern. Debbie will keep track of what we try or do new and will draw for
prizes at the end of our year.
Kathy Krieg led us through our PUPs (poor unfinished projects), first showing off the projects
people completed over the 2019-2020 year. From those completed, we drew names. This year, Debbie
Ament, Leslie Schneider and Heather Domarad won gift cards.
www.azquiltersguild.org August 2020—The Patchwork Chatter 7
Nimble Thimbles (cont.)
Then it was time to choose projects for this year. Everyone who participated presented three
projects, explaining the finished size, how much of their PUP they had completed, and any other pertinent
information. Then membership voted, and with that vote, the member knew what PUP they had to
complete for 2020-2021. We always tell members, be careful what you present, because the more
challenging is often what membership chooses for you.

Kingman Quilters of Kingman submitted by Sally Bradley
Now that we are back and meeting again we are continuing our education. In May, Deb H. taught us how to make a crocheted beaded rope bracelet. It was difficult for me, but others seemed to be more adept at the manipulation needed for the process. In June, Camille and Deb H. taught 2 methods of stained glass quilt design methods. One using 1/4" bias tape and the other by piecing.
Quail Country Quilters of Cottonwood submitted by Bev Lawrence
Quail Country Quilters does not meet during the month of July. During April and May, We had 3 Zoom
meetings through which we conducted our business, and had elections, and shared how and what we
were doing thru the isolation. In June we were able to resume our regular meeting schedule with limited
attendance and practicing the required social distancing. It was nice to be able to have show and tell
again, and there were a number of nice projects shared.

Paradise Valley Piecers of Phoenix Submitted by Melissa Turner
Paradise Valley Piecers meet every other week at a parking lot meeting. We wear our masks and do social distancing. We show and tell and enjoy each others company. Jan Taylor has always sent out an email to the membership of what we show at our meetings. She continues to do that.

Cholla Quilters of Mesa submitted by Carol Kraay, President
During this time of being “safer at home”, we started a private Facebook group for Cholla Quilters. This has provided a format for our members to stay connected and continue to share ideas, projects, and photos. We have continued some of our planned activities such as Block of the Month, and demonstrations, by sharing files and photographs in our Facebook group. A ”Question of the Week” is posted every Monday. (Ex: Besides your sewing machine, what’s the coolest thing in your sewing room? What’s your favorite vacation spot?). This has been a fun way for members to interact with each other.
In June, we held several events on Zoom. Members submitted photos of their projects for a virtual Show & Tell presentation. Everyone had a turn to “Tell” as their photos were “Shown” on the screen. At another Zoom session one of our members, Patti Kupferer, shared a fabulous presentation on making “little houses” with Freezer Paper Paper Piecing.
We are planning to continue with virtual meetings until it is safe for everyone to meet again in-person. In September we plan to show Rhonda Dort’s presentation, “Quilting with Vintage Linens”, which she graciously offered to share for free with quilt guilds.
In the photo, Patti Kupferer’s demonstration is on Zoom. One shows the view from Patti’s side of the screen as the presenter. The photo from Diane Belliveau shows the participants side of the screen. The photo from Carol Kraay shows some of the “little houses” made with fabric from mask making.)
www.azquiltersguild.org August 2020—The Patchwork Chatter 11
Cholla Quilters of Mesa continued
Cholla members have continued to make face masks for family, friends and community members. Members donated fabric, and a sewing machine, to the Navajo Outreach Airlift.
“The fabric you sent us has been a tremendous blessing. The sewing machine is used daily. Yesterday we finished making over 300 masks. Thoreau Navajo Outreach advertises the weekly free mask distribution over the central radio station. We have had an amazing response. We hand out masks and hand sanitizer. We are just about to run out of the fabric you sent. We are confident that God will provide more fabric. God has blessed this cause I many ways.” From a letter we received from the Navajo Outreach.
Pam Shields’ photos show two women, and two young boys working on the Navaho mask making project. The photo from Carol Kraay shows a collection of masks Cholla members made to send to another Navajo mission.
Sundown Quilters of Glendale submitted by Katie Huxford
Well here we are 5 months into the novel coronavirus and the Sundown Chapter members have managed to keep in touch on a regular basis. It’s been too hot of course to try to get together in an outside setting like a park, where we could visit from a safe distance and catch up, so we’re seeing each other via Zoom meetings. Our new set of planning committee volunteers assumed their positions at the July 23rd meeting. Karen Thew is our new chapter chair. We thank our outgoing chapter chair Candy Tashiro for her 5 years of service as our fearless leader.
www.azquiltersguild.org August 2020—The Patchwork Chatter 12
Sundown Quilters continued
We had 14 members participate in our online July meeting. Denise is leading our 2020 Mystery Quilt and
many of our members are feverishly working to keep up with the monthly clues.
We are still doing our Block of the Month blocks and saving them for the next time we can meet in person
and have our drawings for the BOM blocks. Karen H did a little program with Zoom hints and tips for those
members new to the platform. Rhonda did a demo of the August BOM.
Our program for the August meeting is a challenge to each member to “come” to the meeting and be
prepared to show their favorite quilting ruler and give a brief discussion of its’ purpose.
In addition to our monthly planning committee meeting and membership meeting, we are also having a
monthly “Sit and Sew” social sewing Zoom meeting the first Saturday of the month for a few hours.
Members can come and go as they please—pop in from their sewing room and sit and sew and visit for a
few hours or just come into the meeting briefly and say hi. It’s been lots of fun and less formal than our
official monthly meetings. We recommend other chapters give this a try.

Cactus Patchers of Tempe submitted by Annette Gelfi
The Cactus Patchers remain active with monthly meetings (2nd Tuesday of the month at 6.30pm) now being held remotely via Zoom, since the Pyle Adult Recreation Center is unavailable for in-person gatherings until at least September. A full program is planned for the year and there is a lot to stay tuned in for. Please reach out to the guild’s Board members if you are unfamiliar with how to access the Zoom meetings. The July 14th meeting featured a wonderful trunk show by Patti Pearce showcasing a variety of art quilting and decorative techniques skillfully used to great effect in Patti’s work. If you missed the trunk show a link to a video of Patti’s presentation was emailed to members. Several members shared their finished quilts, including Nancy Parlova’s fire truck quilt and Margo Brindley’s “Radiant Suns”. Laura May shared a very special and highly innovative quilt made by her brother using flannel, duct tape and zip ties. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic the guild met on the 4th Tuesday of the month for a social sew-in and fellowship. We would like to keep this going, albeit in a socially-distanced online (Zoom meeting) format. The first of these “Cactus Connections” informal friendship sewing sessions took place on July 28. Links to future “Cactus Connections” will be shared via the guild’s Google Group – please contact a Board member if you need to be added to this group. The next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday August 11th at 6.30pm. A link to the Zoom meeting will be emailed to members. Here is a selection of quilts recently completed by members:

Willene Smith 1933 – 2020
It is with deep regret we share the passing of Willene Smith on June 23, 2020. Willene, a resident of Strawberry and Phoenix, was a lifelong Arizonan. She was active in the Arizona Quilters Guild since its inception in the late 1970’s and involved with the early editions of the Patchwork Chatter, the newsletter of the Arizona Quilters Guild. She served as hospitality chair in 1984 and then was elected President of AQG in 1986. Willene organized and chaired two chapters of AQG, the Strawberry Patchers in 1994 and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Quilt Angels in 2007. Many will remember her as the Volunteer Coordinator and smiling greeter during the time the AQG Quilt Show was held at ASU West. Willene became a Board Member of the founding board of the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame in 2007. She provided invaluable knowledge of Arizona quilting, past and present and assisted in the induction of the classes of 2008 and 2009. After retiring from the Board, Willene was inducted into the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame, class of 2012. She is probably best known for her contributions to community service projects. She was tireless when it came to helping others. She turned a 1990 AQG Community Service Project into a group that delivered more than 7,200 quilts to Department of Public Safety Officers for them to keep in their vehicles and distribute to accident victims or children that are removed from dangerous situations. In 2007 Willene received the Medal of Valor from the Department of Public Safety for her devotion to the DPS Quilt Project. This commendation is usually reserved for officers for efforts above and beyond the call of duty and is rarely awarded to civilians. It is important to note that while Willene made so many contributions to quilting in Arizona, she and her late husband Walt also spent many years in service to their communities – first in Phoenix and then in Pine/Strawberry. It is more proof that volunteerism and responsibility are deeply rooted in the person that Willene was. In memory of Willene, for those who wish to make a contribution in lieu of flowers, the family has chosen Hospice of the Valley.

Dear Aunt Quiltie - Advice Column
Caring for your self-healing mat:
If you’re like me, your self-healing mat gets used quite a bit, so here is an easy home
remedy to make your self-healing mat last much longer.
Directions: Fill you bathtub with room temperature water (not hot, not warm, and not cold).
In the water add 1/4 cup of white vinegar and a squirt of dove dish soap for a good lather.
Use a mushroom brush (soft bristle brush) and scrub the mat gently getting a good lather
with the soap. Then rinse off your self-healing mat with cool water getting all residue off the
mat. You can dry it with a cotton towel, or air dry. It does not matter how you choose to dry it.
(Do not dry it in direct sunlight or it could damage the mat).
The reason for this method is the materials that make your self-healing mat, absorb the
water and make the mat supple again. Not only does this make your mat last longer,
but it keep your blades from dulling so quickly because you are cutting into a softer
surface. Makes sense, right??
Sincerely, Aunt Quiltie
