P A G E T H R E E P I CPlayed is spins based. Still, the comparison is striking. Florida Georgia Line were the 2013 top performing act in terms of current airplay, with Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan and The Band Perry rounding

out the top five. But including all airplay benefits artists with a deep catalog of hits. Thus, Jason Aldean tops the Most Played ranking, followed by Shelton, McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Bryan. Zac Brown Band (No. 6) is the top ranked band, Carrie Underwood (No. 9) is the top female artist, and

FGL post impressively at No. 11 despite having no prior catalog on which to lean. Here’s the rest of the top 20, as compiled by Mediabase:

Artist Spins1. Jason Aldean 619,4462. Blake Shelton 613,8263. Tim McGraw 609,3764. Kenny Chesney 588,7625. Luke Bryan 555,1386. Zac Brown Band 515,2307. Keith Urban 500,2688. Brad Paisley 483,1349. Happy Days: Alabama’s Randy Owen and then-WMZQ/Washington staffer Jon Anthony share a backstage moment at a time and place lost to history. Have your own trade pics fully divorced from their original press releases? Send them to us at [email protected].

Err Check: Brett Eldredge, who made the 2012 Top New Artists list, was inadvertently left off of the 2013 list in our December print issue. He was the year’s top new artist. Also, Parmalee and Eric Paslay should have been noted as Top 15 First Timers. We regret the errors.

OFF THE RECORD: LInDsAy ELL

Lindsay EllFGL

Page 6January 6, 2014

Stoney Creek’s Lindsay Ell gives an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to Country 105 in Calgary, Canada. I would yell at anybody who would turn the station on the car radio. The Odd Squad was the morning show and I loved listening to them on the way to school. The first time I heard myself on the radio we were in Phoenix listening to

KMLE, I was sitting in the front seat of a cab and we had the driver pull over. I was giving him a high five and he was very happy, too. He asked for my autograph, but I think he was happiest the meter was running. The scariest part of my radio tour has been that our bus is kind of haunted. Sometimes it has a mind of its own. The lights will go on and off by themselves, and the doors will open and close. But all of a sudden it’s gotten back to normal and thankfully it’s not doing as many random things, so let’s not jinx it. I cannot walk out of a truck stop without my weakness, Reese’s Pieces. I want to show that girls can play guitar solos, too. [VP/Promotion] Chris Loss always describes me as a female Canadian Keith Urban. I’m writing the record that I’ve wanted to write ever since I started playing music. The first single, “Trippin’ On Us,” is the perfect mix between country and rock, and shows I can play a little guitar. I’ve never bought anything from Skymall, but I always look at it when I’m on the plane and I take pictures of the crazy things that are in it. The funniest was a bed bug sleeping bag that would zip up and I guess protect you from bed bugs. I’ve never played Candy Crush but if I was to play it I’d probably only make it to level two or three. I’m definitely more talented at playing guitar than I am at games. If I had to be stuck in any city other than home, it would either be Chicago, Orlando or Scottsdale. Chicago just fascinates me and I love the architecture, the amazing music, the culture and the people. And in Orlando or Scottsdale I feel like you’re on constant vacation. When you look at blue sky and palm trees, how can you not be happy?

Blaster Records Dir./National Promotion Bob Reeves discusses his most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums:1. Blood Sweat & Tears, Blood Sweat & Tears: This was the first LP I bought with my very own money. Funny thing is that Al Kooper, a founding member of BS&T, became a friend in my early years here in Nashville and brought to my attention that a mutual friend of ours was the woman for me. That woman, Vickie,

has been my wife for over 18 years now.2. David Bowie, The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust... held in the highest esteem from my early teens ‘til now ... so much of my music appreciation and fandom stems from my love for this record. We even share a birthday!3. Randy Travis, Live at the Altamont Fairgrounds, mid-’80s: I was PD at WPTR/Albany. Randy was the headliner and the infamous converted bread delivery truck he once used as a “tour bus” broke down for good on the way. He was hours late, but local superstar/smash songwriter Billy Montana played until he got there. Travis played a killer set and stayed to sign autographs well into the night.4. Todd Rundgren and/or The Ramones: I’ve seen these two acts in concert well over a 100 times between them! The Ramones were a study in how to run a live tour like a machine. Todd’s so incredibly diverse, you never know if you’ll see him solo or with a band, playing rock, soul, salsa, blues or pop. 5. Virtually every act I’ve ever worked: I’ve found lasting friendships and more respect than you can imagine working with all those talented people. I count myself lucky to continue...• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Jazz. Light or cool jazz bores me. The deeper stuff just sounds like five guys playing a different song at the same time.•An album you played or listened to incessantly: Frank Turner, England Keep My Bones. Frank is an English punk folk singer and this album gets more spins on my stereo than any other record in a long time.•One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Eminem. Although rap is not my thing, I really do find him and Dr. Dre to be incredibly talented and interesting.

Bob Reeves

And I wish for the labels to only send records that take no time to build familiarity and test through the roof! And that they sell a ton. Capitol Dir./Northeast Promotion Diane Lockner: My radio wish is that its revenue builds and builds, and that music decision-makers won’t feel beholden to the PPM. For records, I wish for Bruce Springsteen to sign with Capitol Nashville, and that he and I get to do lots of radio visits all over the Northeast. No, seriously, my wish is that we have an industry 10 years from now! WIVK/Knoxville OM/PD Bob Raleigh: I wish for radio to remember that it’s still show business. We always remember the “business” part, but sometimes forget the “show.”

My records wish is the same wish I’ve had for 20 years − stop running songs up and off the charts. Let them simmer and

get familiar. Keep them on longer and don’t take them off as soon as they hit No. 1. Republic Nashville Dir./West Promotion Lois Lewis White:

I’d love a magical elf, gnome or leprechaun who would complete my expenses for me as I go, and a Southwest Airlines flight into Bakersfield and Fresno − soon. Enough said. But seriously, I’d like to see more creativity across the board; from radio, records and artists. I’d really like to see listeners involved more. Let them in early ... they’ll be grateful forever. I have the benefit of coming from radio and working directly with the artists [and wish to be] a tool to help make your promotion an even bigger win. That’s what I’m here for – not just to shuffle compliance paperwork and wear my very uncomfortable and itchy spin-police outfit. JVC Media VP/Programming Phathead: I wish for radio get some balls and give serious daytime spins and exposure to new artists the way we do here. The audience demands it, and it’s available at their fingertips on every device they own. It’s time for radio to catch up to the listeners. My greatest wish for the record

Pop Star: Curb’s Lee Brice delivers a surprise concert in the tiny town of Milligan, NE Saturday (1/4) as part Pepsi’s “Get Hyped For Halftime” promotion aimed at drumming up excitement for the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. “Social media started blowing up Friday about Pepsi dropping off 75 pop machines set to dispense free soda,” says KZKX/Lincoln’s Rob Kelley. “There was a promise of a major music star performing in concert and shooting a Pepsi halftime commercial for the Superbowl in the coming 24 hours, but no one knew who.” Pepsi says the campaign will continue in more unexpected places between now and game day. Pictured (inset, l-r) are ‘ZKX’s Ally Morgan and Rob Kelley, Brice, and the station’s Andrea Norris and JP. The significance of Millgan? It’s the geographic halfway point of America, of course.

industry is to stop telling radio that a song is so “young” and has “so much more life left” when a superstar flies up the charts to No. 1. As Country becomes more like the pop format, songs are going to fly up and come down. You can’t have it both ways. Curb Dir./National Promotion Mike Rogers: My wish for radio is that the door will open for more opportunity for female artists. You can see it start turning that way now, we just need that door to open a little wider. For records, I’d love to have a budget for a personal masseuse for all the cramped plane seats I’ve wedged myself in to this year,

along with all the long car rides between markets. People don’t realize what a toll the road can put on a promotion person’s body! If I can’t get one of those, then I guess my wish is to sell more music this year so we can afford one next year. WLHK/Indianapolis OM/PD Bob Richards: My radio wish is that Nielsen Audio would work with

the NSA on improving PPM results. No worry about recruitment; panelists will never even know they’re carrying a meter! Blaster Dir./National Promotion Bob Reeves: It’s an old wish that I wish to wish every year: More diversity and less conformity in radio. It’s a pipe dream, I know.

When I was a kid, I always wished for a pony or for my Dad to buy the New York Jets, and my Dad, if he were alive today, would say to me, “Get over it kid, the business has changed.” Looking at sales charts, everyone’s wish for the record industry should be that we come out of the death spiral we’re currently experiencing. While it’s satisfying to see that many of the platinum records on the chart these days are country, it’s disconcerting to see stars with big hits like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Robin Thicke struggle to make it to the million-unit mark. But as not to end on such a bleak note, I also wish for the further rise of the independent label to innovate, re-create and disrupt the norms that too many have come to accept as the status quo. WZZK/Birmingham PD Dave Dunaway: I wish for radio and the people in it to teach more. Share your knowledge with your new recruits. As for the record industry, more cowbell, please!
