As I’m trying to get back into singing regularly it would be sour grapes to offer a tirade of ‘I’ve got nothing prepared,’ or ‘I’ve got a sore throat,’ after all I love music. Actually this could be a good lead- up to me working with the newly discovered Mr Fantastic a songwriter whom I arranged to write with. So I dust off my guitar, strum it awkwardly and attempt at penning a new tune. I‘m there for ages trying to be relevant and write something intelligent about Mary Seacole or Sojourner Truth but the subject matter veers towards my neurosis. “Just go with it” I tell myself. Isn’t it an artists’ prerogative to be self-obsessed? Eventually the song is finished, entitled ‘That’s Why’ and I thinks it’s okay. It’s Wednesday, Kentish town and I’m nearly late. Greeted by an audience of all women I can feel their anticipation. During the show various people go up to perform thought provoking poems, sing powerful songs about struggle, prejudice and heartache. So I am about to have my debut guitar performance. I study the crowd and they are rowdy! Anxiety rising. It’s my turn. I go up and disaster strikes as I knock over the Kente cloth draped screen on a table with a regal, picture frame of an exceptionally fine African Emperess. Everything brok’ up! Ok, so I’ve begun my song like Mr Bean but I persevere. I pull my too short mini skirt down a bit and strum. Silence! 1st verse! They stare motionless. Chorus. So I get them to sing along with the end of the song. Pause. Then… whooping and cheering come from the crowd. “Phew!” They loved it and more importantly they related to it.
