Principal’s Message - Final Report for 2019
In our final edition, you will find leader
and class contributions
celebrating the amazing efforts and performance of our
BSPS community throughout 2019.
Enjoy!
Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
This is our final Bulletin for the year and it has certainly been a year to remember! Our 50th birthday celebrations were memorable and hopefully did justice to our rich history of bilingual education, while acknowledging the present and welcoming the future.
Thank you to all our contributors to the Bulletin- our staff leadership team, class teachers, student leaders, School Council, Parents' Club, SRC, the office and community groups.
Thank you to Mrs Sandy Dolphin for her amazing effort and patience in putting the masterpiece together on a weekly basis.
We hope our community has found the Bulletin, the first stop for all of the important BSPS information.
In our final edition, you will find leader and class contributions celebrating the amazing efforts and performance of our BSPS community throughout 2019. Enjoy!
Staff Changes for 2020
It is that time of the year again where we farewell students and families, and thank them for their wonderful contribution to our unique school. Over the coming week and at our Year 6 Graduation we will do just that.
But now it is time to acknowledge and inform our community of important staff changes for 2020. Firstly, a number of our staff are leaving us and we sincerely thank them for their invaluable imprint into the history books of BSPS:
Mrs Sandy Dolphin- after an inspirational 45 years of service and 17 years at BSPS, Sandy will be retiring into the sunset. It has been a pleasure to work with someone so positive and happy. She has amazing patience and she has a beautiful manner with the students. Sandy will be missed.
Mr Linton Roe- while we have said goodbye and good luck to Linton last year as he ventured into educational language consultancy, it would be remiss of the school, not to acknowledge the enormous contribution Linton has made to our school and in particular the bilingual program. Thank you! Linton has formally resigned from DET and we wish him all the very best for the future.
Frau Lara Skerstupp and Frau Melanie Chadwick- our journey with them has been too short but we have very much appre-ciated their work this year. We wish them all the very best as they head back overseas.
Mrs Brooke Leslie—a short but important contribution to BSPS. She leaves with a lasting impression on students, staff and parents.

New arrivals
The very nature of our school continuing to grow and with a few staff leaving means that excitingly we will welcome a number of new staff:
We are extremely pleased with the quality of our new staff members with a range of graduates and experienced teachers sure to complement our existing team.
Next year, the subject organisation is the same as in 2019, except that Music will be taught in English. This is because we were unable to employ a quality German music teacher to the standards we set. Our intention is to return to our usual set up in this area for 2021.

2020 classes
Just a quick word on the 2020 classes, we have invested in a program that assists us with forming our class lists and we have taken all the information from students, teachers and parents and entered the data. Moving forward, this program will enable us to track requests and teacher comments over a number of years rather than on a year-to-year basis.
It is important to note as per our procedures over the past 5 years, i.e. parent requests need to be put in writing, that there will be no class changes. So your support in assisting your child through change will be much appreciated.
Have a great weekend and last school week of 2019!

From the Office
Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Grade 5 & 6 2020 - Camp 19th – 21st February 2020. The confirmed costed is $315.00. Full payment must be made by Monday, 10th February 2020. One more week to go! How quickly the year has flown! It doesn’t seem that long ago we were welcoming our new Preps to school for the first time and we are now preparing to say goodbye to our graduating year six students. We, in the office, first meet your children when they can hardly be seen over the top of the bench and finally wave goodbye to them seven years later as happy, confidant, optimistic and polite young ‘nearly teenagers’ who, in some instances, tower above us. It is a unique privilege to have the opportunity to watch your children grow academically, physically and emotionally. It’s also lovely to see so many ex-students drop in each year just to say hello. Congratulations to everyone on the progress and successes they’ve had and we look forward to the year ahead with all the fun, experiences and growth that will bring. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas. Noleen Maxwell, Sandy Dolphin, Brooke Leslie On a personal note, I would like to thank the school
community for making my job so easy for me. It is
nice to see smiling faces at the office window.
I will miss the school community in my retirement,
but you never know where we may see each other
down the track.
It has been a pleasure to see so many children
progress through the school, and there have been
quite a few in my 17 years here.
Kind Regards
Sandy Dolphin

From the Assistant Principal
Dear BSPS community,
As 2019 draws towards its inevitable close, we reflect back on how the year has gone and in par-
ticular the significant moments. In our case I think one of these moments is yet to arrive. This will
be the final day of school, whereby some members of our staff will unfortunately be saying good-
bye.
For one particular staff member, our illustrious leader and principal Mr Jayson Williams, the im-
pact of his imminent departure will be HUGE.
As the Principal of Bayswater South Primary School, he will leave a legacy that is extraordinary in
itself and hard for anyone following in his footsteps to live up to.
Consider the following milestones achieved over the last 5 years:
In 2015 BSPS had 260 students (approximately)
In 2019, BSPS will have 400 students (approximately)
This translates to 11 classes in 2015 and 17 classes in 2020.
Realization of the 50:50 Bilingual School model we are now famous for
Renovation of approx. 90% of the school buildings in the last 5 years
Synthetic grass basketball court and front of school area
Initiation of the International Baccalaureate PYP Program and move towards accreditation
Remodelling of the school oval into current track and field configuration
While Mr. Williams would be the first to say that these achievements are a
testament to the culture we have here at BSPS and the way our fantastic staff
work together with community support (especially from School Council and
Parent Club), I would hasten to mention that all the above accomplishments
have been achieved through the vision and drive of the person who has lead
from the front for the last five years.
That is Mr Jayson Williams.
On behalf of everyone I would like to thank Mr. Williams for the amazing job
he has done as Principal of BSPS. Thank you for your focus on having fun (like
being dunked at the Christmas market) and the importance you placed on
relationship and culture building. The impact you have had on the school as a
whole is there for all to see. Your focus has always been on our students and
all the decisions you make are always made through the lens of “how will this
benefit our students?”
We wish you all the best for your relocation to Sweden. Our loss is their gain
and we are sure you will fit right back in as principal of a very lucky local
school and continue to set your sights on positively impacting the lives of all
your new students and the local community.

Preps have had a wonderful first year at school. Students have participated in many special events such
as; Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea, Father’s Day Breakfast, Grandparents’ Afternoon, 100 Days Of School,
Letterland Dress up Day, Swimming, Production, Prep Celebration and we finished off the year with their
very first excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. Wow! They have had a fun packed year with so many
events, the Prep teachers think the students are well and truly ready for a holiday and some much
needed sleep (see photos below).
Ms Payne, Frau Schmelzle, Frau Sylvia and Ms May would like to wish the Preps and their families a
wonderful Christmas and restful break.

It has been an action-packed year for the 3/4s. Our units of inquiry have provided the context for
students to explore in depth a range of learning areas and express that learning in multiple ways. A big
shout out to our EA staff, parent helpers and community members who played an essential role in the
organisation and implementation of our learning programs. Here is just a snap shot of the year:

The students and staff of Years 5 and 6, would like to wish everyone a wonderful Summer holiday time and a Happy New
Year. We would like to thank the parents who helped us throughout the year, especially during production time and in
preparations for graduation. Without the ongoing assistance, many of our special events and activities would not have been
as memorable for our students. Other recent highlights for the students have been the camp to Canberra and the Colour
Run.
The camp to Canberra connected to our inquiry into How We Organise Ourselves with the central idea that ‘societal decision
making impacts our lives’. The students inquired about the processes of our democracy, such as elections and parliament,
through research, discussions and role plays in the classroom. Students on camp were then able to link their inquiries to real
life though the visit to Parliament House. Visits to Art galleries while on camp also reinforced the students earlier inquiry
into How We Express Ourselves with the central idea, ‘creating and responding to art helps us understand ourselves and
others’.
Our final inquiry for the year has been Sharing the Planet with the central idea that ‘the sustainability of ecosystems
depends on the actions of everyone’ and the students have been researching about different ecosystems across the world
and how the plants and animals are interconnected. Students have also looked into how an ecosystem has changed over
time and been impacted by elements outside the natural system.
Again, we wish everyone a wonderful Summer holiday time and a Happy New Year. We hope everyone has an enjoyable
holiday. Congratulations to our graduating students and wish them all the best for their future.

Mathematics News
2019 in Mathematics
Our year has been a busy one. It is always a busy one. Which makes the achievements of the students and teachers this year
extra impressive.
Let’s start with the students…
We have happy, engaged and creative students across the school at Bayswater South. They constantly surprise us with their
persistence and determination in their journey towards mastering Mathematics.
From Prep – Year 2, our focus was always ‘hands on’ where the mathematics could be modelled and organised physically.
The Years 3 – 6 while still using concrete materials, moved more toward representing their mathematical thinking through
abstract expressions, equations and representations.
The students’ response to assessments allowed us to target their point of need, zoom in and focus on specific skills and disci-
plines, as well as meaningfully report to you, the parents, at the end of each semester.
And now to the teachers…
Just like the students, we have happy, engaged and creative teachers at Bayswater South. Their expertise and intellect was
the driving force behind a year of massive growth.
Teachers watched each other teach. This provided a platform for teachers to give and receive targeted feedback about their
practice, language and dispositions – a huge success that will continue into 2020.
Our weekly coaching hours covered everything from inquiries into Mathematics, activities to support reasoning, important
conversations about learning and teaching, assessment and data analysis. This was an important factor in the growth and
development of the team. Look out 2020.
Finally, the entire staff aligned their focus around the power of feedback and formative assessment – building a picture of
the needs of each student (social, physical, emotional, academic, cognitive, and behavioural). This is the corner stone of a
meaningful and intentional learning environment and we can’t wait to continue this important learning in 2020.
From the entire Mathematics Team, we thank you and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
Regards,
Dan Zielinski
Mathematics Learning Specialist.

From our Wellbeing Coordinators
WOW! What a WONDERFUL year in WELLBEING at BSPS In 2019, the theme at BSPS was ‘connectedness’ between staff, students and families in the community.
In February, students from Prep to Year 6 participated in Life Education program (optional). And some classes continued with the booklets and created an activity from this incursion.

In March 2019, the student leadership team launched a superhero Assembly to raise awareness about Bullying (National 'Say No to Bullying'). Links to the Learner Profile (Caring) was also made.
The SRC were voted in Term 1 and in 2019 the Learner Profile was used as a criteria in the speeches. The certificates for the SRC leaders, Year 6 leadership team and House Captains included the terminology of 'risk-taker' (Learner Profile).
In Term 2, the name 'Electives' (a tradition at BSPS) was changed to 'Connect Groups' to make links to the 2019 theme and wellbeing purpose (connecting with others). A big thank you to Miss Devilee and Frau Chadwick for their amazing organization and help in leading Connect Groups.
Declan S asked to host The Biggest Morning Tea in 2019. While it was adapted to the traditional morning tea, it was fantastic to see donations and the school supporting the cause by wearing yellow. The school raised over $300.
In Term 4, 'Walk to School' month was a big hit! It included stickers, raffles, prizes, poster competition (with over 50 entries) and Crazy Socks Day. A big success was winning a prize for our high participation rate. An incursion was arranged with the council for Prep-Year 2 students and the Mayor of Knox attended, too.

On 11/11/2019 at 11:11am we had a moment of silence to remember all those who have fought for our country (past and pre-sent). Thank you to our school captains for representing the school at the Remembrance Day memorial service.
In 2019, our fantastic school leaders lead the Assembly items with confidence. They also worked hard to make them engaging and fun. For example, a watermelon competition! Many links to the Learner Profile were made. Thank you team!

Throughout the year we had socials, special morning and afternoon teas for staff. We also had a yoga for the BSPS community (free of charge). It was wonderful to see families join in!
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and wonderful start to a new decade. We are so excited for another great chapter at BSPS in 2020!

From Our PYP Coordinator
As the school year comes to a close, it seems timely to look back at how far Bayswater South Primary has come
with the IB Primary Years Program.
Here are some of the highlights from 2019.
Program of Inquiry (POI) Development
The start of the year brought along with it the creation of the school’s odd and even year Program of Inquiry
(POI). This has provided teachers with a framework through which teaching and learning at the school has
been centred.
Polices
This year saw the finalisation of the following three polices: Language policy, Academic Policy and the Assess-
ment Policy. These polices along with many others can now be viewed on the school website.
Parent Master Class
In Term 4, our Parent Master Class provided a wonderful opportunity to families to learn more about the Inter-
national Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) of which we are a candidate school. It was at this
event that our new polices were launched. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend. Look out for
more of these events in 2020.
Highlights from inside the classroom. Over the year, there has been some wonderful inquiries that haven taken place across the school. These in-quiries have encouraged students to think critically and globally. Many students have taken action as a result of their learning experiences at school.
Years 1 and 2 Who we are: An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values;
personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relation-
ships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and
responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Central Idea: Choices help us create a balanced life

Lines of Inquiry: What a healthy mind and body looks like, feels like and sounds like. How we can be responsible for the care of our body and mind. Connections between a healthy body and mind.
Demonstration of Learning: Students demonstrated their knowledge and understanding by: Inquiring into the choices they can make to take care of their minds and bodies. Finding out about the healthy eating guidelines and how to be sun smart. Learning new strategies to use when they are feeling sad, wor-ried, disconnected or if they are having a conflict. Setting personal goals for making healthy choices.
Throughout the unit, students took action which they shared with each other.

Years 3 and 4 How the world Works: An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural
world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific princi-
ples; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central Idea: Humans use their understanding of scientific principles in everyday life
Lines of Inquiry: An inquiry into….
1. Simple machines
2. Forces and scientific principles Creating complex machines
Demonstration of Learning: Students demonstrated their knowledge and understanding inquiring into: Different forces Parts and components of machines Circulation of energy and how energy can be transformed
Throughout the unit the students were encouraged to be open minded, problem solvers and use critical and creative thinking skills. They worked collaboratively to create their own a Rube Goldberg Machines.
I would like wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to working with you all next year, and seeing what wonderful inquires the students get up to in 2020. Karyn Georgios PYP Coordinator

Year 6 Bike Ed On-Road test
On Friday 6th December, Year 6 students completed an on-road test around the streets of Bayswater. All students were able
to complete the bike check before heading out on their bike adventure (air in tyres, brakes working, chain oiled and drop
test).
All the year 6 students demonstrated excellent bike handling skills, road
awareness and correct turning procedures.
When turning right around a corner students followed these simple
steps to ensure that they would safely make the turn.
On-road right turn procedure:
Step 1: Scan over the right shoulder to check for traffic behind you.
Step 2: If clear move closer to the centre of the road.
Step 3: Signal with your right arm out stretched at 90 degrees.
Step 4: Scan left and right for traffic.
Step 5: If clear proceed through the turn. If not clear stop before the
turn. Move foot into power position (pedal near top of bike for quick
take off). When traffic has passed scan and signal once more before
turning.

Goodbye from our wonderful school leaders!
School Captains: Deakin and Amelie Deakin - This year, I was the school captain for B.S.P.S. I have grown so much since the start of the year and would like to reflect on something I have grown a lot since the start of my leadership. At the start of the year, I was a very shy speaker, but I’ve managed to grow confidence and develop a skill for speaking. Along with this, I am proud of the way I’ve handled speaking, and the way I’ve run assemblies with the rest of the team. I am very proud of this and everything I’ve done a part of the leadership team, and look to use these skills I’ve learnt in the future.
Amelie-This year has been really eye opening to what it’s like to be a leader, and to have responsibilities
outside of doing small favours for people you know. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be a School
Captain this year, and to be a part of the Leadership Team, which has taught me a lot about working as a
team.
Vice Captains: Hannah and Anders
Being Vice School captains has been such a great privilege this year. We have had such a
great time getting to know the kids at this school better as well as helping to lead assemblies each Friday.
We have had a lot of fun working with the leadership team and the lovely Miss Koch. We have enjoyed
celebrating the 50th anniversary this year at this amazing school that has brought so much to us. Our
eventful year has unfortunately come to an end and it saddens us deeply that our time is almost up. We
hope that we have made a positive impact on the school and will leave behind a good legacy. We wish
the future School and Vice Captains all the best. Thank you all so much for being part of our fabulous
time here. We wish Mr.Williams all the best going back to Sweden. Congratulations to everyone for being such good members of the BSPS community this year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!!!
Academic Captains: Sashenka and Josiah This year, we had had the honour of being Academic Captains. It has been so much fun, especially when
we hosted the watermelon eating contest and other Assembly items. It was a privilege to be part of the
50th year at BSPS. Being a leader means helping students and doing the right thing even when no one is
watching. We wish next year’s leaders all the best, and we wish Mr. Williams all the best as he travels
back to Sweden.
Wellbeing Captains: Mia and Cian Hi, it’s Cian and Mia, here to bring you our last Wellbeing article. What a year it’s been for wellbeing. Year five Peer-Mediation went off with big enthusiasm, whole school Life Ed, 5/6 Healthy Relationships, Walk to school month, and the Colour Run. And that’s just to name a few! All this played a big part keeping all the students happy and healthy.

The learner profiles were introduced this year, and the students welcomed them with open arms. And those opened arms brought in some fantastic events during assembly such as the watermelon eating competition. Sport Captains: Ella and Patrick Being sports captains, this year was so much fun and we are thankful to of have gotten the opportunity to have that leadership role. The things we've enjoyed this year while being Sports Captain is: athletics, swimming, cross country, winter and summer sports and hoop time. We’re glad to have had the opportunity to have the responsibility to run the Colour Run and footy day. We’re sad to be leaving but excited for High School.
A BIG thank you on behalf of everyone from BSPS to our 2019 amazing school leaders

Embrace The Chaos Of Holidays And Survive Well!
Hi Parents, how can you embrace the chaos of the holidays with your children?
There’s a certain chaos, unpredictability and spontaneity about childhood that adults can’t contain. We try very hard to control it, but it generally comes out at some point. Sure, we’ve got to keep our children safe and teach them to be social, but we tend to socialise some of the chaos out of them. Basically, that is what discipline is about. It’s for their good as much as ours. But when we understand that there is a certain spirit to childhood that we can't hold back, we tend to relax more into parenting. We have to let our kids be kids! Now that the holidays have nearly arrived you may find your children become more unpredictable, more demanding and more child-like. They may become more noisy, more boisterous and more messy than you’re used to. You’ve got two choices when you’re confronted with childhood chaos, get annoyed and fight it, or go with the flow and accept it. If you’re having trouble deciding, it’s worth remembering that childhood is pretty short and children grow up very fast, so make the most of this special time. If you can, let chaos be your friend for a while and embrace the changes and mess your children and holidays bring.
Most of us can’t wait until the holidays come. There’s a collective sigh as school ends and we get off the extremely busy activity roundabout. Then it’s full steam ahead to Christmas and the long break. It’s great to spend some down-time with your children, but it can also become a tedious time. I always found it best to mix up the activities during the holidays. That is, mix the time between Family time, Free time & Friend time. Family time is the time children spend with you one-on-one or playing with their siblings, or when the whole family goes out or spends quality time together at home. Free time is about children occupying themselves, which is a really important skill to learn. So don't be on the go all the time, children need to have the chance to learn to keep themselves occupied, and to relax. Encourage them to get outside in the fresh air too. Friend time is about children spending some time with their friends in the neighbourhood or from school, or it may be with their cousins. It’s also about parents spending time with friends as well. Holidays are a great time to catch up.
Get the balance right and there’s more of a chance that you’ll all have a great break and no one will get sick of each other. So remember to take one day at a time and if you have a bad day, there’s always tomorrow when you get a fresh start and the chance to change what you found didn’t work yesterday.
Enjoy the wonderful season of Christmas, take time to appreciate the joys of being together as a family. Put your phones down, sit back and delight in your children, because they do grow up so quickly!!
Christmas Blessings to you and your family
