MeetCEC'sNewProgramLeaders! Turhania Fitts, Cheryl Stolle, Pam Herrmann, Tammy Parker, and Jessica House !

School Programs and Community SustainabilityRegisterbycontactingTraciat765-855-3188ort.lewis@copeenvironmental.org.

With a combined 108 years of classroom experience and 17 years of outdoor educational experience, Turhania Fitts, Cheryl Stolle, Pam Herrmann, Tammy Parker, and Jessica House make up the new CEC education team! They have been busy preparing new materials, writing new programs, and updating curriculum to align with state education standards. And above all else, our team is having FUN with fall programs for area classes visiting CEC!

Field trips are a vital part of every child’s learning experience. CEC field trips allow children to experience nature and the environment firsthand. Repeated experiences outdoors are vital to children as they grow and learn. All field trips are aligned to Indiana’s CORE Standards and can easily be formatted to fit Ohio State Standards.

Leading and teaching our nearly 1,000 student visitors on the fall schedule to Cope’s "Outdoor Classroom" are (left to right): Turhania, Cheryl, Pam, Jessica, and Tammy. THANK YOU to our program leaders!

“Sharing Cope Environmental Center with children of all ages is such a delight. From my earliest memories, nature has been both a companion and a teacher. It has fed my curiosity, inspiration, enchantment, and given me solace.“ --Cheryl Stolle

CEC's sustainable building is currently in its year-long certification process to become a full Living Building in accordance with the Living Building Challenge (LBC). The idea behind this challenge is that all aspects of the building must be as clean and efficient as a flower.

Going along with this idea, LBC has seven flower petals, or focus areas: Water, Energy, Site, Materials, Beauty, Equity, and Health.

THE CHALLENGE: Each petal has its own requirements that we must meet. To receive certification, we must turn in documentation detailing 12 consecutive months of data for energy and water usage from the currently operating system.

For the energy petal we originally installed 85 solar panels, a number established by complex models and calculations based on weather patterns, estimated energy usage, and estimated energy production to achieve net-zero usage. As the number of educational programs, visitors, and facility rentals increased the energy usage was amplified beyond what the panel system was originally designed for.

CEC Begins A New Year-of-Review!We were ecstatic that the building had become so popular a destination for our community; however, our energy usage was no longer net-zero. To solve this issue and prepare for future growth, we installed 40 new solar panels in August 2018. To comply with the LBC certification process, our year-of-review process had to be officially restarted. We are now in our fourth month (November) in our year-of-review process with the new and currently operating panel system.

Based on the usage patterns of 2017, we are now producing enough energy to meet the increased demands on our building and will meet our goal of net-zero energy usage by August 2019.

Alternative, sustainable energy involves a lot of trial and error, planning for an unknown future, and thinking outside the box in order to solve complex issues. Sustainability is attainable though, and CEC has stepped up to the Living Building Challenge with the support of a wonderful community that is invested in creating a bright and healthy future. Thank you for leading the way!
