BAYSIDE CITY COUNCIL 2015 SUMMER VACATION CARE

Forms available at the school office or click on the Bayside logo.

Canteen news The Subway Special Lunch Day was a huge success last Friday with 357 children and 3 staff members enjoying some healthy wraps and snacks. As Subway donated $1 for each lunch ordered, we raised $360.00. We have thanked Subway at Chelsea Heights and will be sending them a Certificate of Appreciation today. The canteen is now closed for the remainder of this year and will re-open on Monday 9th February in 2015. Volunteer request forms have been sent home with the children (and emailed to incoming families) and if you would like to help out next year, please complete the form and return it to the office by 4pm tomorrow so that a roster can be formulated and contact can be made with you during the holidays. Volunteering at the canteen is a great way to meet new people and your children will love having you here. I would like to extend a very special thank you to Jodie Stewart, former Canteen Manager, for her support during the term while I've been filling in, together with Robyn, Helen and Cath in the office for their ongoing help. Finally, the canteen wouldn't run without our wonderful volunteers, so thank you to you all. We've had a lot of fun! I wish all the families and staff of Beaumaris Primary School a very happy and safe holiday. Ellie Hilton

WASTESAVERS A reminder that our new initiative “Bag it and Bring it!” runs throughout the year so if you have anything to recycle please bring it to school and put it in the special recycling bin opposite lost property. Since first collection on Tuesday 2nd Dec we have already raised $86.75 for our school. So far:

217kg of unwanted or outgrown clothing has been recycled

54 bags of all size and colours received

35 of the blue bags supplied have been returned (equates to 8.5% of the 410 supplied) 42kg of shoes and bags received (equates to 19%) Please remember if you are having a clean out over the holidays to save anything that can be recycled and help raise funds for our school. Many thanks

FOND MEMORIES FROM FORMER STUDENT GILLIAN DICKSON I have very fond memories of my childhood in Beaumaris, including my school years.

My parents had bought a new 2 bedroom cream brick veneer home at 85 Fourth St, Beaumaris.

We had a large back yard with a sandpit and monkey bars.

The front yard was terraced, as my Dad was a plumber, he installed a pop-up sprinkler system which we adored, particularly in summer as we would run through the water sprays with bare feet and bathers.

I went to the Jack and Jill Kindergarten and enjoyed the dolls and toys to play with.

My Mum would sew all our clothes on her treadle Singer sewing machine, she would also knit our many cardigans and jumpers for myself, brother and two sisters.

I went to Beaumaris State School and I was in preps grade 1G in 1964. We had a very kindly teacher whose name I can’t remember.

Then in grade 1A in 1965, we had a teacher called Miss Pullen. I was terrified of her as other students had said she pulls your hair!

Our mothers had to make cushions for us to sit on as we would often have a story or lesson whilst sitting on the floor.

I still remember the big old blackboards with the ABC written up neatly along the top of it.

I still have my very first reader – it was called John and Betty. Each of us would take it in turns standing next to the teacher, trying to pronounce each new word correctly. It was another terrifying experience for me.

My older sister of 18 months and I would walk from Fourth Street, across the park to school, we would gaze up and wave as the regular helicopter taking Sir Reginald Ansett would fly past. It was always on time so we could gauge where we were and if we had to hurry or not.

I had friends called Jacqui and Melinda. Sadly I am no longer in touch with them as I left at the end of Grade 2. I moved suburbs and school as my parents had sold our comfy but crowded little home to build a brand new 2 storey house in Frankston.

Years later I saw them again when I had my last few years of school at Mentone Girls’ Grammar.

Interestingly, some years after that I began working for Ansett Airlines. It was a very exciting, sometimes adventurous place to work. I really enjoyed my 15 years there, up until the company folded.

So, I’m wishing Beaumaris Primary School a very happy 100 year celebration. May you always strive to do your best. Former student, Gillian Dickson. (The transcription of these memories have been slightly edited to exclude references to photographs which have not been included in this edition of our newsletter)

LEVEL LOW DOWN

Year One Mrs Gardiner had a baby girl! Olivia Joy Gardiner was born on Sunday and will be an excellent sister for Lucas. We are very excited and happy for her. We hope all of our parents enjoyed our carols performance and all our dance moves as we all practiced very hard. A few reminders: Friday 12th is our House athletics carnival at school wear a t-shirt in your house colour with school shorts or skort. Tuesday 16th is meet the teacher day. Wednesday 17th is our class party with pizza lunch and games afternoon. Friday 19th we finish at 1.30pm.

Year Two There was great excitement last Friday in the Year 2 classrooms as we took part in our final

incursion for the year. We had lots of fun learning about the history of toys which is linked to

our history learning intention. After listening to an interesting talk students were given the

opportunity to play with many different toys from the past to present,

without any technology in sight! It was great to see everyone so engaged

and using their imaginations.

Prep As the last week of school approaches, our Preps are feeling very excited about Year 1! We have been busy revising many of the concepts learnt throughout the year including counting on and back from any two-digit number and writing neatly and correctly on dotted thirds. The Preps spent a long time practising their Christmas Carol this week and it sure paid off! They were just brilliant! We hope that all of the parents, guardians, family members and special friends who attended thoroughly enjoyed the night.

Year Three What a busy week we’ve had in Year 3! Monday began with a complimentary shelter building incursion provided by our good friends at Supreme Incursions. The students were given a budget to plan and build shelter to uphold rain and wind. Most teams spent their extra money on sand bags and ropes. They all worked so beautifully in teams sharing ideas and jobs to reach their goal of keeping dry! We would also like to congratulate our Year 3’s performing our

Christmas carols

last night. We

absolutely rocked!

We hope you

enjoyed the

festivities.

Year Four The Year 4 Science Expo was held this morning. The students were particularly proud of their final research project for the year. Student Reflection Term 4 Science Educational Research Project This ERP I learnt heaps of new skills and had great fun. I believe I spent my time well and had a great final project. I had a little bit of trouble finding good research about climate change for kids. My favourite thing about this ERP was presenting it at the Expo. Before this term I wasn’t into Science that much, but now it’s one of my interests. Now I know all about erosion and weathering. I am proud of my project. Milla Kerr 4B

Year Five Congratulations to all the Year 5 students who successfully

demonstrated safe, skillful cycling under supervision on

roads in the local area and received their Bike Ed on-road

cycling level 3 certificate. Please note that the certificate

does not guarantee your child’s ability to ride on-road,

and we encourage you to read the advice in the back of

the certificate to help your child to be a safe bicycle rider.

The Year 5 bike hike was a memorable day out and a great

way to wrap up our Bike Ed. The weather was beautiful

and we all enjoyed riding along our gorgeous bayside

beaches. A big thank you to the Year 6 teachers, Jo - our emergency

vehicle driver and coffee courier, and our wonderful parent helpers –

Penny, Ian, Paris, Sam, Lee, Geoff, Melanie, Michelle, David, Carien, Deb,

Craig and Ed.

The lifesaving program is in full swing and involves fun and educational

activities with a major emphasis on water safety. The open water

activities are enhancing the students’ capacity to make safer choices and

become more familiar with our

local bay beach conditions.

One week to go!

Year Six This week in Year 6 we have been busily preparing for graduation. Students are learning their speeches and the songs they'll be performing on the night. It's sure to be an exciting and emotional night, celebrating our students' primary school experiences. After this we have our ride to Elwood on Wednesday and our end-of-year assembly on the Friday.

Stationery Collection for Fijian Children This is the last week of 2014 and there is lots of spare stationery. So for the last week of school we would like all classes to collect any “still good to use stationery and writing books” these spare bits of stationery will be going to Fijian children that live in orphanages or are very poor. If there are any people at home that would like to donate spare stationery and writing books that would be great help, this includes usable pencils, pens, textas, rubbers, sharpeners and rulers, there will be a box at the office to put it into. Thank you from April, Isla and Sienna.

FROM OUR PARENT CLUB…….

Carols Night Market Thank you to all families for supporting our market and picnic theme last night at the Christmas Carols. The BFAC crew had the sausages sizzling by 5pm and the weather was on our side. The main part of the night was also up to the usual fabulous standard. We trust that you all enjoyed your night.

Scholastic A huge thank you to everyone who has bought books this year from the Scholastic catalogues. The fabulous total we raised this year was $1380. We look forward to continuing this program next year and raising even more money to spend on books for our children. Many thanks Ness Newell

Hello Students, Parents and Teachers, The end of the year is fast approaching and we are reflecting on the year gone by and our wishes for the future. This week at Beaumaris OSHC we have completely rearranged the OSHC room making it more accessible for children to pursue individual interests. We now have more space for activities and play stations including an area for quiet time and reading. Will T. and Georgia S. were incredible helping to set up our new library area. I would like to thank Evie and Sienna for repairing our much loved cubby house. We have had it for 2 terms now and it was starting to look a little worse for wear and the girls have done an incredible job fixing it up for us. Christmas arts and craft have been huge here at OSHC, we made our own salt dough Christmas ornaments, Christmas cards, Christmas trees and snow men. Our biggest highlight last week was our Thursday cooking activity in which we made ice-cream cone Christmas trees and marshmallow snowmen. It looked so good that many of us couldn’t eat it, but then many of us couldn’t wait to eat it all up! It’s very sad to have one last week with our amazing grade 6s. They have been great leaders and role models and while it’s sad to see them go, they will have an amazing time at high school. In preparation for the New Year, if your child is not longer attending OSHC or if your bookings are changing next year please remember to update BaseCamp to avoid any extra fees or charges. Parents new to Camp Australia please register your child prior to their OSHC attendance. Any confusion or questions please pop in and have a chat to Educator Jessica. Thanks everyone and have a lovely weekend, Jessica and Ashley
