President Report
Liebe Mitglieder,
etwas geboten.
Dear members
Spring has begun, even if it is only according to the calendar,
and with this our Glühwein season has ended. Now the beer
garden season is starting again and it would be really nice
if you could come along on Sunday afternoons to enjoy the
Happy Hour from 5 pm to 6 pm with us. Armanda also always has something
delicious from the kitchen to offer us.
On the 18th August we had a full house and a fun hilarious evening with the
Alpengaudi, which was led by the Edelweiß Dance Group. The atmosphere
was amazing and it was already a foretaste of our approaching Oktoberfest
evenings.
And please also don’t forget to come to the Oktoberfest Family Day on the last
Sunday in October from 2 pm. There will be something for everyone, adults
and children alike.

Secretary’s Report
On 24 August group leaders from many different cultural clubs in Perth met
for the first time here in the Rhein-Donau Club. This meeting was organised by
Henrietta Podgorska, President of the Hungarian Association of WA, and it led
to many interesting exchanges of information. Ursula Deck and I represented
the Rhein-Donau Club.
Our club is quite successful compared to some of the others because we have
large premises, offer many varied activities and have a committee that is very
engaged in the running of the club.
Most clubs have similar problems to ours; an aging membership; buildings that
are increasingly expensive to maintain; fewer and fewer volunteers; and not
enough younger members.
There are, however, many positive signs. Families with young children
are showing a growing interest in their roots and many clubs are trying to
encourage younger members to attend events, with offers of their own ethnic
food and drinks.
In the future we will be sharing information about our events with each other
so that members can visit other clubs when something special is happening.
Everyone found this meeting to be very positive and there are already plans to
meet again at the end of November, this time at the Hungarian Association.

On Friday 7. September the German teachers from the Teachers’
Association for German in WA organised an evening in our club to
celebrate the Day of German Language.
Students from years 4 to 10 were invited to write Elfchen ( a short poem of
eleven words) and to have them hung up in the club. Everyone then was
allowed to vote as to who had written the best poem; there was a prize
for the best in each year.
Tanja Colgan, the president of TAGWA organised a great program with
many games and dances. Two RDC groups also participated. The Air
Pistol Group provided laser pistols for the children to have a go and the
Edelweiß Children’s Dance Group performed by playing the bells and
then dancing for the audience.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we were also delighted to
see so many young people in our club.

SEMINARWOCHE AUF DEUTSCH VON 29.1.-3.2.2019
SCHWERPUNKT GESUNDHEIT
Frau Dr. oec.

Table Tennis Club
My husband Trevor and I have just returned from a 6 week holiday in Europe. We visited around 13 countries in that time and our travels included a Baltic cruise, a Rhine river cruise and a heritage train ride through the Swiss Alps. We were thrilled to visit the beautiful German cities of Cologne, Rudesheim, Mainz, Heidelberg and Breisach, with a visit to the Black Forrest to see working cuckoo clocks and sample their famous Black Forrest cake. This was our first trip to Europe and we loved the beautiful buildings and cathedrals and rich history of the continent. While on the Rhine cruise we visited the stunning city of Strasbourg in France. We spent the day with Gautam who had recently returned to Strasbourg after spending a year in Perth. While he was living in Perth he loved playing table tennis and became a popular and talented member of our group. He is keen to find a friendly playing group back home.
The table tennis group approached the club seeking approval to use the shed in the car-park to set up some extra tables on a permanent basis. We are very pleased to report that the Board has granted us this approval for an initial period of two years. It is a great step forward for us as it will give us another two tables to use. There is some work to be done to make it suitable for playing table tennis. The walls and floors are very dusty and will require a lick of paint. Unfortunately, there is no power or lights, so we will be seeking contributions from interested members to fund a generator and some lights. We will schedule a ‘busy bee’ to get this project underway. Our thanks to the Board of the Club for ‘coming to the party’ on this project.
We will be holding our annual Quiz night on Friday 2nd November. This is our main fundraising event, so I hope we can get some good numbers this year. It is a fun night, and anyone is welcome. The cost will be $10 per person and tables are usually made up of 6 to 8 people. The bar and restaurant will be open on the night and the quiz contest will commence at 7.30pm. Raffle tickets will be sold on the night and any prize donations would be appreciated. Bookings can be made through myself on 0427354153 (email [email protected]) or through the club. Our entertainment troupe fondly known as “The Sweet Nutcrackers” was featured recently in the German magazine “Treff”. It was a good write up with photos of their skit on the Christmas In July night. It looks like they are famous and we may have to think of another act for next year!
Our Vice President Joyce Williams is entering the Australian Veterans Table Tennis Championship in Bendigo in October. She will be teaming up with her friend Roma James in the over 75’s doubles and competing in the individual over 80’s event as well. She wishes her well.
Best wishes to all,Debbie Solomon

Neederlandia - The Dutch Club WA
Neerlandia’s Electronics- and Software Club
In the previous RDC Club Magazine, we introduced you to the Maas & Waal
Drinks that Neerlandia organises once a month. This time we would like to tell
you a bit more about Neerlandia’s Electronics and Software Club.
This Club was founded and is run by Machiel van der Stelt, an enthusiastic
Neerlandia Committee Member. Machiel has his own Technology Business so
he knows a thing or two about the subject. I asked Machiel to tell us a bit about
this Club and following is what he explained to me:
The aim of this club is to get kids and adults interested and engaged in software
and hardware technologies. Participants of the Club activities learn how to enjoy
electronics and so discover how enjoyable it is to play with technology. The
Club’s activities make technology accessible and understandable while also
bringing people together.
Machiel continued telling me that over the course of the year he and the Club
members have run different courses and developed different kinds of projects.
For instance, the Club has assembled mini computers, has built electronic
circuits on experiment boards and also created its very own 3D printer. The 3D
printer, which is the latest project, is now finished and at the next Club meeting
Machiel and participants will be finalizing the calibration. To top it off, and if
time allows it, a 3D object may be printed.
When I asked him, Machiel explained that the minicomputers are used to teach
programming or coding either directly on the minicomputer itself or on robots.
Through educational play the kids, their (grand) parents or any other adult
interested, familiarize themselves with technology.
The attached photographs should give you an impression of the equipment. The
video link also illustrates what the Neerlandia Electronics- and Software Club is
all about.
https://stelt-technologies.com.au/community-involvement/
At the time of this magazine going to print another event is scheduled for
September. Like last April the Electronics and Software Club will meet in a park
to get actively involved in technology and software while in a relaxed BBQ
environment.
Everyone is welcome and for more information on this Club’s activities and for
registration please contact Machiel van der Stelt via machiel.vanderstelt@stelt-

WA Mandolin Orchestra
At the time of printing WAMO will have performed at the Kalamunda Arts
Centre after several rehearsals with the soloists
Duncan Gardiner and Masataka Hori.
On the 15th of September we joined the 60th Anniversary celebrations and
provided music for the folk dancing exhibition
plus played a medley of waltzes and polkas by Robert Schulz. To further the
popularity of the mandolin amongst the next generation, Robert, with the help
of several Orchestra members,
has commenced teaching
approx. eight young members
of the Vietnamese Society at
Girrawheen High School.
A quintet from WAMO trecked
up to Girrawheen some weeks
ago to perform for the children
and parents of the Society
to give them an idea of what is
possible and a goal to aim for.
The same quintet played
wallpaper music at a soiree
for Pharmacists who where
raising money for research,
on the evening of the 23rd of
August. The venue and food
where divine.

Hi All,
Our snooker tournament commenced on 3rd July and ran for 8 weeks. We
played a round-robin format where each of the players competed against each
other in a 3 frame match; with the top two, progressing to a 5 frame final.
Eugene played extremely well over the weeks and won all his matches and
finished top of the table, with Sanjay, second, and Mario, third. It ended up
getting to be a very close contest at the end.
The final took place on 21st August between Eugene and Sanjay.
There was good snooker played by both and excellent safety play. Final scores
ended up being:
29-55; 19-45; 52-63; with Sanjay winning the 2018 Championship.
Thank you to all
members who took
part and supported the
snooker group; Martin,
Mick, Mario, Sanjay and
Eugene.
Best wishes to Bill and
we all hope he has a
speedy recovery.
We continue to play
matches on a Tuesday
night and will be there
on the occasional Friday.
Regards
Sanjay

Hello members!
We would like to thank everyone who came and partied with us, donated and
participated in the raffle, set up, cleaned up, and all those others behind the
scenes at the club. We would also like to thank all those members who came
down on the night to support us! We trialed online booking for this event and
ended up with a sold out night! We haven’t had to turn people away from an
event in years, and although it was sad that they didn’t get to party with us, it
was a great feeling to have the hall full of fun and laughter. Thankfully there
weren’t many who we couldn’t squeeze in somewhere.
The children danced again, demonstrating their new dances, and as a
special surprise some children have been learning the bells, so gave a little
performance of their own for the first time.
Oktoberfest season is fast approaching us and we have many bookings for
performances at the club and at external venues. We urge everyone to come
down not to just those big events but to make use of the fantastic kitchen and
bar the club has to offer so we can continue to enjoy it for years to come- the
group is always there on Sunday afternoons so you can come down to say
hello and have a drink with us!
PROST!!

Eagle Eye Air Rifle Group
Hallo Shooters,
We celebrated the 50th Anniversary from the Eagle Eye Air Rifle Group and
every one enjoyed the afternoon together. Armanda and the kitchen staff looked
after us and also Heather who was behind the bar ,Thank you all for making the
Anniversary a success. It was so good to catch up with some of the early members
of the group .
We were pleased to see that Mae and Cheryl are on the mend after their illness.
Congratulation to Anthony for becoming the club Champion for 2018.
The Oktoberfest is already here again and we need all the help we can get
Good shooting,

Eagle Eye Air Pistol Group
Hello Members,
The pistol group has been progressing quite well with a few new members
joining in recent weeks. We have added Thursday nights onto our shooting
roster to enable us to cater for more people; we start at 6:30pm in addition
to our Friday 5-7pm timeslot and are attracting some top shooters from other
clubs coming for the competition and atmosphere the Rhein-Donau Club
offers. We had some members compete at the Whiteman Park ISSF competition
in late July with Mikayla Hatten and Jo Muir getting amongst the prizes. Well
done to both of them! Mikayla attended the national junior camp in Canberra
where the next generation of elite shooters are aided in developing their
skills to enable them to reach their goals in the sport. This was funded by the
national pistol shooting body Pistol Australia and is another benefit of being a
member of the Rhein-Donau Pistol Group
We are always looking for new members and can cater for people of all ages
and abilities with access to laser pistols for juniors under the age of 12. With
the club having multiple state team and a former national team representative
we are able to mentor new shooters to whatever level they wish to attain, from
club shooting to representing their country at the Olympics. Please feel free to
ring me with any enquiries regarding the Pistol Group.
Finally it was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of George
Abfalter; George was a
life member of the group
and only stepped down as
group leader at the Group
AGM in July, our heartfelt
condolences to George’s
family and friends.

For quite some time the club has been concerned with the large crowd moving, or perhaps better put, often crushing about the front of the lay out. Solution, build another door along the wall where the visitors can exit. We were fortunate to get the professional help of a RDC member to cut the hole in the brick wall with such expertise that it hardly raised a dust peck on the layout – well done, Richard Mann! We have accomplished enough to once again display our layout, quite proudly, at the coming Oktoberfest. The main achievement was finishing (when is it ever finished?) the two mountain villages by the castle. More trains will be running and again more repairs swere carried out.We look forward to your coming and perhaps hear sounds of approval.
