Hence, despite being loved to bits, Basil’s health was deteriorating as you can see in the first picture.

Unsurprisingly, his hooves were also nothing short of a mess (see the before and after pictures) and he was very sore for several weeks after the shoes were removed.

He was moved on to a ‘dry lot’ with plenty of grass hay, twice daily plain feeds (oaten chaff, copra and linseed meal) along with *Premium MVA, *ShapeUp (pure amino acids with a pre-biotic), XtraCal and salt. See the ‘after 9 weeks’ picture. *Please Note – the Australian version of these supplements are called Supreme Australian Horse vitamin & minerals & ShipShape.

It took around 2 months to get Basil looking great and the improvement in his hooves after only nine weeks be-tween photos and will continue to im-prove over the next 12 months. (he is due for another trim in the after pic taken today).

Now that his overall health, including

his muscle volume has improved, ShapeUp is no longer necessary. Summer is here and things are hotting up all over the country and we need to make sure our pets are well looked after to survive the heat.

Did you know your pet doesn't sweat? Unlike humans who have sweat glands all over their bodies to regulate their body temperature, dogs have them only on their nose and pads of their feet. The main way your dog can reduce his body temperature is by panting and breathing. Dogs have a higher body temperature than humans to begin with, so with their inefficient ability to cool down, we really need to ensure they are looked after during these hot spells. Top tips to keep your pet cool and safe during a hot summer

• Make sure your pet has plenty of cool fresh clean water at all times

• Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening - do not over exercise

• NEVER leave your pet in a parked
