Gallery35 at Community collaborated with CCSNY in creating art exhibit thatoffers a powerful message about restorative justice and reentry into communities. Summer Camp in VermontThis August I went to a piano camp in Vermont for oneweek. I had a coaching with the head of the camp in heroffice and she asked me what were my signature pieces.I told her that I had many and she asked to hear one ofthem. I played a part of the "Fantasie Impromptue byChopin". She asked me if I would like to have that sub-mitted to "Facebook". I said yes and lo and behold I sawmyself playing the piano.on the computer. I was thrilledto see myself playing. She wrote a short paragraph aboutme and said that I was 87 years old and still activelyplayed the piano; she also said that it "keeps meyoung" Many people responded with positive comments.~ Lois Ross

Becoming a Published PoetPoetry has never sustained my interest for very long, although I have enjoyed particular poems over the years. But this summer

that changed as I was enticed to participate in a poetry writing class at a senior center which I frequent. The teacher provided us witha list of prompts at each session. One prompt was to write about what food a favorite color brought to mind. The second prompt whichI chose was to write a tautogram. This she described as a poem where every word begins with the same letter. We were allowed to usea few helpers like on, and, etc. However, I chose to challenge myself by not to using any helpers as you will see.

The two poems below are the results of my efforts; they were published along with those of other class members, in a little book-let. Proceeds from the sale of the booklets go to the St. Johns Senior Center. ~ Rose Crayton

Concert by Joel MandelbaumBy Joel Mandlebaum

On Sunday afternoon, November 11, I will be giving a concertconsisting largely of my works, but with a few specialworks by others as well.

The genesis of this concert was a setting I made of a poem byRose Styron called Veterans Day, about the burial of the ashes of adead marine. What could be a more appropriate date to perform itthan Veterans Day? The real Veterans Day, November 11th, not thepale Monday substitute that has been the recent custom for cele-brations.

Most of you, being of a certain age, remember that what we nowcall “Veterans Day” was once celebrated as “Armistice Day”,marking the end of World War I with the armistice on November11, 1918. Note, therefore, that we will be marking the centennial,the 100th anniversary of that historic day. In commemoration, theprogram will also include an excerpt from the most celebratedmusical work marking the end of that war, Benjamin Britten’s WarRequiem, in which the standard Latin from the Mass for the Deadis combined with settings of poetry by Wilfred Owen, whose elo-quent verses were written while serving in the British Army in WWI, before he died in combat. My esteemed friend, Gilad Paz, willsing a brief segment of that masterpiece.

The longest work on the program will be my Suite for Recorderand Piano, to be given its world premiere by Randee Mia Berman

for whom I composed the piece in 1972! The program notes willattempt to explain the long passage of time between completionof the work and its introduction to the public, and also why it isthe same performer for whom it was written who will be playing iton November 11th.

Two songs from my cycle “Unfurl the Light” which was performedat Community by Emily Misch last year, will be sung again by her.This time, the two songs will have an extra instrument added totheir accompaniment, the violin for one and a horn for the other.What is noteworthy is that the two very different instruments willbe played by the same person, the extraordinary Kate Goddard.This performance will be a kind of audition to see how peoplereact to the extra layer of sound… violin or horn parts might laterbe added for the rest of the cycle—if the result would seem toadd to the impact of the poetry.

To complete the program, I have invited a very recent graduate,Elise Walters, to sing a few wonderful songs by the students frommy composition class last Spring.

The concert will start at 2:00 (late enough to give the CommunityChoir adequate time for its rehearsal). I hope you will, to remainat Church for the concert.

BEYOND CATEGORICAL THINKING

THINK OF A MINISTER. DON’T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT.

Chances are you thought of both. And distinct images perhapscame to mind. In terms of a minister, what images came tomind? Was it a person of a particular gender, race, or age?

Beyond Categorical Thinking is a highly recommended part of thesearch process for our congregation. In finding the person who wouldbe the best match for our minister, we could potentially overlook oreven let biases keep us from knowing that a particular person wouldbe the best match for us.

Other congregations have assumed that their ideal minister looks acertain way, and often ministers who are not white or male or hetero-sexual or able-bodied or of a particular age or class are discountedand seen as “less than” in some ways.

Ministers in our faith who are people of color, bisexual, gay, lesbian,female, transgender, differently-abled, young, old, ethnically different,or of a different class—all of these credentialed ministers still facediscrimination as part of the ministerial search process.

In our efforts to find the best match, our congregation will host aBeyond Categorical Thinking worship service and workshop on Sunday,

October 28, 2018. We will have trainers come and meet with oursearch committee, lead the Sunday service, and facilitate a 3-hourconversation where will have a chance to examine how we can avoidletting prejudice become a part of our search process. This is yetanother way for us to put our faith into lived experience and improvethe odds that regardless of identity, we will find the minister who isthe best match for us and will serve us well

This opportunity allows the entire congregation fuller participation inthe search process. It will allow us to explore our hopes and concernsfor a new minister, learn more about the search process, and see howour own history (both personal and congregational) might interferewith our efforts in this search.

So come on Sunday, October 28 to participate in this service providedby the UUA, whom our congregations have asked for help in thisprocess.

On Friday June 15, 2018 Community Church members commemorated Juneteenth. After a dinner contributed and prepared with the assistance of Esther Rosado, Faye

Bennett Lord and other volunteers we enjoyed a full program. Wecreated related art work in remembrance of June 19, 1865 whenslaves in Texas were notified they were free and that the civil war

had ended months before. The program included an openingblessing and homage to our ancestors led by Stephen AyoAdeyinka (with assistance from Tumani Diop), poetry from SandyBrooks and Lucille McEwen, a dramatic reading by Eric Colemanand song lead by Leeolive Tucker, Charlotte Eley and Tumani Diop.

New Organizations

Bailey’s Café Bailey's Café’s mission is to connect generations for a betterworld. The grant was requested to sustain and expand theirmultigenerational programs. They accomplish this by offeringcreative and collaborative and productions through partnershipswith local leaders and intergenerational volunteers. They offerspecial programs that reach underserved communities. Some ofthese programs are FAM – a Saturday Family Arts Movementprogram, MFTP – Music for the People intergenerational work-shops, Bubbly Moon naturals – a new mothers' workshop, andAQAIK ( As Quiet as its Kept) an oral history workshop for veter-ans of color.

Educating Every Child Educating Every Child empowers girls to build lives of dignityand self-reliance. EDC believes that education empowers youngpeople to improve their lives and work for the betterment of theirfamilies and their communities. Currently, fifteen girls per yearare assisted. It was founded in 2011 by a former UU-UNC execu-tive director EDC provides scholarships to impoverished adoles-cent girls, most of whom are orphaned and residing in ManyaKrobo district of Ghana, an area where there are no free highschools.

New Amsterdam Boys and Girls ChoirAmsterdam Boys and Girls Choir was established in 1986. Itperforms songs to inspire and educate with focus on the historyof the Civil Rights struggle and social justice. Members aredrawn from one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods of EastHarlem. The organization seeks to stress the value of workingtogether. It focuses on teaching leadership and other skills toaid the children to feel they can develop personal empowermentby bonding through singing in a group.

If American KnewIf Americans Knew was founded by American freelance journalistAlison Weir who found in her own exploration that the US

press often gives incomplete or biased accounts of what is actually happening, particularly, relative to the Palestine-Israeliconflict. IFK produces informational materials, assists in organizing public forums, prepares materials for distributionand provides speakers to hundreds of venues such as HarvardLaw School, Stanford and Columbia Universities as well as tochurches, libraries, and civic organizations. The aim is encour-age open and honest discussion and provide citizens with morecomprehensive information.

During this past summer, John Devaney presented a solo show, TheSwimmers Return, at Robert Foster Fine Art in Nantucket MA.

John Connors will be showing in February with the Leslie LohmanMuseum at the “project Space “ on Prince St.

Two of Patricia Garbarini’s photographs were accepted for exhibitsat Salmagundi Club on Fifth Avenue. One was awarded a Certificateof Merit in the Spring show and another was accepted for their summer exhibit.

Denise Fryburg taught a drawing workshop in July and has beenexhibiting throughout the year at the Art Society of Kingston.

Three of Peter Robinson’s photographs will be exhibited in anupcoming group show at La Vie Galerie in Livingston, NJ. The galleryis being opened to share the work of the various creative people heowner has come across in the past few years.

The “Year of the Dog” was the inspiration for the 19 annual DogShow at Mascot Studio in NYC where Bev Thompson exhibited twodog portraits and enjoyed a sale!

Virginia Asman has been re-styling her AncientWorks series—artinspired by ancient and prehistoric peoples around the world—for afall/winter exhibit at Art On Barcelona, Santa Fe, NM.

TIME SERVED! — A NEW START HAD A SUCCESSFUL OPENING INSEPTEMBER. The exhibit featured art exploring the issue of overcom-ing the challenges facing those released from prison who are seek-ing new beginnings in the larger community. The exhibit, coincidingwith a conference—also focusing on life after incarceration—heldat Community Church in October by the Community Service Society

(CSS), a 175-year-old anti-poverty organization that aims to “raisethe floor for all New Yorkers.” The exhibit will also include the art ofconference participants—Denisha Wright, Pastor Isaac Scott—andother guest artists in addition to Gallery35 artists.
