TIDBITS® TAKES

FLIGHTby Janet Spencer

On June 25, 1953, Horace C. Boren became the fi rst passenger to fl y around the world on commercial airlines in less than 100

hours. Come along with Tidbits as we take fl ight!

EARLY PIONEERS• The Wright brothers were not the fi rst people to fl y a plane.

Seven years prior to their 1903 fl ight, Samuel Pierpont Langley’s 16-foot (4.8 m) plane travelled three quarters of a mile (1.2 km) and stayed aloft for a minute and a half. The Wright’s claim to fame was that they made the fi rst fl ight that carried a human. Langley’s plane was unmanned.

• The world’s fi rst fatal airplane crash occurred in 1908 when a propeller broke, sending the aircraft plunging 150 feet (45 m) to earth. The pilot escaped with a broken leg, but the single passenger, Lt. Thomas Selfridge of the U.S. Signal Corps, was killed on impact. The pilot was Orville Wright.

• Many people mistakenly think Charles Lindbergh made the fi rst transatlantic fl ight. Actually, he made the fi rst solo transatlantic fl ight, but many other transatlantic fl ights were made prior to his May 20-21, 1927 solo fl ight. For instance, there was Capt. John Alcock and Lt. EARLY PIONEERS cont’d• When Capt. Alcock and Lt. Brown fl ew from

Canada to Ireland, they took with them Lucky Jim and Twinkletoes— two stuffed black cats, for luck. However, these “lucky” charms didn’t do much good. First, a super-heated exhaust pipe disintegrated. Then a blinding fog moved in and the plane would have taken a nose dive into the Atlantic if the fog hadn’t cleared 100 feet above the sea. Next, ice formed over the instruments on the wing after a snowstorm and Lt. Brown had to climb out on the wing to chip it off. But in spite of it all, the two men landed safely. Unfortunately, Alcock was killed six months later while fl ying in a fog in a Paris air show. Brown subsequently swore off fl ying forever, but his pilot son was killed in World War II.

• President Wilson and other important offi cials gathered in May of 1918 to witness the take-off of the fi rst airmail fl ight. The plane was to carry mail from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia. After take-off, the plane somehow went off course and landed in Waldorf, Maryland— which is farther away from Philadelphia than Washington is. The mail was eventually delivered by train.

• In 1938 Howard Hughes fi lled his plane with ping-pong balls so it would fl oat if it went down over the ocean. He then proceeded to set the speed record for fl ying around the world.

• On March 2, 1949, a U.S. Superfortress bomber completed the fi rst nonstop fl ight around the world when it landed at Fort Worth, Texas. The plane traveled 23,452 miles (37,742 km) in 94 hours and 1 minute. It was refueled four times in fl ight.

• In 1986, the Voyager accomplished the fi rst round-the-world fl ight without refueling. Cruising at a speed between 65 and 120 mph (104 – 194 km/hr) at an altitude of 8,000 to 10,000 feet (2,500 – 3,000 m) it took pilots Rattan & Yeager 216 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds to travel 25,012 miles (40,252 km).

Feline Quotes and Sayings: “Cats have 9 lives!” What an amazing

theme on living on the ‘wild side’.

2 Bad Diseases Just Got Better Hyperthyroidism and Diabetes are the number 1 and number 2 endocrine diseases seen in the cat. One is curable and the other can be treated more effectively. Thirty years ago these diseases were rarely seen but suddenly they both have emerged to become major feline diseases.

The cause of Hyperthyroidism is multi-factorial with environmental changes, stress and diet leading the list of possible inciting factors. Recently there has been a causal relationship to link polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE‛s) as a possible cause. In the late 1970‛s the EPA mandated that these compounds be used in furniture, carpets and curtains as fi re retardants. Shortly thereafter Feline Hyperthyroidism was fi rst seen affecting cats. All hyperthyroid cats appear to have elevated levels of PBDE‛s in their blood and thy-roid tissue. Is this the cause or are there combinations of conditions necessary to be present for the disease to manifest itself? More research may lead to the answer.

The good news is that all forms of Hyperthyroid-ism in humans and cats can be cured with radio-iodine therapy. It is a cost effective way to kill the abnormal thyroid cells and cure the disease. Medical treatment can be used short term but it only masks the disease and the tumor continues to grow. It is wise to treat for a cure!

Feline Diabetes has been a diffi cult disease to treat because the cause is unknown but environmental fac-tors and high carbohydrate diets have been incriminat-ed. A cat‛s diabetes differs from human and dog dia-betes in that the cat can become “transient diabetic”. The “transient diabetic” cat will be diabetic for a few weeks, then it‛s pancreas will start secreting insulin and the cat is no longer diabetic. A while later the cat will become diabetic again. Feline diabetes is linked with a sick pancreas and insulin resistance.

The good news is that a new form of an old insulin (PZI) has been introduced and it seems to regulate the cat‛s blood glucose levels better. Add to this the ability of owners to do home glucose curves, and diabetic regulation has taken a big jump forward. The cure for diabetes may be the next step with genetic engineering of pancreatic replacement cells.

Ruby: TheKing of Gems

For thousands of years the ruby has been consid-ered the undisputed ruler in the world of gems with many hailing it the “King of Gemstones”! It has beautiful color, exceptional hardness, and a brilliance fit for a king’s crown making it one of the most valuable gemstones on earth, able to bring as much or more than a diamond of comparable size. The most important feature of a ruby is its color with its transparency being of secondary importance. Inclusions, the solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed within in a ruby, will not prejudice the quality of a ruby unless they diminish its transparency or are located right in the center of its table. Inclusions can even increase the value of a ruby because it is consid-ered a fingerprint of the stone providing evidence of individuality and giving proof that it is of natural origin. The most important ruby deposits in the world are found in the small town of Mong Hsu in the North-East of Myanmar (Southeast Asia). Deposits are also found in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania with minor deposits in other places around the world including Montana and North Carolina. Beware of many imitations on the market, especially glass imitations and doublets (counterfeit gems made of two pieces, either of smaller gemstones, inferior stones, or glass). If you find the perfect ruby, may I suggest you buy it! It will cost you a small fortune but will bring you great pleasure, and will be an investment well worth keeping.

Colorado Yard Water PlayMake Your Own Backyard Water Park! Now that the kids are on summer break, it’s time to start enjoying this Colorado weather. While the air conditioner is always a welcome treat on a hot day, nothing beats playing outside in the water. No need to pack up for a day at the beach – water play can be just as fun at home in your own yard.

Sprinklers

Sprinklers have long been considered much more than a simple lawn watering device. In fact, these easy-to-install tools provide hours of outdoor fun on a hot day. Set up your sprinkler in an open space in your yard, as this will allow for extra running room as the kids jump through the spouts of water. As a bonus, your lawn will receive some much-needed moisture in the process.

The Hose

Go back to basics and cool down with your outdoor hose. For added fun, attach a multi-function nozzle that will allow for various levels of spray intensity. Many nozzles nowa-days include mist, sprinkler, and jet functions that kids love.

Mini Pool

Who says adults can’t cool off in a mini backyard pool? Climb on in with your kids and splash around. Most stores keep kiddie pools in stock once the spring hits, so you’ll have no trouble fi nding one that fi ts the size of your yard. Worried about getting a sun burn? Set up a beach umbrella at the side of your pool to escape harmful UV rays.

Water Balloons

There’s nothing quite like an old-fashioned water balloon fi ght. Give each participant a bucket full of balloons to use and go wild. Specialty balloons designed for water can be found at many party/toy stores, so be sure to ask around.

Slip ‘n’ Slide

Who doesn’t like a slip ‘n’ slide? The more intricate, the better! Go all out and purchase a set from your local home or kids’ store. These often come complete with side bump-ers, mini pools, and even water jets in some cases. Or, save a few dollars and build one yourself using heavy plastic and pool noodles (optional). CLICK HERE for DIY tips

Water Table

Remember the water table from kindergarten? It was al-ways the most popular play station, and it’s easy to see why. Complete with tubs of water, buckets, fl oat toys, and even bubbles in some cases, water tables can provide hours of outdoor fun. Simply set up bins of water on a fl at table in a shaded area and enjoy!

With the help of H20 and a little imagination, you’ll be on your way to a home built Colorado backyard water park in no time.

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Why Is My Breath STINKY? …….. and What Can I Do About It? (Part 1)

Q. What Is Halitosis (aka “Stinky Breath”)?A. Halitosis, is commonly known as “Bad Breath”. A recent study in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Journal, General Dentistry, defi nes Halitosis as a term to de-scribe “any disagreeable odor of expired air”. Bad (or Stinky) Breath “is a generally-accepted term for foul smells emanat-ing from the mouth.” Over 80 million people (and those nearby!) suffer from chronic bad breath.

Q. What causes “Stinky Breath”?A. Lots of things: Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease), wastes from bacteria, decay of food particles and other debris, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, stomach problems, and a sinus condition called “post nasal drip”. Bacteria (“bugs”) feast on the banquet of tiny (but huge to the bugs) food particles stuck in tongue crevices, between the teeth or under the gums. In just a matter of time these voracious bugs have to go to the bathroom, and they then “poop and pee” right there on your tongue, teeth, and gums! The result - more stinky waste prod-ucts known as “Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC’s). Sticky post nasal drip from the sinuses slides down the throat, coats the back of the tongue, and becomes a smelly layer of bacteria-loaded mucous and stinky VSC’s. Another obvious cause of “stinky breath” is smoking. Smok-ers Breath comes from the stinky air expired from the lungs, which then bathes across the nicotine-saturated oral tissues before being expired.

Q. Do certain foods cause “Stinky Breath”?A. Yes: Stinky-breath foods include the obvious: garlic, onions, very spicy foods, and coffee. These can be detected on one’s breath up to 72 hours after ingestion. I don’t know why anybody would want to do this, but I’ve “heard” that just moments after rubbing garlic on the soles of your feet, the garlic smell is on your breath. (Anybody want to try that experiment, and let me know the results?)

Q. Why do I have “morning breath” when I get up?A. Dry Mouth is a big reason for Morning Breath. Saliva is a key ingredient in the mouth that helps keep odor under control by helping wash away food particles and bacteria. During sleep, organ systems, including the salivary glands, slow down. Reduced production of saliva allows bacte-ria to multiply inside the mouth. Ever notice parts of your mouth sticking together when you wake up? That’s the “dry mouth” condition caused when the salivary glands go to sleep. Skipping breakfast, being hungry, or fasting can also cause dry mouth and morning breath. Breakfast skippers beware: Morning Mouth can reappear even after brushing your teeth. Remember to listen to your mother when she told you to NOT SKIP BREAKFAST!

Q. Are there other conditions that cause stinky breath?A. Yes: Infection, either in the mouth or elsewhere can cause halitosis. Other culprits include diabetes, liver malfunction, tobacco and alcohol use, certain medications and medical conditions that cause dry mouth (Xerostomia). Stress, diet-ing, snoring, aging, and hormonal changes can also cause stinky breath.
