From the Principal Recognising student achievement
On 9 September the state final of Tournament of
Minds (TOM) was held at Ogilvie. We were delighted
with the final result. Three of our teams achieved
Tournament Honours and Ogilvie were winners in the
four secondary categories of Language Literature,
Social Sciences, Science Technology and Engineering
Mathematics. These four winning teams will now head
to Adelaide in October to compete in the Australasian
Pacific Finals. This is not only the best result for
Ogilvie and a school in Tasmania, it is the best result
for a school in the history of Tournament of Minds.
Congratulations to all involved in TOM!
We also learned this week that our School Robocup team performed extremely well at the Nationals
held in Brisbane. Out of twelve teams in their category they finished in the top five in the preliminary
rounds and made it into the final. They then finished fourth overall (just outside of the medals).
Accompanying staff reported that the students were extremely well behaved, polite, and organised
and a pleasure to tour with.
We received similar reports from Rotary about the excellent behaviour of our Year 10s at RYDA.
Some of our students were recognised for their achievements in the Science Investigation Awards. A
news piece is featured in In Touch by teacher Jann Baxter. We also congratulate Remy. Remy, one of
our Head Prefects, has been offered a place in the 2017/18 Curious Minds program. Remy is one of
60 female secondary students coming together nationally for an exciting program of learning in
Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics and
Physics. We wish Remy the very best with this opportunity.
Congratulations to one of our talented music students, Vittoria. Vittoria won both the junior and
senior champion of champion woodwind soloist awards at the state competition on Saturday the 9
September. Vittoria is a talented flute and piccolo player and some of you may have heard her
perform at the Grade 6 Parent Information Evening held in August.
Ogilvie ex-scholars achieving excellence
Earlier in the year we learned that Irene achieved dux of Elizabeth College (Years 11-12) and Alice
was named dux of Year 11. We were also recently alerted to the success of Abbie and Josie. Abbie
achieved dux of her class, and Josie was runner-up dux, in the 2017 Tasmanian Police Force
Graduation. This is a wonderful achievement and the Ogilvie community wishes all past scholars the
very best in their studies and chosen career paths. If you are an ex-Ogilvie student who has achieved
success, or you know of someone who has, please get in touch with us. In 2017 we are celebrating
80 years as a school and will continue to share these success stories via our newsletter and social
media presence.
End of Term
In conclusion, I’d like to thank staff and students for all of their hard work this term. We celebrated
the Walkathon last week and many of our achievements in the final term assembly. This week we see
House Dance rehearsals and performances come to a conclusion. It has been a productive term of
learning where our values of character, community and growth have shone through. On behalf of the
school, I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break.

Grade 10 Social
On Thursday 21 September
the Year 10s had their last
social. There were many
awesome and interesting
costumes. Everyone made
the most of the night and had
great fun with their friends as
it was our last OHS Social.
All of the girls made the
most of the photo booth.
Thank you to all Staff and the
Year 9 SRC Representatives
for their hard work and
assistance.

Footy Colours Day &
Walkathon
On Friday 22 September all
students and staff walked to raise
funds for ‘beautifying’ the school.
Students made a gold coin
donation to wear footy or other
sports colours and are still able
to collect sponsorship for the
walk. Sponsorship forms and
money are due back at school by
Friday 21 October. The classes
raising the most money will earn
a whole-class reward. Students
walked approximately 8km from school, along the bike track to
the Tasman Bridge and back. Back at school, there were sports
activities and a staff vs students football match which the staff
won in convincing fashion. As well, canteen staff and student
helpers held a barbecue. Profits from this will be added to the
other money raised. Thank you to parents and families, the
Hobart City Council, staff and students for your support.

UTAS Science Investigations
On Thursday 14 September, 10 Grade 9 students attended the UTAS annual
Science Investigation Awards Judging Day. Other than one entry from Kingston
High we were the only state school. We had 3 teams entered.
1. Mehak, Celine, Karuna and Kasandra, with “Which milk sours the quickest”
2. Ambaynesh, Arielle and Tianna, with “The sugar content and pH level of
different colas”
2. Holly and Evie with “The Oil Spill Challenge”
The students conducted their investigations at school over the past term and then
displayed their results on special presentation boards.
The team of Holly and Evie were awarded an honourable mention in the total 9th
Grade category. Their display was very creative.
All of the students were very well behaved and a credit to the school. They
thoroughly enjoyed the day where they were able to look at all other
presentations. They are all excited about
entering the competition again next year
with even better investigations. It is our
intention to have many more entries in
the awards next year. It is a very valuable
experience.

White Ribbon Day
Head Prefects and the Z Club Executive attended a discussion about the prevention of violence against women, past and present and
respectful relationships at the Treasury Courthouse on Wednesday 27 September. The girls were impressed with the speakers; The
Hon Elise Archer, Speaker of the House of Assembly and a representative for Rob Williams, Deputy Secretary, Department of
Education, spoke of the positive changes in the campaign of violence against women. The speeches were directed at the students in the
courthouse and entrusting these young people with the responsibility of the future of this campaign. Ms George Jarvis and Mrs Michelle
Hudspeth accompanied the girls to the impressive Courthouse setting, chosen deliberately to create an atmosphere of how women
have been treated in the past and to be encouraged that this plight is
changing and will continue to change into the future if our young
people learn to treat each other with respect and choose to develop
respectful relationships.
World Challenge Update
Our World Challenge group have spent a few days
exploring Siem Riep and soon will begin their project.
Accompanying staff report that all of the girls have
been fantastic and are enjoying the warm weather,
new foods and sights. The picture below is of
students at Angkor Wat.

RoboCup Australian Open Competition Brisbane 2017
The Ogilvie RoboSquad has been busy all year planning, designing and programing
robots to dance! They entered in the State Finals and won their section, this made
them eligible to compete at the national competition in Brisbane this year. Five
girls from the squad were able to attend.
We travelled up to Brisbane last Friday and competed over the weekend. The girls
and robots had the chance to dance in front of judges three times with the best
score being counted. The girls also have an interview about the design and
programing they have done to create the performance. The judges are especially
interested in innovation.
The Ogilvie RoboSquad were in the top five out of twelve teams and this meant they competed in the finals. Unfortunately not all the
robots performed to the best of their ability and they were not placed in the top three, but the girls were thrilled with the result of
their first national level competition and are already planning a bigger and better dance for 2018! The Squad includes; Elise , Marla ,
Mia , Zoe, and Thaga , (Alexa and Katarina part of the team but could not go to Brisbane). The girls were a credit to themselves and
the school, conducting themselves with maturity and self-reliance throughout the weekend. Thank you to the following sponsors:
Active Electronics Components sponsored the team t-shirts, The Hon Elise Archer MP, Sunshine Association and The Hon. Matthew
Groom MP.
