Hunt, Lee Brice, The Raging Idiots, Cole Swindell, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert, in that order, performed short sets. The Idiots played two songs, ZBB topped out at seven. Notable moments included the debut of FGL’s “H.O.L.Y.”, Chris Young and Cassadee Pope on their new chart-topper, ZBB’s cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” and Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann rolling out “A Little More Love.” “The artists are so great at doing all the associated things from meeting with listeners to advertiser integrations,” Phillips says. “Even if there’s a question mark at management coming in, by the time they get here everybody is just in. They do what it takes to get it done and move on.” New this year and where Phillips was most involved was the Daytime Village on a plaza outside the Frank Erwin Center. Performing were Chris Lane, Maren Morris, Granger Smith, LoCash and the aforementioned Idiots. Opening at 3pm, the plaza featured food trucks, vendors, merch tents, a mechanical bull ride and sponsor activations

including Flonase, Aaron’s and Firestone. Within 30 minutes, the standing area in front of the stage was full. Fifteen minutes later, the call came over the radio that the Austin fire marshal was closing the plaza. From that point forward, hundreds formed in two lines hoping to get in as others exited, or gathered around the fence line to listen and watch. “You never know with a free show if people will come stand in the Austin sun to take it in,” says Phillips, who was relieved to only see one person pass out from the Texas heat and humidity. “There’s the concern you’re going to have 500 people and a lot of empty space. But we had a great up-and-coming lineup of artists and had to turn people away.” An expanded village is likely next year, but the question is where. The Frank Erwin Center is slated for demolition. “I’ve heard it’s eventually coming down,” Phillips says. “They’ve been doing construction around it for two years now, but we don’t have official word.” Backstage, speculation was that iHeart will have to find a new home in 2017. Wherever it’s held, the iHeartCountry Festival is now fully Phillips’ responsibility after the 2016 slate was put together by his predecessor, Clay Hunnicutt. “That starts immediately,” Phillips says. “In fact, [National Programming Platforms President] Tom Poleman and I have been talking about that since about midnight Saturday. What do we do next?” Certainly, the plan includes continued focus on the festival as a platform cornerstone. “A marquee event like this helps to build the iHeartCountry brand, but it’s only important if it helps the local stations build their image,” Phillips says. “That’s why we do it. It’s about being an iHeartCountry station meaning something, having something special to provide the listener. Otherwise, it’s just one show in one town.” Watch this year’s festival on AT&T’s Audience Network May 13 at 9pm ET. –Chuck Aly

UPDATE

KVOO/Tulsa's Greg Mozingo discusses his most influential music:1. Rod Stewart & Aerosmith: There are two concerts I attended because they were my wife Kim's favorite: Rod Stewart in Columbia SC in the '90s and Aerosmith in Memphis in 2002. She is a huge fan and both shows were absolutely fantastic. 2. Best of Eddie Rabbitt: Before

college I had very little exposure or a taste for country music. A Sigma Chi fraternity brother introduced me to his 8-track copy of Rabbitt's '70s hits. "Rocky Mountain Music" was the first song I ever played as a Country DJ on WLWI/Montgomery, AL in 1981. 3. Journey's Escape: I'm a big fan of the band. I recall buying Escape on vinyl in the summer of 1981. Then later, on cassette, CD, and i-Tunes. The icing on the cake was when "Don’t Stop Believing" from that album was used in the final Sopranos episode. Sweet.4. Randy Travis' Storms of Life: In my opinion, the Neo-Traditional movement led by Randy was a big deal for Country radio and set up the country boom of the '90s and a stretch of time in radio that was very fun to be a part of. 5. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours: The soundtrack of my high school years. It seems like they were on the radio all the time. And of course Stevie Nicks with her skirts, shawls and platform boots was way cool – and hot. • A highly regarded song or album you've never heard: The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. • "Important" music you just don't get: David Bowie's Life on Mars.• An album you played incessantly: Eagles Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975).• Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Kenny Chesney's "Tin Man." A great song and performance that was released twice but never a hit. The first time, Kenny was unknown, and the second time was during the "pop country" boom. A traditional sound that might work now.• Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I own every album by the Carpenters.

Chart Chat Congrats to Chris Young, Cassadee Pope, Keith Gale, Matthew Hargis and the RCA and Republic Nashville promotion departments on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “Think Of You.” The song is the second chart-topper from Young’s I’m Comin’ Over album, and Pope’s first No. 1. Extra kudos to Hargis and the gang, who may have problems, but 99 aren’t one. Florida Georgia Line’s “H.O.L.Y.” registered that many adds today, topping this week’s board.

Find out what turns somebody’s crank, what excites them, and the interview almost takes care of itself.” (Find Walters’ book here).

Not prepping is the other option. “There are radio people who pride themselves on going in not knowing anything,” Simbeck concedes. “’My thing,’ they’ll say, ‘is to go in fresh like my listener would and learn as I go.’ And those invariably are the absolute worst possible interviews.” Comfy Counts: Larry King received a note from Frank Sinatra after a rare and revealing interview with the singer that read, “You make the camera disappear.” “When

the interview subject has confidence in the interviewer, they’ll go anywhere with them,” King has said of their conversation. The importance of putting guests at ease can’t be overlooked. Enter a little interview radio foreplay. “I’ve seen Bob do this,”

Simbeck recalls. “We had an album release special on George Strait coming up and had a lot of time with him. They talked horses for the first 10 or 15 minutes. It was just Bob’s way of making sure George was in the groove. There are people like George and Alan [Jackson] who are great about getting information out, but who you really have to work with as interview subjects. You need to engage them.” To that end, “authentic and genuine always wins,” Ford promises. “That’s not to say you should walk in before the interview and say, ‘Look, I didn’t have a lot of time and I don’t know anything about you.’ That’s insulting. Approach it like you’ve just sat down with them at a coffee shop or bar. It’s just about finding common ground and getting people to trust you. Maybe it’s taking a shot or telling a joke – just genuine human interaction.” “I want them to get into a cadence of conversation,” Dent adds. “I knew in a recent interview, for example, that Martina McBride was really comfortable when she said, ‘Well shit, Lisa!’ If you can get them to forget they’re on the air and to think they’re just talking to you like they’re a friend, then you’ve got it!” Specifically Authentic: Friends listen. “If you’re listening, you’ll hear something that sparks the follow-up question that’s so important,” Ford says. “A lot of people make the mistake of not asking questions at all, but leading their guests through [the guest’s] own story, which doesn’t leave much for them to say in response. It’s more of a ‘I did all my research and this is what I know about you.’ It throws them off.” Specificity is key. “That’s what sparks stories in interviews,” Simbeck argues. “Things like knowing their kids’ names and that

they just had a birthday. Then you can ask about the birthday party, for example.” General topics can solicit interesting content, but the questions have to be framed properly. “Maybe you found out that they liked a certain artist as a kid,” Simbeck continues. “You might ask which album or when they would put it on. Was it when they were happy? Sad? In the truck? What? The more specific you get, the better chance you have of sparking something in them.” Dent has basically benchmarked the approach. “I started something called Lisa’s Last Question,” she explains. “I’ll ask, ‘What’s the last thing you bought your mom that cost over $5,000?’ They know the answer to that. Then you get an answer that gives you questions two, three and four.” Be authentic, Ford contends. “I assume other country fans are like I am,” she says. “Sometimes we want to hear an artist’s take on things we’re talking about with our friends. I almost want to hear every artists’ take on the presidential campaign right now. I’m not looking for a big, long opinion, but what do they think? That’s how you get a feel for who someone is and that makes you want to root for them.” To Tape or Not to Tape: That is the question. PPM has changed the game in many respects, but air talent still have their preferences. “I love live,” Ford insists. “If I can overthink something, I will, and I’ll re-do it over and over again if I’m able. Live is do or die, so there’s extra incentive for both the artist and myself to do a good job. Subconsciously they’re thinking what I’m thinking: We’re jumping out of the plane, so we’d better pull the parachute. Unfortunately, radio doesn’t quite lend itself to live anymore.” Dent is all about that tape – no rip cord. “I like tape simply because I want it to be great,” she says. “And I want to keep it quick. I’m only going to air three minutes of an interview, so it better be the three best minutes. That said, we recently had Eric
