Hello from 6th grade math. We will be moving onto Variables and Patterns. During our examination of this book, your 6th grader will study some basic ideas of algebra and learn some ways to use those ideas to solve problems and make deci-sions. Stuck on a concept at home? Have your 6th grader tune into our web pages. There, you can links to our book and some basic homework tips. Also, give Khanacademy.org a visit- use the site to find a multitude of videos and practice problem sets that are free to use! Please visit the CMP website (http://connectedmath.msu.edu/) for program help/tips.

Science with Mrs. Agnew and Mrs. Smith

Math – In Math 7, students will be studying from the book, What Do You Expect? Students will gain an understanding of experimental and theoretical probabilities and the relationship between them. The Unit also makes important connec-tions between probability and rational num-bers, geometry, statistics, science, and busi-

ness.

Language Arts –In March, students will write and deliver an

argumentative speech with a multi-media presentation around a global issue they have researched. During presentations, they will work on tracing and evaluating a speaker’s argument. Students will also begin reading dystopian novels for their 3rd quarter Litera-

ture Discussion Groups.

Social Studies - In Social Studies, we will be finishing our Civil War unit by examin-ing both tactical and cultural issues that led to Union victory. Emphasis will be put on total war tactics used on southern cities and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. We will conclude March by examining Reconstruction and its effects on race relations in the south.

Science -In science students will be completing a unit in

geology. Their final project will be to design and create an informative website that deals with a topic relating to fossils and paleontolo-gy. Students will then begin a new unit on

physics. This lab-based unit focuses on the concepts of mo-tion, force, and energy.

FINS has chosen to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma So-ciety for this year’s community fundraiser. From April 6-17 we will be holding a Pennies for Patients collection. Start look-ing for loose change now! It doesn’t have to be pennies...all coins and cash count! More information will be coming home in April or you can learn more at PenniesForPa-tients.org. Mark your calendars for our last Activity Night of the year: Friday, April 17 from 6:00-8:00pm.

The Southern Lakes Anthology (SLA) Project is sponsored by the Southern Lakes Advanced Learners Network. The purpose of SLA is to provide an opportunity for talented writers, artists, and cartoonists in 3rd through 8th grade to publish their work. In the category of prose: Analisa Boshart Samantha Mallin

In the category of art: Angella Nguyen Evanna Thao

In addition, the artwork of Evanna Thao will be featured on the

back cover of the anthology. Congratulations to these middle

school writers and artists!

This month for FBLA, or Future Business Leaders of America, we are currently signing up and preparing for the state competition. Recently, we also competed at Regionals in Menomonee Falls, WI and placed 2nd overall. All 13 of our 20 members who partic-ipated -- Maren Selle, Leah Kincaid, Jackson Leibman, Abbey Michalak, Nora Nelson, Georgia Diagne, Ashlyn Wadsworth, Mi-kayla Cropp, Alex Lembrich, Ellie Christianson, Meredyth Cluver, and Lizzie Adelmeyer -- placed in at least one of their events. Congratulations! We will now be practicing to get ready for the State competition in Madison after spring break. Good luck! Our February FBLA lesson was on the topic of credit. We learned about the advantages of using credit and about credit scores. We were taught some of the ways people can decrease their credit scores and ways to increase it. Thank you to all of our speakers from Badger Bank, Fort Community Credit Union, and SDFA for coming to talk to us about credit.

The FBLA lesson for March is on ethics where we will learn about what ethics is, how to follow ethics, and how to become suc-cessful in business doing that.

Algebra Students will continue to study from Chapter 7, Ex-ponential Functions. This chapter provides an op-portunity for students to learn more about the family of exponential functions. Students will also build more advanced algebra skills, such as solving for an indicated variable, simplifying or rewriting exponential expressions, working with fractional exponents, and finding the exponential function that passes exactly through any pair of given points. Students will begin Chapter 8, Quadratic Functions. In this chapter, a quadratics web will challenge students to find connections between the different representations of a quadratic function. Through this endeavor, students will learn how to rewrite quadratic equations in several forms, and how to use a graphing calculator or Desmos to assist them. Math 8 Students will continue investigating from the book, Growing, Growing, Growing. This book continues the discussion of functions by examining exponential functions. Models of exponential growth and decay are numerous such as growth or decay of populations—from bacteria, amoebas, radioactive material and money, to mammals (including people). Doubling, tripling, halving, and so on, are all intuitive situ-ations for students to help them make sense of exponential func-tions. Then students will start the book Say It With Symbols. This book develops the understanding of using symbolic expressions to represent and reason about relationships. The students will write and interpret equivalent expressions, combine expressions to form new expressions, predict patterns of change represented by an equa-tion or expression, and solve equations. Language Arts

Students are learning about the concept of Moderniza-tion through the reading of Traditional and Modern Literature, focusing on how modern literature has been rendered new. In the second half of the quarter, stu-dents will be working in small groups to research one side of a modern argumentative topic which will then

be used in a debate. Students should continue reading regularly outside of class. Science Students will begin their third and final unit of the school year with a unit on environmental science. The focus of the unit will be on the factors that living things require, how they obtain them, and how the various populations within an area interact and influence one another. We will also discuss how humans fit into this picture and how our success is tied to the success of other species and environments. Western Cultural Studies

Students will be finishing up the general Latin America unit and begin to look more closely at the regions and indi-vidual countries of Latin America. We will examine the history, culture, governments, and economies for these countries. The Latin America unit will conclude with a

unit test. We’ll begin our last unit, which will cover Europe, at the start of 4th quarter.

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of stu-dents by developing premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

We’re excited to be hosting author Andrew Maraniss at FAMS on Tuesday, April 7th. Maraniss is a sports writer, but his books are unique because they shine a light on the connection between sports and social issues. While his new book is about the inven-tion of basketball and the first US Olympic basketball team, it also dives deep into the controversy of that particular Olympics, the 1936 games in Berlin. US Olympic officials whitewashed what the Nazis were already doing, and those who thought we should boycott the Olympics were accused of being disloyal to our country. It's a well-researched book and gives an interesting

perspective on those historic games.

The FAMS library will purchase copies of the book ($17.00 each) prior to the visit for any student who wants one. Maraniss will then autograph the books when he’s here. Order forms are available at school and are due with payment by Thursday, March 12th. Checks can be made payable to For t Atkinson Middle School. Go to andrewmaraniss.com for more infor-mation.
