Find your way out of smoking this year

Health professionals from the Health Improvement Team and Bridgewater Community NHS Trust in Halton and St Helens are urging smokers who are considering quitting in January to take advantage of free support to improve their health and save money. The message comes at a time when thousands of local smokers will aim to quit as part of their New Year’s resolutions. The call to quit follows a hard hitting national campaign by Public Health England which highlights the toxic effect of smoking on the heart, brain and lungs. The new campaign, supported by TV advertising, brings to life the toxic cycle of dirty blood caused by inhaling the dangerous chemicals in cigarettes, including arsenic and cyanide flowing through the body and damaging major organs. The chemicals move through the heart, the lungs and into the bloodstream, finally damaging cells in the brain. Free support is available to smokers from the NHS Stop Smoking Services in Halton and St Helens who can be contacted on: Halton 01928 593 043 St Helens 01744 814 837 Email: [email protected]

Health Chiefs in the borough welcome decision to ban smoking in cars carrying children

St Helens Council’s director of public health, Liz Gaulton. said:

“We’re delighted with the news that there will be a free vote in the House of Commons on protecting children from smoke in cars and from tobacco advertising through glitzy promotional features. This leads on from the successful St Helens smoke free homes and cars scheme.”

Dr Steve Cox, Chief Operating officer from St Helens Clinical commissioning group said

“Every day in surgery, doctors in St Helens see how smoking and second hand smoking blights the lives of local people and ruins their health and wellbeing. This is why the Clinical Commissioning group working with St Helens council and voluntary agencies wants to do something to help protect local people, particularly children from the effects of tobacco smoking”. Andrea Crossfield, Chief Executive of Tobacco Free Futures, which developed the award winning Take Seven Steps Out campaign in St Helens, said:

“There are already hundreds of thousands of people who smoke in the North West protecting their children from second-hand smoke by taking seven steps out – which involves moving well away from homes and buildings to smoke. “

There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, 60 of which cause cancer.

Opening windows or standing at the door doesn’t stop the toxic poisons contained in smoke filling a room or a car and children breathing it in.

"This campaign will remind people that smoking at home or in the car is harmful to children and they can take action to prevent this even if they are not ready to quit”. In the North West, second-hand smoke results in at least 34,000 GP consultations a year and over 1,100 hospital admissions.

Plans underway to deliver two new urgent care centres in Halton. Plans are now underway to extend urgent care services at Widnes Walk-in Centre and create a new Urgent Care Centre and Community Decision Unit at Halton Hospital in Runcorn. Designed by local doctors, the proposals have received strong support from local residents with (94%) of the 350 people who took part in a recent consultation survey either ‘Strongly agreeing’ or ‘Agreeing’ with the plans. The project, expected to be fully completed in September 2014, will enable patients to receive care closer to home whilst at the same time reducing pressures on busy A&E units at Warrington and Whiston Hospitals. Simon Banks, Chief Officer of NHS Halton CCG, said: “We are bringing medical care closer to

home for local people – building quality services that Halton residents can access immediately

when they need it, and taking away the worry and stress of travelling to Warrington or Whiston

A&E departments.”

We’ve been busy gathering your views, you can read a full report HERE.

From the end of January 2014 we will be holding a series of open sessions across the region at local cancer support groups and community venues. Feeling under the weather this winter?

Get help from your local Pharmacist, The Sooner,

The Better…

NHS leaders say “the earlier, the better” as they encourage residents to get help from their local pharmacy if they start to feel unwell Residents across Runcorn and Widnes are being encouraged to get help from their local pharmacist or go to www.nhs.uk/asap as soon as they start to feel unwell. NHS England has launched a new national public-awareness campaign called ‘The earlier, the better.’ in a bid to persuade people not to store up health problems and to seek advice early from their local community pharmacist or the NHS health website. This campaign aims to nip health problems in the bud and reduce the number of people requiring emergency hospital admissions with illnesses that could have been effectively treated earlier by self-care or community pharmacy services. NHS Halton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which is responsible for planning and buying health services for the people of Halton is backing the campaign. Simon Banks, Chief Officer of NHS Halton CCG, said: “Many people are not aware that they can get health and medicine advice from their local pharmacist. Expert help can be provided to residents for them to manage their long-term conditions or for ailments such as a bad cough, wheezing, a cold or sore throat. “Many pharmacies have longer opening hours than the average GP practice, and most have a private consultation area. If people need to see a doctor, they will be advised accordingly.” Professor Keith Willett, NHS England’s Director for Acute Care, said: “We see in our hospitals so many people who have not had or sought the help they need early enough. We have to do better at helping people stay well, not just picking up the pieces when they fall seriously ill. “Too many people make the mistake of soldiering on, losing the opportunity to nip things in the bud. Unfortunately this can lead to an unnecessary stay in hospital, particularly for the more frail elderly and those with long-term conditions.” To read the full article visit the Halton CCG website HERE

Widnes & St Helens NHS Walk-in Centers, helping people to ‘Choose Well’.

Staff from NHS Walk-In Centres in St Helens and Widnes have seen a busy festive period treating almost 4000 patients between them. This has significantly helped to ease the pressures on local accident and emergency departments. Christmas rounded off a busy year for the centres, which are run by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust (Bridgewater). Elaine McDowell, Walk-in Centre Clinical Services Manager for Bridgewater said: “Our staff have worked extremely hard over Christmas and the past year to provide high quality care, treating on average 203 patients a day**. We are keen to relieve some of the pressure on our local accident and emergency departments who need to prioritise patients with more serious and life-threatening conditions. As a result we want to encourage more people to consider visiting the centres in the coming year if they need assessment quickly for a minor injury or illness.” You can read a full report on the Widnes Centre’s Christmas provision HERE Read a full report on the St Helens Walk-in provision HERE Or click the Choose Well logo to find out more about your winter health care options.

screening by the NHS breast screening programme every

three years. Around one-and-a-half million women are

screened in the UK each year. Women over 73 can request a

screening unit.

In Halton however we will now screen women aged from 47 – 73, so if you receive a letter from your local GP

Practice, please don’t ignore it and think you’ve been sent it by mistake. Early detection is crucial in

saving lives!
