SACE MERIT CEREMONYOn Tuesday, 6th of February, I was privileged to attend the 2018 SACE Merit Ceremony at Government House to recognise the achievements of two of our 2017 Year 12 students, Liam Blake and Joonghoon Park. A SACE Merit is awarded as recognition of a perfect result in a Stage 2 subject. The ceremony, hosted by the Honourable Hieu Van Le, Governor of South Australia, recognises the achievements of Year 12 students in a range of subjects throughout South Australia.
Liam and Joonghoon were awarded Merits for their achievements in Research Project, on the topics of “To what extent can mathematical patterns and sequences be applied to the composition of Jazz?” and “To what effect does the urban layout of buildings and streetscapes in the Adelaide CBD contribute to making a successful, vibrant community?” respectively. Their successes in these fields will surely assist in their university studies this year, having enrolled in Mathematical Sciences (Advanced) and Architectural Design.
Congratulations to Joonghoon and Liam on their well-earned Merit Certificates, and all the best for the future!

LUNCHTIME FUN AT THE HEIGHTS IN 2018I am excited to begin my eighth year as Pastoral Care Worker at The Heights School. This year I will be running three Lunchtime Programs each week. These programs are opportunities for students across the school to be involved in fun, structured activities in their free time. All of these programs are offered at no cost to the students.
Wednesday Reception – Year 5 – BLAST Every Wednesday Junior School students are invited to participate in BLAST (in previous years this program was called FLAG: Friday Lunch and Games). Each week there is a short value lesson and at least two fun and active games. BLAST incorporates the Play is the Way Life Raft Concepts being taught in the Primary Years. Blast runs fortnightly for students in Reception – Year 2 and fortnightly for students in Year 3 – Year 6. It is made clear to students which week the program runs for their grade level.
Thursday Year 12 – Milkshake Lunchtime All Year 12 students are welcome to enjoy a chocolate, strawberry or caramel milkshake during Lunch on a Thursday. They can play with a selection of board games and card games, while relaxing and spending time with their friends. All this happens upstairs in the Senior School each Thursday during Lunchtime.
Friday Years 7 – 9 – Lunchtime Lounge All students in Years 7 – 9 are invited MG3 in the Middle School, during lunch. They can play on the Wii or with a selection of board games and card games. Milo and a delicious treat are provided for the students.
If you have any questions or suggestions about Lunchtime Programs at The Heights, please contact me via the Front Office on 8263 6244 or by email at [email protected].

GROWTH MINDSET - 601
In 601, we discussed Growth Mindset and how it compares with a Fixed Mindset, and what Growth Mindset might look like in the classroom. We discussed the differences between Fixed and Growth Mindsets.
People with a Fixed Mindset tend to:• Give up when things get difficult or they get frustrated• Assume people are either born good at things or not good at things• Avoid challenges• Feel like they are not smart if they fail at something• Feel a little threatened if another person is succeeding
People with a Growth Mindset tend to:• Persevere when things are difficult • Love challenges• Understand that when they fail, they are actually learning• Appreciate that struggle leads to growth• Are inspired when others succeed• Know they are capable of learning anything, even if it takes a little while to do this• Understand that it is effort and attitude that gets them places
As part of this task, students created some quotes to show their understanding. Some of these are included in this newsletter.

YEAR 6-9 SPLASH CARNIVAL
STAGE 2 AQUATICSIn Week 2, the Stage 2 Integrated Learning class completed a 3 day aquatics practical at West Lakes Aquatics Centre. Students were given the choice of Kayaking, Sailing or Windsurfing as the activity they focussed on for the full duration of lessons lead by DECD qualified instructors. This forms one of 3 practical inquiry tasks the class completes for the year and also is used to reinforce some of the concepts learnt in theory classes regarding skill acquisition.

On Wednesday 14th February the Year 6-9 Heights School Splash Carnival took place at Salisbury Swimming Centre. Students enjoyed an opportunity to participate in a range of Championship and Novelty Events, old favourites and new additions that encouraged participation and fun. Congratulations to all students on your participation in Splash Carnival. Both Year 8 Boys Teams represented The Heights School with determination and resilience against 12 other teams registered to compete at Mars Stadium on Monday the 19th February. Although both teams finished 6th in their division, their efforts weren’t reflected on the score board. With our Division 2 team claiming 1 win and our Division 1 team missing out on victory by 2-3 points in several matches. As the day progressed teams became more confident with each other’s playing ability which was reflected through several 3 pointers, 1v1 winning contests, mid court crossovers beating several defenders and collaboration on the court. Well done to all students who participated in the carnival. Eulaly Allen, Sports Coordinator

Secondary: Words won’t hurt
Online bullying can feel much worse than offline bullying.
What’s the issue?
Most online bullies are offline bullies too. Bullies often choose any small difference or something they think the person is concerned about as an excuse for bullying. With social media sites being accessible all day and night, it can feel like there is no safe place to escape from the bullying.
Why does it matter?
• Bullying often has long-term negativeeffects on people’s well being, bothemotionally and physically.
• It is even easier to spread lies and rumoursthrough social media than face-to-face.
• It is hard to stay connected to friends whenit means that bullies can get to you too.
• Research shows that boys most often bullyother boys and girls tend to bully girls but whena boy bullies a girl (or vice-versa) it can have avery strong impact because young people arestill developing and changing so muchphysically and emotionally.
Advice
Tell someone you trust
• Talk to someone you trust to help you work outsome strategies to stop the impact the bullyingis having on you. Sometimes your friends aren’tthe best people to seek help from, as they maynot have enough knowledge. Ask older siblingsor trusted adults to help and support you.
Report and gather evidence of the bullying
• Report the bullying to the peoplewho run the site you are using.
• Print out or make a copy of texts andscreen dumps so that you can showa trusted adult what is happening.
• Get help! You deserve to feel safeand to make your own choices.
Use privacy settings to lock out people you don’t trust or like
• Research privacy settings of the site. Makesure that you have activated the relevantsettings that are there to protect you.
• Bullies love to make you change yourbehaviours, and they would like to cut youoff from other people. Don’t let them!
