dLsZ Launches its Ruby Anniversary

The 40th Founding Anniversary of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School officially kicked off in Alabang and Vermosa Campus last July 2018.

Carrying the theme, Fortifying the Lasallian Animo: Living Jesus in our Hearts, the launching ceremonies were attended by students, parents, alumni, and Lasallian Partners.

“Animo means spirit; and for us in De La Salle, we hope to strengthen the Lasallian spirit in all of you. That spirit from God gives us strength to be able to fight any obstacles, challenges and difficulties that come our way,” shared Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC, DLSZ President, in his Lasallian message. “It is only through the spirit of love that we will be able to gain the strength to overcome all that try to stop us from doing what is good. So this year, with the students, teachers, staff, fellow administrators, alumni and

parents, let us be one to celebrate this fortifying spirit. Together, we are able to overcome many things and together we can overcome the trials and continue being achievers for God and country. May the Animo--the spirit--be with all of us. Animo La Salle!”

To ensure that the school’s legacy lives on, a Pledge of Commitment was recited. It was led by the representatives of the four major sectors - students, parents, alumni, and Lasallian Partners. Further, the 40 colorful years of DLSZ was showcased through a parade of 40 symbols/mementos of DLSZ.

Since the opening of classes, DLSZ has lined up activities to amplify the school’s Ruby year.

“I want to wake up in that city that doesn’t sleep, to find I’m the king of the hill, top of the heap…”. So goes the song New York, New York written by Fred Ebb in 1977.

This is exactly what happened to the forty-five delegates of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School during their Global Alternative Learning Experience in New York.

Composed of enthusiastic student-leaders, the selected group of Grades 7 to 12 young Lasallians participated in the first-ever GALE held last April 21 to May 1, 2018. It is a new program aligned with the Alternative Learning Experience program of the school

which aims to foster global citizenship and cultural exposure.

The group was able to experience K-12 curriculum at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York, Microsoft Sales Office visit in Manhattan, Broadway musical play, campus tour and student council interaction in La Salle University in Pennsylvania and Princeton University, a tour at the World Bank Headquarter in Washington D.C., and a visit to the famous landmarks such as the White House, Capitol Hill, and several Smithsonian Museums.A collaboration between the Student Clubs and Activities Office and the Educational Technology Unit, the

maiden GALE experience aimed to enrich specific academic lessons into more meaningful and tangible experiences to deserving students across the high school level.

Congratulations to all the GALE delegates! Animo La Salle!

inAKi eMiL LORBes (dLsZ 2020) JOins PHiLiPPine nATiOnAL TRiATHLOn TeAMBy Garry Domingo

It’s been two years since Aki first threw his lot in triathlons. In those two years, he has competed in more than a dozen races across the Philippines and around South East Asia. His performance in these tournaments have caught the attention of both his competitors, and even their coaches; this earned him his place among the up-and-coming triathletes of the country. But contrary to his almost meteoric rise, his start as a triathlete couldn’t be more different from other athletes of his youth.

Inaki Emil “Aki” Lorbes (DLSZ 2020) got his first taste of triathlons in 2016. His invitation came from a fellow swimmer’s parent during a weekend training for DLSZ’s swimming bid for the UAAP. It wasn’t anything special; it was simply a suggestion that Aki should try out for the Philippine Aquathlon Championship later that year. Aki was initially hesitant to try out for the tournament. He was already collecting medals and recognition in swimming while still having the room to become even better. He feared that despite swimming being part of the equation, he may end up appearing fish out of water.

It was Anton Tangan, the parent of a triathlete from DLSZ, who convinced Aki to finally join the Aquathlon Championship. The Philippine Aquathlon Champion was the first of a series of events required to enter the Youth Olympic Qualifying Games. To do well in the tournament would open a lot of doors for an aspiring athlete like himself. The new prospect of qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games made Aki realize what he can achieve. And with further support from his family and friends, Aki started his preparations for what would be one of his most defining moments.

The Philippine Aquathlon Championship was held in Camayan Beach Resort in Subic Freeport on September 2016. Athletes from around the country were gathered to kick off their bid for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers. Aki has met some of these athletes while most were unfamiliar to him. The face of new competition never deterred Aki as the challenge always pushed the best out of him. But what he did not expect was the participation of the National Triathlon Team. Aki knew that they represented the country because they were the best. This left him intimidated as he was there by himself, in his borrowed tri-suit from long-time coach Anthony Lozada, while the National Team’s yellow triathlon suits and their complete supporting equipment distinguished them from the rest of the group. Armed only with his training and his new-found dream of joining the Youth Olympic Games, he raced against the Philippines’ best.

Aki won the tournament, handily beating the entire Philippine National Triathlon team in a triathlon by placing first in the rankings. His first win and — his stellar swimming skills that edged any advantage his competitors might have over him — set off a series of triathlon placements together with a brand-new set of eyes that watched Aki’s performance all throughout.

Another big break would come for Aki when he was selected to represent the Philippines in the 2017 ASTC Championships in Palembang, Indonesia. The race in Indonesia became a new test for Aki as he was pit against the best of the region. He did not place at the top spots of the tournament, but it did expose Aki to a new level of competition and drove him to train even harder for his bigger goal: The Youth Olympic Qualifying Games.

When the time came for the Youth Olympic Qualifying Games on June 2018, Aki had already collected the points required for a spot. He has had the event in mind for the past two years and trained tirelessly to show his best for the qualifiers. As the event drew closer, a storm hit the waters of the Subic Freeport area where the qualifiers were being held. The waters for the games were deemed unsafe for the swimmers and the event officials removed swimming as part of the event. Even if his strongest sport was removed from the rest of the tournament, Aki was still determined to race for his dream to be part of the Youth Olympic Games.

Despite all his efforts, Aki did not secure a qualifying spot in the Youth Olympic Games. Could it have been the removal of swimming? Or was it simply his training for the other parts wasn’t enough? Aki had already been through enough races at this point that he knew it didn’t matter. As the door for the Youth Olympic Games closed, another window of opportunity opened for Aki in the form of a formal qualification for the Philippine National Triathlon Team.

Since his win in the Philippine Aquathlon Championship two years ago, Aki became a prospect for the National Triathlon Team. They monitored his participation in triathlons and observed his overall performance. His show in the Youth Olympic Games – despite the absence of swimming – only furthered their interest in Aki. And officially after the Youth Olympic Games, Inaki Emil Lorbes officially became part of the Philippine National Triathlon Team.

Mr. Garry Domingo is the DLSZ Swim Coach

My seOULful TravelBy Jose avelino Goroy

Annyeong!

That means “hello,” and anyone who travels to Korea will learn how to greet the locals with “Annyeong” in whatever twang.

I was no exception. My “SEOULful” travel to South Korea last summer allowed me to greet each day with “annyeong” in my distinct Ilonggo accent. This travel was no doubt a worthwhile and learning experience, which allowed me to know the culture, traditions, and modern living of the people of South Korea.

Kamsahamnida.

That’s “Thank you.” Around 40 DLSZ faculty and staff are very grateful to the school President, Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC for his endorsement to the Korean Embassy, so each one would be able to secure a visa to the “K-pop Republic”.

The big group did not fly to Seoul on the same date. I was lucky to be with Ms. Ruby Natividad and her husband, Teddy, Ms. Grace Cabrito, Ms. Jenny Dela Rosa, Ms. Louise Añonuevo, and Mr. Rosendo Rama. Together, we learned Seoul and many things about this beautiful, affluent Asian country beginning May 2, 2018.

Day 1 (May 2)

From Manila, at around 2:00 PM, I boarded a Philippine Airlines flight bound to Incheon Airport. The plane safely arrived at its destination by 6:00 PM. Since I had a different flight from my six companions, I had to wait for them in the airport. We took a cab to

Seoul, and in no time, we arrived at Alice Hotel in Jung-gu District which would be our home for the next eight days.

Day 2 (May 3)

After our early breakfast, our journey began. First, we went to the historical Gyeongbokgung Palace in Gwanghwamun Square which is located just across our hotel. Gyeongbokgung Palace or “Palace of Shining Happiness” was built back in 1459 during the Joseon Dynasty. In this palace you can also find the National Palace Museum of Korea and National Folk Museum of Korea. Here, we witnessed the royal changing of guards at the entrance — a rare sight of a traditional palace ceremony!

After the sightseeing and picture-taking at the palace, we proceeded to Namsan Park which is an ecological garden hanging over Jung-gu and Yongsan-gu. I learned that this park symbolizes Seoul. This breathtaking garden with the “longest road planted with beautiful cherry blossoms” is a must-see, a perfect place for “selfie”! Then, we caught ourselves in a cable car heading up to Mt. Namsan.

At the top of this mountain stands the lofty Seoul Tower which is the most iconic landmark in Seoul. The top of the tower is almost 480 meters above sea level, so it is the best spot, specifically in the observatory deck, to enjoy sighting the bustling city of Seoul. Another attraction in the peak of Namsan is the “Lock of Love“, a spacious wooden viewing deck whose romantic, captivating atmosphere makes it very popular to lovers. The thousands of padlocks left by couples in the fence seem to shout, “May forever!”

Day 3 (May 4)

A bus ride going to Bukchon Hanok Village started our third day in Seoul. Bukchon Hanok Village is a neighborhood of traditional houses from the Joseon Dynasty. It’s interesting to know that these Hanok houses are privately owned residences. A stroll in the community of traditional houses and picturesque alleys will give you an opportunity to experience, learn, and immerse yourself in traditional Korean culture. While in the village, we grabbed the chance to wear the hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) to get that perfect feel of experiencing the traditional Korean culture heritage which dates back in 57 B.C.-668 A.D. Undoubtedly, the local culture is such an interesting attraction! Day 4 (May 5)

How about a taste of the Korean drama craze? Day four brought us to the beautiful Nami Island in Gapyeong, named after General Nami who led his men to a significant victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of Joseon Dynasty. His grave is found in this island. This half-moon shaped isle is a hit to both local and foreign tourists, I heard. Why not? This is where the famous international Korean drama “Winter Sonata” was filmed!

Day 5 (May 6)

To the shopaholics, don’t forget to visit Myeongdong which is the most prominent shopping district in this part of the country. In this shopping paradise, you can find everything from internationally–recognized brands to unique items; it is also a place to shop for famous Korean cosmetic brands such as Etude House, Skin Food, Laneige, and The Face Shop. And when you get hungry, you can hop into one of the various family restaurants that serve local and international cuisines; or you can try any of the combos served in fast food chains. How different chicken McDo is in Seoul!

For me, the best time to shop in Myeongdong is at night. And night

shopping we did! The colorful lights, the sounds, even the noise of the crowd, and the smell of the street foods are so inviting! Of course, we visited here the Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception to pray for our safe travel.

Day 6 (May 7)

Pasyal pa more! This time, we hang around the Everland. This 100-hectare park is South Korea’s largest theme park. It is also known for its gorgeous flower arrangements and beautiful gardens. This 4th most visited theme park in the world showcases 40 heart-pounding rides and attractions and a safari world that houses wild and interesting animals.

After some fun time at the Everland, we visited Petite France which is a village on the Mediterranean coast. Imagine a French cultural village set in Korean countryside! Built with 16 French–styled buildings, this is a place where visitors can lodge and experience French delicacies, clothing, and household culture. The village, with 34 guest rooms, can accommodate up to 200 visitors. While we were there, we walked along the memorial hall dedicated to Saint-Exupery, the author of the much celebrated French novel, “Le Petit Prince.” Hence, it is called the Little French Theme Park. Of course, we didn’t miss having “selfies” in front of the Eiffel Tower, which is also a miniature. We visited a gallery of sculptures, paintings of France’s national symbol—le coq gaulois (the Gallic rooster). Oh! The marionette dance show of the Czech Republic was a delight to see. It gave us

exposure to percussion instruments from around the world. I learned that Petite France is not only a cultural village, but it is also a youth training facility. That’s just good to know.

Day 7 (May 8)

The EHWA Womans University

Yes, I spelled that right—“Womans”. Despite the oh-so-not-so special plural form in the name of the university, EHWA Womans University remains the most prestigious academic institution for female students in Seoul. First of all, its architectural design and landscape are so unique. The underground campus with its ecological roof is first of its kind. Beautiful trees and flowers decorate the street. No wonder many tourists visit this place! The area around the university is full of budget-friendly street eatables, cafes, restaurants, shops, and stores. I learned that in Seoul, it is typical for a university to be surrounded by such establishments.

From academic vibe to shopping mode again! From EHWA, we headed to Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Korea’s largest wholesale and retail shopping district. Would you believe that it has 26 shopping malls and 30,000 specialty shops? From time to time, this plaza holds various domestic and international events such as exhibitions, fashion shows, forums, and conferences. British Iraqi architecture Zaha Hadid did a superb work on Dongdaemun Design Plaza’s neo-futuristic architectural design. Some claim that it is a “major urban development landmark in Seoul.” I’d like to believe that it is.

Another awesome attraction that we visited was Insadong. I learned that there are about 100 galleries in the area that exhibit traditional Korean fine arts from painting to

sculptures. It has a wide variety of goods that can only be purchased in Korea: hanbok (traditional clothing), hanji (traditional paper), teas, pottery, and folk and crafts. We even experienced how to make traditional lotus lanterns and joined Buddha’s birthday celebration with a parade of lanterns. It was fun to see the locals and foreigners enjoying themselves in the street party!

DAY 8 (May 9)

Isn’t it interesting to see a long river or stream in the midst of a modern city? Cheonggyecheon Stream, where the annual Seoul Lantern Festival is held, is exactly that! Actually, it is a long stream that runs through downtown Seoul, so long that it connects 22 bridges! You can visit tourist destinations like Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Plaza, the Sejong Center, Insa-dong Street, Changdeokgung Palace and Changgyeonggung Palace by simply having a leisure stroll around the stream. And when you look around, be ready to be overwhelmed by the skyscrapers that surround this modern recreational place! At night, the lights and water display adds a vibrant personality to its already beautiful surroundings. Add to that the graceful fountains! How can you not be amazed? They say that Cheonggyecheon Stream “never goes

to sleep” as tourists flock the safe, friendly place 24/7. Day 9 (May 10)

Annyeonghasaeyo!

How can I say “goodbye” to Seoul? I wish to spend more time in this wonderful country, despite encountering again its seemingly “closed” and cold people. I know that there are still a lot of places in Seoul to discover and enjoy, more authentic bibimbap and galbi to taste, more kimchi to smell, more K-pop music to hear…and the list goes on and on.

Forget goodbyes.

“Daume ddo bayo, Seoul!”

See you again. Mr. Jose Goroy is the school’s Bookstore In-Charge

dLsZ Turns-over Holy Trinity Chapel and Closes One La salle Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Project

After almost two years of planning and fundraising, the community of Barangay Trinidad in Tubabao Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, along with the De La Salle Philippines team and the One La Salle Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Project’s Team, finally gathered together for the blessing of their newly-built Holy Trinity Chapel. The blessing took place last August 30, 2018. The program started with the unveiling of the dedicatory marker by Br. Jose Mari Jimenez FSC, Auxiliary Visitor for Philippines of the Lasallian East Asia District, Fr. Cesar Lenino Garcia OP, former parish priest of San Lorenzo Ruiz parish, and Barangay Trinidad Chairperson, Hon. Gertrudes Abuda. It was followed by the ribbon cutting led by Br. Armin Luistro FSC, President of the De La Salle Philippines, Most Reverend Bishop Crispin Varquez DD of the Diocese of Borongan, Fr. James Abella SJ, the parish priest, and Mrs. Apolonia Godino, President of the Holy Trinity Chapel Pastoral Council.

A Eucharistic Mass was held after presided by Most Reverend Bishop Crispin Varquez DD. In his homily, Bishop Varquez enjoined the faithful to always go to Mass and strengthen their relationship with God because they have a new Chapel where they can nourish their relationship with God, and encouraged the community to do their counterpart to make sure that the chapel is well-taken care of. Bishop Varquez also gave emphasis on the meaning of the green canopy in front of the Chapel which symbolizes the broken

chevron of the De La Salle coat of arms which means Indivisa Manent in Latin, or permanently Indivisible in English. He reminded the faithful that the symbol will always serve as a reminder for everyone to remain united and to stick together as one community no matter what happens.

It was then followed by a short closing program of the One La Salle Yolanda Rehabilitation and Recovery Project hosted by Mr. Benjamin Sazon Jr. from DLSZ and Ms. Liza Sumook from Trinidad Elementary School.

Br.

After his inspirational message, representatives from the Barangay council, parents, teachers and youth shared their experiences and thoughts as well about the four-year engagement in their community.

Br. Armin Luistro FSC delivered his closing message after. He shared some lessons that he got from this celebration.

Br. Armin also emphasize how important Barangay Tubabao is in

the lives of the Lasallians.

As his parting message, “Sa katapusan po, maraming maraming salamat. Sa pag-alis po namin sa Tubabao, mas marami kaming natutunan mula sa inyo na hindi mabibili ng pera, na hindi po mawawasak ng Yolanda, at hinding-hindi po namin makakalimutan. Mas marami po kaming baon na galing sa inyong buhay na ibabalik namin kung saan man kami pupunta. Kaya

Br. Jose Mari Jimenez FSC turns over the Chapel of the Holy Trinity to Most Reverend Bishop Crispin Varquez DD of the Diocese of Borongan, Rev Fr. James Abella, the parish priest of San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish, and Mrs. Apolonia Godino, President of the Holy Trinity Chapel Pastoral Council.

The program was attended by the Diocese of Borongan headed by Most Reverend Bishop Crispin Varquez DD, the De La Salle Brothers, representatives from De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, De La Salle Philippines, Guiuan Disaster Response Coordination, San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish, Holy Trinity Chapel pastoral council, Chapel pastoral councils of Tubabao Island barangays, Department of Education Guiuan District, Trinidad Elementary School faculty and students, Sangguniang Barangay of Trinidad, members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Guiuan, and the people of Barangay Trinidad.

The Blessing of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was graced by the presence of the following: (L-R) Br. Armin Luistro FSC, President of De La Salle Philippines, Br. Martin Sellner FSC, Brother Animator of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, Fr. James Abella, San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish Priest, Most. Rev. Lasallian Leadership empowerment and development series 3 in singapore

By Marianna Gutierrez (DLsZ 2019)

Singapore is known to be a melting pot of many nationalities, religions, and races, yet they are still able to unite as a country and live as one people. This can only be experienced first hand. I, Ianna Andrelle Gutierrez (DLSZ 2023) along with 16 other students namely Samantha Andrea Ocampo (DLSZ 2024), Francesca Juliana Cruz (DLSZ 2025), William Ronald Samonte (DLSZ 2026), Isabela Bustamante (DLSZ 2024), Juliana Santos (DLSZ 2024), Lauren Jasmin Hannako Sison Padua (DLSZ 2024), Cedji Davin Nave Matulin (DLSZ 2025), Maxine Priscilla Julienne Ilagan (DLSZ 2023), Catherine Emilia Lauren Samonte (DLSZ 2022), Ma. Carmela Santamaria Gonzales (DLSZ 2020), Chelsea Ayangco (DLSZ 2019), Louise Francesca Vijandre (DLSZ 2019), Gianna Erika Lotilla (DLSZ 2019), Hyunji Aaliah Park (DLSZ 2019), Matthew Vincent Canete (DLSZ 2019) and Steven Leroy Bulaong (DLSZ 2019) and adult leaders; Ms. Clarissa Teves, the GS SRCC adviser, Mr. Benjamin Sazon Jr. and Ms. Marianne Nathalie Gosgolan, our Social Action Ministers were honored to be invited to join a leadership program with St. Patrick School Singapore. This was called the Lasallian Leadership Empowerment and Development Series 3 (LLEAD3). During our four-day trip, we went to many places and engaged with a lot of people that helped us understand Singapore’s unique culture.

We arrived late afternoon of April 16th, very excited to meet all the students from St. Patrick. We were welcomed with open arms and a sumptuous local fare dinner before settling in our rooms.

The next day, we attended St. Patrick’s morning assembly where fellow student leaders Sam Ocampo, Charlie Samonte, and Gia Lotilla took to the stage and shared their leadership experiences in their own school organizations in Zobel.

Shortly after, we were split up into groups and observed different classes. Some sat in Math and Computer classes, while others participated in a cooking class.

Then, some St. Patrick School students joined us as we went to a home for the aged. A large percentage of Singapore’s resident population is elderly (aged >65 years) and they have developed many programs for seniors. We were able to assist the elderly with their morning activities, played some ‘old’ games like Bingo, and new games, too. To show our appreciation for their time, we performed a short song and dance for them. I was not allowed to take pictures here, but I know I will remember that happy morning for a long time.

We then went back on our bus and took a tour around Arab Street, Little India, and China Town. From the colorful buildings, to the unique aromas, we were truly able to encounter Singapore’s diversity as well as its one-of-a-kind culture.

After a long day, we went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner and headed to Gardens by the Bay to watch the light show.

After eating breakfast at the Marine Terrace Market the next day, we headed to Universal Studios, one of my most favorite places to visit in Singapore. We were all very excited to get on the rides and have lots of fun. After going to Universal Studios, we went to Vivo City, the largest mall in Singapore, to do some last minute shopping.

sRCC, ORGs HOLd ABOT LAsALYAnO 2018IN thE COMMUniTY

A total of 197 “bakwit” composed of 187 children and 10 parents from Maharlika Village,Taguig visited De La Salle Santiago Zobel School for Abot Lasalyano Part 1, an annual In-Reach Activity of student clubs and organizations, held on August 6, 2018 at Gym 5, Lower Grades in DLSZ.

Welcoming them were the entire members of the High School Student Representative Coordinating Council for Academic Year 2018 -2019 armed to the teeth with their prepared programs and food for the guests.

Seven organizations joined namely Best Buddies DLSZ Chapter, Counterpoint, Lasalyanong Pinoy, Lasallian Youth Corps, Mission Youth, Youth for Christ, and the HS SRCC. Around 100 club members actively participated in this year’s in-reach activity headed by Janna Ysabelle F. Medrero (DLSZ 2019), HSSRCC Social Action Vice President. Each organization prepared parlor games, snacks, and tokens for the children who enjoyed the six-hour bonding with the student leaders.

Now on its sixth year, ABOT LASALYANO is a collaborative project of Student Clubs and Activities Office, Social Action Office, and the Lasallian Formation and Mission Department. It targets to reach out to the marginalized sector of the society through a simple fellowship gathering.

SCAO conveys its sincerest gratitude to the participants of this worthwhile activity that stresses the Lasallian Core Value of Zeal for Service.

We went back to the school for the farewell dinner with the students. We had such an enjoyable time singing and dancing with them. Here is Cedji showing his appreciation for St. Patrick’s School hospitality:

And members of MOVE sharing love for Filipino music:

On April 19th, we traveled safely back to the Philippines.

We are all very thankful for our moderators, parents, and the entire DLSZ for having given us a chance to be part of this amazing experience. We learned to step outside our comfort zones and to try new things. For some students, it was their first time in Singapore and their first international student leadership training. It was very fascinating to see that everyone was able to cooperate with each other despite their differences. It made us realize how important it is to celebrate our similarities, while appreciating what makes us different.
