A warm welcome to the following new students to Ranzau School: Fern Holmwood, Ayla Burt & Lochie Mahon UNION MEETINGS: You may be aware of the nationwide crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers. Next week, our teachers will be attending a NZEI Te Riu Roa paid union meeting regarding the Kua Tae Te Wā - It’s Time campaign. The campaign aims to free teachers to teach and principals to lead, by getting the additional support and staff that schools need. The meetings will allow our teachers to discuss how the Ministry of Education has responded to changes that the union is seeking. The majority of our teaching staff are members of NZEI and legally entitled to attend this meeting. As there is more than one meeting we have been able to stagger staff attending, which means classes can continue as normal. 40 HOUR FAMINE: Did you know our Ranzau School students are able to make a real difference to the lives of many South Sudanese children and their families who have fled to Uganda? They can help make incredible changes by being part of the 2019 40 Hour Famine, which is organized by World Vision. Your child can either take up a challenge or sponsor a friend who is participating. On Monday 6 th May at lunchtime the Community Council will be taking registrations from any student wishing to participate. It would be great if you could talk to your child over the weekend and help them come up with a fun challenge. This year Zac Sampson is only allowed to live out of his backpack for 40 hours, Zach Bulley is giving up technology and treats & Lachlan McGillivray is going to give up furniture – which means sleeping on the floor. Students participating in the 2019 40 Hour Famine will also earn participating students a star for their Star Challenge ROAD SAFETY WEEK: Next Week (Week 2) 6-12 May As part of this Campaign Ranzau is running a BRIGHT DAY! We encourage ALL Students to DRESS Up in BRIGHT COLOURED Clothes for our Walk to School Wednesday! Get on your neon tutu and fluorescent leg warmers and walk to school with us as we show awareness for the need for safety around our roads. Dressing BRIGHT helps to remind drivers to slow down and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists, and raises awareness of people killed and injured on foot and bicycle on our roads every year. Alongside this we will be raising money for ongoing care of the cats that were recovered from school in the holidays so we ask that students please bring a gold coin donation on this day. PARENT INFORMATION: Sian Sander (Ministry of Education) will be running a workshop to explain the ‘Zones of Regulation’ programme (https://www.zonesofregulation.com/) to any interested parents. This workshop will be held in the school library on Wednesday, 15th May at 2.20pm. This programme is based around a set of 20 emotions from happy and excited, to worried and angry. The feelings are divided into four different coloured zones, with the scheme helping children recognise which colour zone they are in, why they are in it, and how to get themselves into the zone appropriate to their situation. The Zones framework provides strategies to teach children to become more aware or and independent in managing their sensory needs and improving their ability to problem solve during disagreements.
