PortFringe 2016 by Muriel Kenderdine

“We are so excited to be celebrating our Fifth Birthday in 2016,’ says Deirdre Fulton McDonough. “Since year one, we’ve always said – about some of our more outlandish ideas – ‘five-year plan!’ Now we’re at that point and our continued growth and success make some of those crazier ideas not so crazy any more. We have our typical Fringe cornucopia of genres, giving audiences the chance to sample original plays, multimedia works, dance, improv comedy, experimental per-formance, and much more. Each show is 60 minutes or less, and tickets are priced quite affordably, making theater super-accessible to newcomers and Fringe fanatics alike.”

Founded in 2012 by a core group that included Corey Ander-son, Mariah Bergeron, Deirdre Fulton McDonough, Lisa Bou-cher Hartman, Stacey Koloski, and Michael Dix Thomas, each year the audiences have grown as well as the number of partic-ipants seeking the opportunity to show their alternative theater offerings that may not make it into a regular company season. Applications to be part of the Fringe are sent in from other areas than Maine, but some of the Maine artists’ offerings are listed below by Cast & Crew (also see the Schedule):

RECAP – 2016 MAINE PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL by Muriel Kenderdine

Acorn Productions’ 15th

annual Maine Playwrights Festival took the stage at St. Lawrence Arts Center in Portland May 4 – 7, followed by the 24-Hour Portland Theater Project on May 8. In addition, on April 30 there were staged readings of four semi-finalist plays in the Ballroom at Mechanics Hall in Port-land: HOW THINGS SOMETIMES WORK OUT by Jennifer Reck; INSURRECTIONS by Nicole d’Entremont; ORIGI-NAL BRASSES, FINE PATINA by Elaine Ford; and WHATEVER YOU DECIDE by Bess Welden. Following an open call for scripts, a committee of five read the plays and chose those to be produced under the co-artistic direction of freelance dramaturg/director Daniel Burson and Acorn & MPF founder Michael Levine. Also involved this year was Playwright-in-Residence William Donnelly, who worked with the playwrights on revisions and “tweaking.” The main stage selected plays were:

NERDLORDS VS. THE THING UNDER THE BASEMENT by Jennifer Jensen, directed by Karen Ball, with Hilary Ma-nuel, Sofia Bratt-Graham, Molly Eliza Donlan, and Mackenzie Lewis as four college students who discover that they all have supernatural abilities and get together to destroy the lurking campus monster

SOMETHING BLUE by Delvyn Case, Jr., directed by Al D’Andrea, with Neilab Habibzai and Maha Jaber as two sis-ters in Gaza who are at odds because one of them, after a 3-year engagement, wants to escape to be with her fiancé in the West Bank

OLIVE SHRINESHADE by Richard Sewell, directed by Liz Rollins, with Jesse Mantsch, occupying the rooms of deceased psychic Olive, and Meredythe Dehne Lindsey, who felt called by Olive, her mother, to travel 420 miles to open her urn

PLANCHETTE by Carolyn Gage, directed by Odelle Bow-man, with Lily Carrigan, Isabel Floyd, and Eric Worthley, set in Portsmouth, NH, in 1879 during a nor’easter as a 14-year-old minister’s daughter and a visiting girl of the same age who dresses and acts like a boy, after initially disliking each other, finally share secrets and trauma they have survived

MEET THE AUTHOR by David Susman, directed by Al D’Andrea, with Rocco Tripaldi as the lonely author at a book signing and Anna Blash as a fan finally showing up, who re-veals that she loves him but hates his book

Production staff for the festival included set by Craig Robin-son, lighting by Michaela Wirth, costumes by Liz Rollins, sound board operation by Jay Jones, and stage management by Jasmine Edwards.

Then six playwrights were chosen to find out early Saturday evening who would be their directors and actors and went off to write a play, with all of them required to use in the play the same prop: a rotary telephone, site: a pickle store, and bit of dialogue: “If you really want to learn, you have to pay atten-tion.” Emailing their night’s work to directors by 7:30 am Sunday, that left it up to the directors and actors to rehearse and present the final results on stage by 7:30 Sunday evening.

The plays were: WHAT’S THIS PLAY ABOUT? by Delvyn Case, Jr. directed by Ann Tracy, POLLY’S PICKLES by Lynne Cullen directed by Laura Graham; PICKLES AND PRESERVATION by Laurie Madeiros directed by Karen Ball; PICKLES IN THE BRONX by Harlan Baker directed by Charlie Cole; BIG JUNK PICKLES by Jefferson Navicky directed by Odelle Bowman; & THE PICKLE PLAY by Car-olyn Gage directed by Mike Levine. Actors were Shirley Ber-nier, Anna Blash, Josh Brassard, Isabella Rose Coulombe, Molly Eliza Donlan, Danny Gay, David Handwerker, Robbie Harrison, Christopher Hoffmann, John Kerr, Michele Lettiere, Meredythe Dehne Lindsay, Janet Lynch, Janie Downey Max-well, Alexandra Munier, Eric Norgaard, Bob Pettee, Nicole Provonsil, Tristan Rolfe, Rocco Tripaldi, & David L. Vincent. Patricia Mew was the producer with stage management by Jasmine Edwards & sound by Jay Jones.

Are you sick of performing the same stale one-act plays at play competitions?

I can cut two or three-act plays for you and bring them in under 40 minutes. I have references re cuttings which have become regional and state winners. You pick the play, you get the clearance for the cutting, and I’ll do it for you for a flat fee of $300.00. This might be the best expense you have in your High School Theater budget.
