Moreover, an understanding was developed about goal setting, psycho-education, and ways to minimization of negative thoughts,

maximization of positive thoughts and downward-arrowing. Director NIP, Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal appreciated the resource person and her team. She also added that NIP will look forward to continue working on such learning based activities with collaborated efforts. was developed about changes and appropriately integrating them into clinical practice. During this training, an explanation was provided of the core changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5 including the new non-axial documentation of diagnosis, an overview of a revised organizational structure, and the changes within selected diagnostic categories (i.e., bipolar and related disorders separated from depressive disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders,

somatic symptom and related disorders, childhood

disorders, and the separation of trauma and stressor-

related disorders from anxiety disorders into its own

category). Through this workshop and an interactive

panel discussion, participants learnt about how to

effectively implement these changes into their own

clinical practice.

The most awaited entertainment package of semester was the trip to Naran Kaghan. NIP organized this trip in collaboration with Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC). The distinctive feature of this trip was that many of the faculty members including Dr. Anila Kamal (Director NIP), Dr. Rubina Hanif, Dr. Jamil. A. Malik, Dr. Mudassar Aziz, Dr. Gulnaz Anjum, Dr. Syeda Razia Bukhari, Ms. Irum Naqvi, Ms. Raiha Aftab, Mr. Naeem Aslam, and Ms. Saira Khan accompanied students. In total there were 70 trippers and three coasters were booked for this journey. With reference to planning and making arrangements active faculty members were Dr. Jamil A. Malik and Mr. Mohsin Sajjad who made this trip a successful activity. Before trip students were provided with an orientation where they were briefed about weather conditions of Naran so that luggage might be prepared accordingly. Along with this briefing was also provided about decent conduct during the tour. A week before trip students and faculty member were anticipating about the treat that would be brought about by this outing.

The trip was scheduled on June 2nd, 2016. All faculty members and students reached department and caravan to Naran departed around 11: 00 am. The journey to Naran took the route through Abbottabad and Balakot. On the way, everyone stopped for lunch at a small restaurant next to the running waters of Kunhar River. The River is swollen by glacier melt and meanders its way through the Kaghan valley. After lunch, expedition moved on with rejuvenated energy. Later a small stop was made at Abshaar Café after which excursion reached the destination “Affaq Hotel” at around 11: 00 pm. This is where stay was planned for next three nights.

It was an illusionary first morning in Naran. After having breakfast at the hotel, everybody was looking forward to visit Lake Saif-ul-Malook as was scheduled. It is situated at the height of 10,578 feet (3,224 meters) above sea level, and is the most beautiful lake in Kaghan Valley. It offers an excellent view of the Peak of Malika Parbat Mountain. This lake is a water source for River Kunhar. A dusty jeep track makes its way to Lake Saif-ul-Malook which usually takes an hour. But due to the crowded conditions it took two hours to reach the Lake.

Upon arriving at Lake Saif-ul-Malook, the view was majestic. Snow-covered mountains all around and clear water in the middle was breath-taking. It was amazing to watch snow-capped mountains in June. Faculty members and the students had fun in the snow, enjoying the snow-fights, capturing the view in their cameras, and finally headed back to the hotel to rest for a while, until to go out again to small river nearby the hotel for a pleasant walk at night.

The next day in Naran took more fun for the trippers especially for adventure loving lot, as river rafting in the Kunhar River was planned at that day. It was a new and unique experience for most of the people. Everyone enjoyed the waves of the river and floated along with them. After rafting, a visit was made to PTDC Motel. The students and the faculty had fun around the area, especially on the bridge over the water. After having lunch back at the hotel, sight seekers prepared for another adventure at Batakundi but due to road blockage it could not accessed. In order to led off the disappointment everybody favored to stop midway and make the best of it. Some students and faculty hiked a steep mountain and others moved around the river side. On the way back to the hotel, some

Then came the last night in Naran, and everybody was eager to make most of it. A fun extravaganza was planned this night and everybody was really enthusiastic to enjoy the bonfire. Amidst the high mountains, cool breeze, warmth of fire, sound of

music, and delicious smells of barbeque, a leaving party from Naran couldn’t be more precious. The next morning, everyone was a little sad about leaving this beautiful place. On the way back, several stops were made for lunch, pakoras, and ice-cream. Everyone was expecting to go home with fun filled memories of Naran, and a small bidding to go back once again!

M.PHIL/PHD RESEARCHES COMPLETED

Ayesha Inam (2016). Effectiveness of Preschool Paths (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Curriculum to Enhance Social-Emotional Competence (Unpublished Ph.D. Dissertation). National Institute of Psychology, QAU, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Evidence on growing trend of mental health issues in children in the context of socio-political instability in Pakistani society calls for remedial efforts at early childhood stage. The present study is conceptualized to evaluate the effectiveness of Preschool PATHS Curriculum to enhance social-emotional competence of children. The curriculum was culturally adapted in the context of urban Pakistani community using heuristic framework of program adaptation. A

quasi-experimental non-equivalent waitlist control group design was used for the effectiveness trial. The sample consisted of 101, 4 years old preschool children from seven classrooms of different private sector school in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, which were selected on the basis of teacher’s perception of frequency of behavioral problems. The classrooms were further divided into control and intervention groups. Pre and post assessments were collected on revised version of Kusche Emotion Inventory-Receptive Subtest (Kusche, 1984), Child Behavior Checklist (1.5-5)-CTRF (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000), and Social Competence Scale-Teacher Version (Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group, 1990). Intention To Treat (ITT) analysis was used

to assess effectiveness of intervention on outcome measures using last observation carry forward (LOCF) technique for sample attrition. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to adjust the effects of intervention for scores on outcome measures at baseline. Gender effects on intervention status were calculated by Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Effect sizes were calculated for significant intervention effects. Results showed a significant intervention effect on social-emotional competence and behavioral problems of preschool children. However, there were non-significant differences between control and intervention group on accuracy scores of emotion recognition, prosocial/communication skills and academic skills at posttest. Recognition of emotions variable was no more significant after controlling for classroom strength. Significant gender effects were found for impact of intervention on behavioral problems where boys showed decrease in total behavioral problems and externalizing problems. The study provides preliminary evidence of effectiveness of Preschool PATHS curriculum for Pakistani children. With all the limitations of the study, the present investigation can be taken as a critical first step towards understanding the area of prevention science in indigenous context. This research was supervised by Dr. Naeem Tariq (Rtd) NIP.

Sana Mumtaz (2015). Depression in Elderly: Role of quality of life, Orientation to life, and Locus of control. (Unpublished M.Phil. Dissertation). National Institute of Psychology, QAU, Islamabad, Pakistan.

The aim of present study was to identify the predictive role of orientation to life, locus of control, and quality of life in depression among elderly. Mediating role of quality of life in between orientation to life

and locus of control in predicting depression was also explored. Comparison between elderly residing in old-homes and community settings, and socio-demographic differences on depression, orientation to life, locus of control, and quality of life were also examined. Moderating role of place of residence for orientation to life and locus of control in predicting depression was explored too. Participants.(N= 292) of the current study were taken from old-homes (n = 87) and community (n = 205) including both men and women; age ranging from 60 to 110 years. Measures used included Urdu version of Geriatric Depression Scale by Itrat, Taqui, Qidwai, and Qadri (2007), World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale by Khalid and Kausar (2008), Levenson Internality, Powerful Others, Chance Scale by Younis (2003), and Life Orientation Test by Ayub (2004) along with demographic sheet. All the instruments used in the study had sound psychometric properties. Results revealed psychological health, physical health, and social relationships domains of QOL, orientation to life, internal, and powerful others domain of locus of control as significant predictors of depression. Quality of life emerged as mediator in between orientation to life and internal locus of control in predicting depression. Also it was found that participants of old- home had more depression, more belief in powerful others and chance locus of control, and lower quality of life overall and in three domains that is psychological health, social relationships, and environment. Place of residence emerged as moderator in between orientation to life and quality of life in predicting depression. Depression was more common in women, illiterate, economically dependent, participants having more health problems and those without partner. Findings are discussed in the light of implications for elderly depression. The study was supervised by Dr. Humaira Jami.
