Each season, the MacLaren Art Centre presents a new series of thematically-related exhibitions, supported by a wide range of free public programmes. For example, exhibitions this past winter reflected the Gallery’s commitment to raising the profile of important contemporary Indigenous artists. This spring, our programming highlights contributions by women artists with exhibitions that launch from March 8, International Women’s Day. The multi-media works by Vancouver artist Allyson Clay in Irregular Lines open up feminist spaces within art historical traditions. Decipher by Port Hope artist Alice Teichert comprises paintings and drawings that illuminate her engagement with abstraction, typography and the literary arts. Recently acquired paintings by Toronto artist Janet Jones and Michipicoten Bay artist Valerie Palmer complement these main gallery shows, supported by a virtual exhibition of paintings from our collection by artists Renée Van Halm, Shelagh Keeley, Doris McCarthy and Shirley Wiitasalo, all leading figures in Canadian art. Photographs presented online from our Sovfoto Archive document the complex lives of women in the Soviet Union under Stalin and offer the viewer a broader historical and international context. Collectively, these presentations celebrate and promote the tremendous artistic achievements of women artists.

Our summer exhibitions reveal unique approaches to the landscape, both historical and contemporary. Farther Afield, a survey show of paintings and collages by Alliston artist Gary Evans, is presented opposite a group show of photo-based works that captures a Canadian vision of the ubiquitous road trip. Complementing Road Trip, Laura Moore’s stone carvings of obsolete technologies are on display in our garden courtyard while Phil Bergerson’s photographs of American storefronts are presented online. More traditional approaches to this genre are portrayed in the watercolours by renowned 19th century Shanty Bay artist Lucius O’Brien, an initiative that offers a glimpse of a larger conservation project undertaken by the MacLaren for 2017.

Public programmes enhance the meaning of the artworks on view and include guided tours, film screenings and artist talks. Detailed information is available through the information panels, the extended labels, the iPads and the exhibition binders in the gallery spaces. Free digital publications on our website deepen our understanding of the exhibitions and enrich visitor experience, while fun-filled activity sheets and hands-on workshops nurture the imagination of young audiences.

Make it your resolution this year to visit your public art gallery and STARTHINKINGART. I look forward to welcoming you at the Gallery. Admission is always free! Visit www.maclarenart.com for details.

Alice Teichert DecipherMarch 19 to June 19, 2016Janice Laking Gallery Curator: Renée van der Avoird Reception: Thursday, March 24, 7 to 9 pm

Canadian artist Alice Teichert is known for her abstract paintings and mixed-media works that explore the formal qualities and suggestive potential of language. Abandoning the signifying function of the written word, Teichert mines the enigmatic space between textual perception and interpretation. This vocabulary enters her paintings as glyph-like inscriptions and indecipherable lines of script melded between layers of rich colour and pigmented glazes. Integrating new paintings with older works on paper and a large-scale sculptural installation, Decipher traces Teichert’s interest in abstraction, typography and the interstices between the literary and visual arts.

Alice Teichert is a multidisciplinary artist based in Port Hope, Ontario. She was born in Paris, France and raised in a multi-lingual environment. She has built an international career with over thirty solo exhibitions across North America, Europe and Australia. Her work has been collected by many institutions including the Government of Ontario, North York; the Art Gallery of Northumberland, Cobourg; Musée de la Ville de Valence, France; and the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie.

Allyson ClayIrregular LinesMarch 24 to June 26, 2016Gallery 3Curator: Emily McKibbon Reception: Thursday, March 24, 7 to 9 pmArtist Talk: March 23, 10: 30 am, Campus Gallery, Georgian College. Admission free

Vancouver-based artist Allyson Clay has long been interested in feminist spaces within the discursive practice of art history. Irregular Lines features recent works by Clay, including a series of interventions the artist has performed on Doreen Ehrlich’s classic textbook, Masterpieces of 20th Century Painting. In River Subversion: Twentieth Century Masterpieces, Clay immerses the book in a stream and documents it underwater. In Immarginalia and One Hundred Poems, Clay paints shapes derived from works by women artists across the book’s water-damaged spreads and over the gallery walls. As Clay notes, “I am laying a map of leaking borders—traces from the spaces of women—across pages of a familiar and internalized art history.”

Clay received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a MFA from the University of British Columbia. She has exhibited across Canada and internationally. Her work is held in the collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto; and the Art Gallery of Ontario. She teaches at the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.

Gary Evans Farther AfieldJuly 2 to October 30, 2016Janice Laking Gallery and the Carnegie RoomCurators: Renée van der Avoird and Stuart ReidReception: Thursday, July 7, 7 to 9 pmArtist Talk: September 23, 12:15 to 1 pm, Rotary Education Centre. Admission free

Celebrated regional artist Gary Evans is known for his distinctive painting practice that spans two decades. This summer, the MacLaren presents a survey of oil paintings complemented by a selection of recent collages. Layered with dense colours and shifting points of perspective, Evans’ vibrant paintings challenge traditional notions of perception and the landscape. They ask us to view the world from an alternative vantage point, accelerated by movement through space and time. Evans’ collages arrange excised imagery from fashion magazines into carefully constructed spatial collisions. Decontextualized, these fragments depict abstracted formal structures that echo the mysterious and furtive energies of his paintings.

Gary Evans was born in Weston Super Mare, England and lives in Alliston, Ontario. A graduate of OCADU, he has exhibited his work extensively across Canada. Evans is the Coordinator of the School of Design and Visual Art, Georgian College in Barrie. He is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary Art in Toronto. Farther Afield will travel to Rodman Hall Art Centre in St. Catharines and other Canadian venues.

Janet Jones Recent Acquisitions from DaDa DeliriumMarch 8 to July 3, 2016Joan Lehman GalleryCurator: Renée van der AvoirdReception: Thursday, March 24, 7 to 9 pm

Toronto painter Janet Jones probes our fascination with the contemporary moment. Her works are psychological impressions of the urban environment that instill a sense of wonder and trepidation towards our increasingly technological culture. This exhibition features two large-scale paintings from the MacLaren’s Collection. Janet Jones received her MFA from York University and her PhD from New York University in art theory and criticism. She has exhibited across Canada and internationally. Jones is an Associate Professor in the Visual Arts at York University in Toronto.

Valerie Palmer CloudsMarch 8 to June 26, 2016Armstrong HallReception: Thursday, March 24, 7 to 9 pm

Valerie Palmer is a Michipicoten Bay-based painter whose realist works situate her human subjects in the psychologically-charged landscapes and domestic environs of Northern Lake Superior. Palmer’s Clouds (1990), a recent acquisition by the MacLaren, features two figures, one female and one male, their bodies turned towards each other but their gazes introspective. Palmer has exhibited throughout Canada and has work in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax; Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New Brunswick; and Winnipeg Art Gallery. She is represented by Loch Gallery, Toronto.

Road Trip IAIN BAXTER&, Deanna Bowen, Jason Brown, Rafael Goldchain, April Hickox, Justin Newhall, Jeff ThomasJuly 7 to November 6, 2016 Gallery 3 Curator: Emily McKibbonReception: Thursday, July 7, 7 to 9 pm

When Jack Kerouac mused that “the road is life,” he captured the belief that an open stretch of highway is an avenue for personal myth-making in North American culture. In this exhibition of Canadian and international artists, drawn largely from the holdings of the MacLaren Art Centre, each body of work demonstrates some uniquely Canadian aspect of this ostensibly all-American pastime.

This exhibition includes documentation of the highway systems, from the off-kilter views of IAIN BAXTER& to the contemplative documentation of Highway 69 in Jason Brown’s Alone Together. Northern Studies by Justin Newhall highlights Churchill, Manitoba, a city unreachable by highway. Jeff Thomas’s Indians on Tour is an urban take on the typical back-to-nature road trip, starring a series of stereotype-skewering plastic figurines. Rafael Goldchain’s Nostalgia for an Unknown Land captures the artist’s travels through Latin America, teasing out his hyphenated Canadian identity. Deanna Bowen’s sum of the parts: what can be named is a performed oral history of the African diaspora, tracing Bowen’s family history from Clinton, Georgia in 1815 to the near-present in Toronto. April Hickox’s Rose, Winds and Other Stories presents a different kind of travel: filmic in scope, the series highlights a retreat inwards.

Laura Moore one man’s junkJuly 7 to October 16, 2016Massie Family Sculpture CourtyardCurator: Emily McKibbonReception: Thursday, July 7, 7 to 9 pm

one man’s junk is a series of limestone sculptures hand-carved to resemble computer monitors the artist found abandoned in front yards and alleyways throughout Toronto. Moore uses this classical material to memorialize the orphaned screens, highlighting the accelerating pace—and waste—of digital obsolescence. As Moore notes, stone is the material of the “monuments and sculptures that tell our history.” Moore’s installation places the sculptures in the garden courtyard, evoking the chance discoveries of her source material; some are placed on a pine pallet, and others scattered like discarded electronic waste in the flowerbeds.

Laura Moore is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture. She received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and her MFA from York University. Moore has exhibited internationally, most recently at Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus, Denmark; the Indianapolis Art Centre; the Cotton Factory, Hamilton, Ontario; and the Art Gallery of Windsor. Moore resides in Toronto, where she is represented by Zalucky Contemporary. This exhibition is accompanied by a digital publication featuring an essay by Toronto-based writer Adam Lauder.

Lucius O’Brien The Art of ConservationJuly 7 to October 30, 2016Joan Lehman GalleryCurator: Emily McKibbonReception: Thursday, July 7, 7 to 9 pm

When Lucius O’Brien painted Doon, Ontario, 124 years ago in 1891, he could not have anticipated the ways in which this intimate work would deteriorate over time. The MacLaren has been working to conserve nine delicate watercolours by O’Brien, culminating in a major exhibition in 2017. This preview highlights the conservation process, demonstrating the high level of care that we bring to artworks in our holdings. Lucius O’Brien was born in 1832 in Shanty Bay. A significant Canadian painter of the Victorian era, he was the founding president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists. Lucius O’Brien died in Toronto in 1899.

The Henri Robideau Gianthropological Resource CentreJuly 7 to October 9, 2016Molson Community GalleryCurator: Emily McKibbonReception: Thursday, July 7, 7 to 9 pmLecture: “The Gigantic in Contemporary Art”, September 9, 12:15 to 1 pm. Admission free

In 1973, self-proclaimed “gianthropologist” Henri Robideau set out to document the outsized statuary of North America in a series of pseudo-scientific “digs.” The Pancanadienne Gianthropological Survey highlights the ways in which Canadian artists have interrogated the landscape tradition from the 1970s onwards. With photographic postcards and bookworks from the MacLaren’s Collection, it highlights the artist’s contribution to this evolving form. Henri Robideau is a senior Canadian photographer based in Vancouver. His work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Robert Frank Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Surrey Art Gallery. Robideau taught at Emily Carr University from 1979 to 2015.
