Dear Families, What a busy couple of weeks we have had.
Our International Women’s Day breakfast celebration was a great hit and I would like to
thank Troy and the DONs for their work in organising the morning. Vice Captain of
Adelaide Football Club, Angela Foley, came and spoke to the students about her
journey into a sport predominantly played by males and how important it is to work hard
for the things you would like to achieve.
Kylie and Alex, with Connor & Joe, took their classes to Woodhouse Adventure Camp
and had a great time iceboarding down the hill and participating in many other fun
activities during the hot weather.
Carnevale Day was a big success with a fun assembly showcasing the work students
have been doing in Italian. Students ran activities during break times and the students
and staff looked the part in their bright colours and costumes. A big thank you to Selina
and Elena our Italian teachers for organising the day and the parents who came to help
with the selling and serving of gelati.
Our week is finishing with a Student Free Day where staff will be partaking in Professional
Learning. Students have all completed a narrative writing sample and staff will assess this
against the Brightpath ruler. This tool has other work samples and will allow staff to
determine what are the students’ next steps in writing. Staff will also look at how students
use authorial choices and language conventions to make their writing interesting and
will begin sharing with students what they can do and what they need to further
develop.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Social and emotional learning is about developing the ability to care for others, making
responsible decisions, establishing positive relationships, and handling challenging
situations.
This component looks at the best ways of teaching social and emotional skills for all
students.
What social and emotional learning is all about?
School is not only about reading, writing and maths. It is also about making friends,
learning how to work with others, and knowing how to be more responsible for your
own behaviour.
Knowing how to manage feelings and get on with others are important skills for
everyone. This kind of learning starts in early childhood with parents and carers as
children’s most important first teachers.
Research has found that teaching children social
and emotional skills at school as well as at home
makes a positive difference to their wellbeing. Social
and emotional skills help school children settle in the
classroom and get on with learning. Useful skills to
learn include:
1. Coping with frustrations or worries
2. Getting along with others
3. Solving problems.
The kinds of social and emotional skills that are
important for children to develop have been
identified by researchers as: Self-awareness
Understanding feelings, self-confidence Social awareness
Respecting and understanding others, and appreciating differences between people Self-management
Managing emotions, being able to set goals and stick to them Responsible decision making
Choosing wisely and thoughtfully Relationship skills
Cooperating, communicating, making friends and resolving conflict.
At school, we incorporate all of these skills throughout the day. Social and Emotional
Learning is covered by the Personal and Social Capability continuum in the Australian
Curriculum.

This year Norwood Primary School will be participating in the Commissioner’s Digital Challenge – Learn to speak robot, for years 3 - 6. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about computational thinking and basic coding. It was created by the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly, after she discovered that South Australian children wanted to have new creative ways to learn what they need know to prepare for jobs of the future. Helen believes that our children need inclusive active opportunity to understand digital technology and to develop digital literacy skills, operate as a digital citizen and reach their potential through digital empowerment. This is how the Commissioner’s Digital Challenge was created.
We will be completing this challenge during class time at the start of term 2, however, students are able to complete some of the challenges at home as well. The great thing about the Commissioner’s Challenge is that it can be completed on a device or just by using pencils and paper. I will have the Student Coding Records, which need to be completed by the 13th September. If your student is participating in the Children’s University Program they will receive accreditation towards their Children’s University Certificate as well.
As we are officially part of the Commissioner’s Challenge, we are eligible to win digital rewards for our students. These include:
A brand new school website or upgrade 1 winner
Class set of programmable micro:bits
4 winners
The latest programmable camera drones
10 winners
Grok ‘all access’ class subscriptions
6 winners
Data packs with Powerbanks
4 winners
Plus, every school that participates receives access to 3 exclusive 1 hour Digital Challenge webinars written for South Australian teachers by Microsoft. And every child completing the Challenge earns a certificate from the Commissioner for Children and Young People.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is on Friday March 15th, 2019. Norwood Primary is a diverse community, and we continually work with students on
understanding that each student is unique and brings with them individual differences that
should be valued and respected. Students will be participating in discussions in class on the day
and continuing discussions and activities on Harmony Day, 22nd March.

Clean Up Day….Found During our clean-up day, held On Thursday, an esky was found in
Richards’ Park by year 7 student, Sam. It is in near new condition and
appears to have been left behind in the park —maybe by an NPS
family (?)
If this is yours or you know who it belongs to, please see Kerri in the
front office.

NPS students are once again invited to participate in the SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards Exhibition 2019
which celebrates the courage, resilience, strength and contributions of people of refugee background.
SRC are leading this event and ask students who wish to participate to note the following:
Students do not have to complete a poster, this is entirely optional
Posters must be A2 in size (paper available at the front office)
Posters must be kept flat and returned to the office (to Julie) before Monday 1st April, Week 10 (9:00am)
Posters received by this date will be carefully looked over by SRC at their meeting on Thursday 4th April and
the top 10 will be taken by Julie to the SA Refugee Week Committee
Only 10 posters per school can be submitted
Entry forms with all other entry rules and details are available at the front office and must be completed and
attached to the back of the poster
The poster should visually illustrate the theme of the exhibition—multiculturalism, human rights, cultural
diversity, anti-racism and the welcoming of refugees to Australia, as well as how refugees become part of
and contribute to the ‘Australian Family’.
Good luck!
