The month of Elul is traditionally regarded as a time for preparation as we await the High Holy Days. There is a lovely rabbinic teaching that observes that the name of the month in Hebrew is an acrostic for the biblical phrase, Ani l'dodi v'dodi li, "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine" (Song of Songs 6:3). As we prepare our hearts for the Days of Awe, we remember that our relationship with God is one of love. We and God belong to each other as members of a loving couple. Take some time in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah to assess the relationships in your life. Where have you acted to strengthen your bonds with your friends, family, your children and your spouse? Where have you caused harm? What acts of love can you take between now and Yom Kippur to repair what is broken, to heal what is suffering, and to bring joy and vitality into your relationships? Also, take some time to consider your relationship to your own happiness. Have you been kind to yourself, or do you beat yourself up with guilt and faltering self- esteem? Do you give yourself time for rest, for physical exercise, and for expansion of your spirit? How could you make changes in your life between now and Yom Kippur to be more loving to yourself? Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are not just days to gather with family and community. They are also a time for us to focus deeply on our lives and to make things right where they are wrong. That's hard work. It takes time. Make a specific choice to give yourself the time you need to prepare. Find the love for others and for yourself that needs to be released in the month of Elul. SINAI STUDIES FALL 2018

Classes with Rabbi Goldwasser

Understanding the Friday Night Service

Tuesday mornings at 10 AM, September 25, October 2, 16, 23, 30, and November 6.

The prayers of the Friday night service are a collection of ancient and medieval poetry. Rabbi Jeff Goldwasser will re-view the liturgy in English translation for deeper understanding and appreciation. If you are looking for ways to make prayer a more meaningful experience, come to learn about and reflect upon the words of the prayerbook. No Hebrew required.

The Jewish Way in Death and Dying.

Tuesday mornings at 10 AM, November 27, December 4, 11, and 18.

Nothing says more about the way we appreciate life than the way we approach death. In this four-week course, we will explore Jewish law and customs concerning the approach of death, rituals for burial and mourning, and the way we remember people and sanctify their lives long after they have died.

From the Cantor’s Desk By Cantor Deborah Johnson

Kol Nidrei. Is there any piece of music more indelibly idenitified with the High Holidays than Kol Nidrei? For many of us, all the power and poignancy of the High Holidays is summed up in the sounds of Kol Nidrei on erev Yom Kippur. The text of Kol Nidrei is complex. At its simplest, it is a declaration of the absolution of our vows. It is not a prayer, but a legal contract written in Aramaic; in fact, halachically, Kol Nidrei should be sung before sunset since no such “business” is allowed on a holy day. The accompanying ceremony is also judicial: traditionally, two congregants take two Torah scrolls from the ark and stand on either side of the cantor, symbolizing a Bet Din or rabbinic court.

The date of the text is unknown, but was likely introduced in the Geonic period (589–1038 CE). There is a common, but unlikely, theory that it came to be during a particularly violent period of forced conversions, thereby allowing Jews to convert publicly and recant privately. That this created justification for the stereotype of the lying, cheating Jew led the Reform

movement to abolish it in the mid-19th century, restoring it only in 1961.

None of this, of course, accounts for the deeply emotional impact of the music, often superimposed on new text even when the original words were disallowed. Jewish comedian Lewis Black has called it “the spookiest piece of music ever written” and joked that Alfred Hitchcock used it as inspiration. The whole piece is usually performed three times (in case a late arrival has not heard it). At our Temple Sinai, the first iteration is an exquisite cello solo, and then, according to tradition as old as the 12

th century Machzor Vitry, the cantor “utters it very softly like one who…fears to approach”;

finally, in the third presentation, the cantor takes the key up a step, singing louder and with more intensity as if to “a friend."

The music for Kol Nidre is often called missinai - unchanged since Moses came down from Mount Sinai., or at least, very

old, intraculturally consistent, and unauthored. The fundamental tune had certainly been in the air for many centuries, from German Gregorian chant-books prior to the 11

th century to the first five bars of the sixth movement

of Beethoven's C sharp minor quartet of 1826. Nonetheless, there are no two synagogues in which the same rendition will be heard. Every cantor brings to it his/her own depth of emotion, understanding, experience, and the long tradition of hazzanut (classic cantorial singing) that has shaped this melody. Kol Nidrei is the Days of Awe in a nutshell. I dearly hope that I am able to impart some of this power, and create for you a meaningful setting for your own prayers and contemplations as we enter the New Year. Shanah tovah!

Sisterhood By Nicole Rappoport

We hope everyone is enjoying this very warm summer. Just a few quick notes regarding Sisterhood this year. Ellen Rappoport will stay on as President, and Carmen Rappoport as Vice President. We will now be having only 2-4 meetings per year, most of them will be in conjunction with other sisterhood gatherings.

We hope you all enjoyed the Pot Luck dinner on Tuesday

August 14. We had a brief business meeting after dinner.

Our next Sisterhood sponsored events will be on two

Sundays in September— our annual Open House

Breakfast on the first day of school and our annual

Challah Making session. Our next Sisterhood meeting

will be after the Paid Up Dinner in November. We could

use a few volunteers to help with the Open House

Breakfast and the Paid Up dinner. Please contact Robin

Sciarcon to help with Paid Up and Helene Chase for the

Open House Breakfast. Our calendar for 2018-2019/5779

The ever reliable Sandwiches at Sinai crew did not disappoint over the summer. They delivered bag lunches monthly in June, July and August to "Be The Change" in West Warwick without missing a beat.

The lunches truly fill a need and are greatly appreciated. More help is always welcome. Our September date is Sunday, September 30 at 10:00 am.

The School Scene By Susannah Carter, Lead Teacher

Jewish Learning is FUN! Religious school will be starting soon, and we have a fun and exciting year ahead of us! This year brings some changes to the configuration of our school, but it will continue to be an enjoyable and engaging experience for our students. To me, the single most important thing that a student can take away from Jewish education is a love for Jewish learning. The other teachers and I are looking forward to working together to create compelling, active lessons that follow the time tested curriculum already in place. Changes to the organization of the class arrangement ensure that our students will thrive through a sense of community among their peers, and a variety of activities. But regardless of what the lessons contain, when students leave class excited to come back next week, or talk about any bit of what they learned, or want to think more deeply about it, then I consider that class to be a success. My goal is to make sure that all of our students have a positive, engaging experience this year and I know that we as a team will make that happen!

60th Anniversary Gala is Nov. 3!

Don’t miss the social event of the year! It’s Temple Sinai’s 60th Anniversary Gala which will take place on Saturday, November 3rd at the Crowne Plaza.

As you enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, you can socialize and reconnect with old friends. Following the cocktail hour, dine on a sumptuous meal while the Nightlife Orchestra entertains. During the evening, there will be a short program honoring our distinguished founding families and longtime members. An opportunity to bid on a fabulous one-of-a-kind Toots Zynsky piece and, of course, our grand drawing will cap off the evening. Replacing the auction, this event is our main fundraiser of the year!

We urge and need your presence! You won’t be sorry. It promises to be an evening to remember! Invitations will be arriving in September!
