Eyes and ears of the industry on the Internet In an interview with Rick Camilleri, president of

Sony Music Entertainment Canada (RPM -

Feb. 1/

99), he expressed optimism about the "digital frontier" and the evolving of MP3. "It's all just part

of the digital evolution of the music business," he said. "You can look at all of the new technologies

as either a threat or a great opportunity." Obviously Sony sidestepped the "threat"

aspect and made moves to treat the new technologies as an "opportunity." About the same

time as the Camilleri interview, it was reported by

a Japanese newspaper that Sony Music Japan had become the first major record company to allow Internet users to download music onto mini -discs

for a fee. Sony Japan apparently declined any comment on the report which may have been media

speculation or a leak. It has now been revealed however, that Sony

is among the five major record companies; BMG Music (Bertelsmann), EMI Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music, who have endorsed the

Madison Project, a digital music distribution system that International Business Machines (IBM) has

been working on for the last year or two. The system

allows record buyers to purchase albums through digital signals that are sent to their personal

computers over the Internet. Apparently IBM and the five major labels have

been in talks for the past year. "It's actually a part of a bigger initiative," explains Brian Robertson, president of the Canadian

Recording Industry Association (CRIA), "in which for the first time the record industry, as represented by the five majors, is getting together with not only the computer hardware people ie, IBM, but also

software companies like Microsoft, service providers and hardware manufacturers, and all of

them have got the same objective that by the end of this year to come together to develop a secure system for putting recorded music on-line."

Canada has kept abreast of the evolvement of The Madison Project, where much of the cost was

underwritten by the five major companies, with IBM reportedly absorbing a large chunk of the costs

as well in developing the project. The project will be initially tested in San Diego over the next few

weeks where a couple of hundred households will be able to pick from approximately 200 titles on the Madison Project Internet site.

Robertson represents Canada on the International Federation of Phonographic Industries

(IFPI) council, the international organization, who together with the Recording Industry Association

of America (RIAA), are coordinating the whole

process. Robertson has met with these organizations three times over the past year, pointing out that it

was "purely on this issue," elaborating with "The music on-line issue is the most critically -important issue of anything at the present time, which is

consuming a lot of time and energy and money, but itis the number one objective to try and come up

with a solution. "But it certainly is encouraging that at a relatively early date they're prepared to do this test

which rather suggests they have something that's

Warner/Chappell's Mech to keynote NSAI meeting

Andrew Mech from Warner/Chappell Music has been firmed as the guest speaker at the next

songwriting seminar of the Toronto Regional Workshop of the Nashville Songwriters Association

International (NSAI). The seminar will take place Feb. 23 beginning

at 7:30 pm at the Lester B. Pearson Catholic School in Brampton, Ontario. Mech will critique songs

from those attending. For more information call Dan McVeigh at

worth exploring." According to other reports the five majors have

been anxious to get involved in the digital music market, obviously in view of Internet music piracy

that has been escalating. They were somewhat stonewalled however because of the lack of

technical and legal controls. It has also been revealed that the Madison Project experiment will bring proper focus on the

development of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), a program that will allow the five majors

to set guidelines for digital distribution systems in conjunction with a number of technology

companies. The majors were obviously impressed with the Madison Project technology which is being touted

as not only providing an efficient method of delivering music to record buyers on-line, but is

secure enough to protect their copyrights. The digital musical signals will be encrypted to prevent

unauthorized copies being made. It takes less than six minutes for a purchaser to receive an album

digitally. However, should there be a foul-up on the Internet, IBM has reportedly instigated a

conventional mail order system.

with Elvira CapreeseWas that BIG news or what??? Brutal, that'swhat it was, and not very kind to the people whomade the station work for the past three and a halfyears. That's the way big businesses work I guess.Maybe Allan Waters should publish a what -to-dohandbook on handling employees and changingformats for his fellow broadcasters. I think that'sone of the reasons he's being honoured at the Junosthisyear. (EC: Right on!!!)

An endorsement??? Last Tuesday night GlobalNews spent more than three minutes praising thecoming issue of Sports Illustrated that features swimsuits. Hello? Either Global's news editors don't readthe papers or listen to the news or they're opposedto Bill C-55. They're not in the magazine business

. . yet! (EC: You know something we don't???)

Birds of a feather??? That guy who made allthe money from unsuspecting artists a few years

ago is rumoured to be the money behind anorganization that has a deep well, and lots of debtsthat he didn't know about. He thought he wasbacking a real winner and a vehicle to gain afoothold back into the industry. Apparently it'sbackfired. Don't know all the details yet, but I knowwe'll get phone calls, and I know I'll be accostedby Tricky Billy himself. (EC: Lucky you!!!)

Rita Chivera makes Chicago!!! It was morethan a couple of decades ago when a young hoofernamed Rita Chivera took a starring role in BobFosse's Chicago. She returned for the Ed and DavidMirvish Toronto production, and puts on an amazingdisplay of professional hooferism that's rare intheatre today. The ticket is worth the price just towatch this veteran make all the moves, keeping upwith the youngsters of the cast. If you thought shewas great in Spider Woman, you've gotta seeChicago. The show is running at Toronto's PrincessOf Wales Theatre for the next few weeks. (EC:There aren't too many veterans left!!!)

And the party??? The party for the Chicago castwas held on the third floor of the new IndianMotorcycle watering hole on the King Street strip. It wasn't the same kind of party we're used to. Thefood was just so-so, but we did have a bunch ofIndian bikes to stare at. I never knew they were sougly until I came face to face with them. There areabout half a dozen on each floor, and they're all litup for the visiting firemen. They're actually veryclumsy looking. Maybe they're okay for the pretendriders, but I'll take my hawg anyday. In fact I'd

CISS kisses off country for Rogers' Power92Shocking, quick and brutal was the action takenlast week when Toronto's only country music outletCISS-FM shed its format for what's described as"pop Power92". The change was made known onlya couple of hours after RAWLCO had announcedthe sale of the station to Rogers, who also ownToronto station's CHFI-FM and 680 News (CFTR).The deal still has to be approved by the CRTC.

The shock within both the music and broadcastindustries was immediate when, without warningthe station launched its new format with a heavydose of hip -hop and dance. The new format wasn'tthat foreign to the station's listeners who have hadto put up with non -country crap bookending newcountry and some traditional country for the threeand a half years they've been on the air. It was thecontinuation of the hip -hop and dance noise thatsounded the alarm bells, but it was a weekend, sono phones.

As it turned out, the station was airing acontinuous tape. Most of the employees had beenturfed on the Friday (Feb. 5) after a sumptuous mealat an upscale restaurant within walking distance ofthe station. They apparently weren't allowed backinto the station.

There had been some speculation thatsomething was amiss when CISS morningpersonality Cliff Dumas quit to return to his oldalma mater, CHAM in Hamilton (RPM - Aug. 31/98) where he has been attracting his faithfullisteners to his morning show. Ironically Jeff Lumbyand Mike Richards came in from Hamilton's Y-95to take over the morning show.

The popularity of country radio has been in atailspin for several months both in Canada and theU.S. A report issued by Stats Canada in Septemberof last year, signalled the downward trend in radiolistening, and country radio was at the bottom, drawing only 13.4 per cent of listeners (RPM - Sept.14/98). The largest share of listeners (38.7 per cent)was for the adult contemporary and oldies rockmusic formats.

Country listeners can still get a steady diet ofreal country music by tuning into CHAM-AM that

covers a good portion of the downtown Toronto area, and to the east, KX96FM Durham (Oshawa),expected to have an increase in its power to coverthe Toronto area.

Bon voyage to Vince Parr!!! It's off to Manilafor Vince Parr who did much to popularize theTower Record Store at the corner of Queen andYonge Streets. He actually opened the store, threeand a half years ago, and was the spark that broughtin all those visiting artists, even large choral groups. He is leaving the end of May to become the Directorof Operations for Tower Records Phillipines. Hehas been with the Tower organization for more thanfive years. They are now accepting applications forhis replacement. Another Tower store will open inMel Lastman Square on the Empress Walk later onin the year. His replacement as Executive Directorof ARMEC will be announced shortly. Too bad hewon't be here for the opening of the new store. (EC:It's warmer in Manila!!!)

There's trouble brewing!!! I don't want to spoilwhat should be a great party, but tempers are aboutto explode over some very touchy issues that haveeven found their way back to Toronto. There's anew bunch of organizers who got caught up bypeople who have years of experience in the pushingand shoving way of doing business. Some thoughtthe guy who created the whole thing was nuts. Thinkagain! His only goal was to push the event, notfeather his nest and stable. (EC: Oh! Oh! Nowyou've done it!!!)

East Coast Music AwardsConference

The stage is set for the 11th annual ECMA awardsAfter three hectic days of seminars and showcasing of Atlantic Canada artists, all neatly packed into theDelta St. John's Hotel, the scene shifts Sunday evening (Feb. 14) to the Memorial Stadium for the EastCoast Music Association's 11th annual awards show.

The show, hosted by Rick Mercer, will be televised across Canada live by CBC-TV, expected to bethe biggest extravaganza in the awards history. The show has been sold out for several weeks.

Seated among the sea of east coast music fans will be a large representation of the Canadian musicindustry, including presidents and senior management staff from all the major labels, now boasting five, down from six last year, and independent labels, booking agents, radio and television personalities, managers, club owners, record producers and video directors, recording engineers, songwriters, publishers, graphic designers, CD and vinyl manufacturers and the list goes on. And they will be rubbing shoulderswith a huge representation of the very talent they have come to see, among them established artists andhopeful beginners from each of the five Atlantic provinces; Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, which has been afforded the distinction of being on an evenfooting with the other four provinces.

PEI's Linda Doyle gets nod from U.S.Teresa Doyle, a well-known children's entertainer from Prince Edward Island, has received an American Library Association award for "notable children'srecording."

Doyle has been nominated in the Children's Artist/Group category forthis weeks East Coast Music Awards, and was also nominated for a '99 Junoaward in the Best Children's Album category, both for her album If Fish Couldsing.

Plaudits for Doyle's album have come from both Canada and the U.S."The songs feature Teresa's warm and lovely voice along with a charmingchildren's chorus. She blends traditional songs with some very hip arrangementswithout sacrificing the integrity of the original music. Already an establishedperformer in the adult arena, I hope she continues to offer her Celtic gems forchildren" from Chicago Parent. And, from The Gig, Atlantic Canada, "Thevocals are as good as any in the Celtic genre. The arrangements are simple yetsophisticated and the songs are classics."

McLachlan trial resumes in B.C. Supreme Court The ongoing saga of Darryl Neudorf's civil action against Sarah McLachlan and Nettwerk label owners Mark Jowett and Terry McBride has resumed in the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver after having been adjourned in December.

Neudorf's action alleges that he was denied proper credit and compensation for songwriting and production work on Touch, McLachlan's 1988 debut album.

Jowett has apparently told the court that "songwriting was not part of the job description" when he offered Neudorf a job doing preproduction work on the album. He did offer however that Neudorf was hired to keep McLachlan

"focused on her work and to get her ideas down on tape." McLachlan, whose talent came to Jowett's attention in 1986 when she was going to high school in

Halifax, was apparently "easily distracted" by Vancouver's night life and, according to Jowett, Neudorf's job was to keep her in line for her recording

project. It's expected the trial will conclude the second week in February.

ECMA honours industry in seven categories The East Coast Music Association (ECMA) will

mount its annual tribute to the behind -the -scenes people who have contributed so much to the

advancement of music from Canada's east coast, at an industry brunch.

THE WAYWARD ANGELS - Roots/RockSelf -titledRed Rows Music -004Although this country quartet is based inToronto, the Atlantic Canada connection isfairly obvious. That connection comes from theband's founder and chief songwriter MichaelBrennan, a native of Inverness, Nova Scotiawho looks after lead vocals and is heard onguitar. Brennan's natural tall -tale -telling fitsperfectly with the smooth, sometimes raucous, and always dead -on instrumental and vocalassist from the other bandmembers: JohnDavis (guitar, backing vocals), Dino Naccarato(drums) and Frank Randazzo (bass, mandolin, backing vocals). Brennan solo -wrote all thematerial with the exception of Sober thinking, which he wrote with Davis, a very funny outingloosely based on a country song titled I Got AThinking Problem. Brennan's vocals are warm, sometimes gentle and quite often on the edge, which makes for a unique escape into his songmessage, sort of a one-to-one communication. Also key is You've Been On My Mind,Anywhere But Here and One Of These Days, which is more country than the other tracks. Also check out Back Home and Out Of Time.Nice guesting by fiddlemeisterAaron Solomon,Chris Whitley on pedal steel and mouth harpand Matt Putnam on background and harmonyvocals. The title track was written byNewfoundland housewife Madeline Thomsonin 1993 in anticipation of the wedding of theeldest of her four daughters, Amanda. Shewrote the song because she could find littlequality music written specifically for the dancebetween the bride and her father. A veryemotional piece that has resulted in Thomsonbeing asked to perform the song at weddingsthroughout Newfoundland. McDermott,Canada's leading tenor, was so impressed withthe song he made it a priority for a recordrelease where it could now become an anthem

for weddings from coast to coast, if notinternationally. Three of the songs here,Guardian Angel and Friend Like You, writtenby Keith Potger, and Voyage, written by JohnnyDuhan were previously released onMcDermott's Love Is A Voyage album. Alsoincluded here is Postcard From Paris, thepreviously unreleased song given personallyto McDermott by its writer Jimmy Webb(MacArthur Park) and recorded specifically forthis album. McDermott produced bothPostcard and the title track, the latter arrangedby Eric Robertson and recorded with theVancouver Symphony Orchestra at the ChanCentre in Vancouver last August. No MAPLlogos, but it's safe to assume all tracks are atleast two -parts Cancon. -WG

THE COCKRUM SISTERS - CountryMystery To MeCS -98Contains an all -enveloping smooth prairiesound that comes naturally from theseMeadow Lake, Saskatchewan sisters;Lorraine, Laura, Bonnie and Carol. There's nopretention here. Their sound is their own withvocals nicely layered with emotion andconviction that underlines the writing talent ofthree of the sisters; Carol, Bonnie and Lorraine. This is their fourth album and the first thatconsists entirely of their original music. They

hired a production specialist, DeclanO'Doherty, who has a long list of studio credits, having worked with Rush, Emerson, Lake andPalmer and Rita MacNeil. The title track isnatural for a single release. Also key is HeavenHelp, Couldn't Get Much Colder and Run ToYou. Various studios were used for therecording, which were Cape Breton'sLakewind Sound, Toronto's Inception Soundand Saskatoon's Sound Edge. That prairiesound isn't restricted to country. There's adefinite pop or contemporary approach thatcould see some crossover action. A solidrelease that should add to their road show overthe summer and into the fall. JUDY KAMMINGA - Easy ListeningVisions of FreedomJK-1There aren't too many stand-alone celticharpists who can capture on record the realenchanting sound of this very complicated

Lr 'iisionsFreedom',

instrument, but capture it New Brunswick'sJudy Kamminga does, with an exceptional flair.Kamminga's program includes bothinstrumental and vocal tracks. Theinstrumentals: The Muse (wind through theharp strings), David's Peace, Fiddlehead Syd,and Lyra's Lullaby, are stunning works. But it'sKamminga's vocal charm with an easy speakthat surrounds her centuries old instrumentwith a fashionable today's approach and aprojection that is haunting and almost spiritual. All the material here was written by Kammingawith the exception of the title track, an EmilyCarr original. She is joined by producer LloydHanson who doubles on basses and guitars;Chris Buckley of the Saint John String Quartet

on viola; Mike Doherty who doubles on congasand talking drum; and Debbie Adshade onbacking vocals. Key track is Kamminga's dueton Soul Love with Modabo's Michael Doyle. Also check out Winding River, HumanExpense, inspired by the life of Princess Diana, and Isle of Avalon which features JohnThompson's waterphone. Recorded atFredericton's Reel North Recording Studios. For product call 506-832-7975. -WG

KIM DOOLITTLE - Country BluesNatural Born WomanDoo-A-Little Music -1998A serendipitous example of better late thannever. Though she's a staple of the Torontomusic scene we hadn't heard Kim Doolittle until

her album was assigned to us to review, presumably as jazz. One wishes we had heardher much earlier. No doubt she could sing jazzexclusively, given her excellent phrasing andflexibility of tone, but she's at her best singingearthy Country with just a soupcon of Bluesto keep listeners intrigued. All but one of theeleven songs are her own compositionallowing her the proper and preferredpresentation of each with technique but noapparent affectation; only honest vocalizing. With proper airplay this could and should beher breakout to the bigs. Produced by Doolitleand Douglas Romanow. 100% MAPL. -BW

ALBUM PICKVARSITY BLUESVarious ArtistsHollywood/Universal-62177-JThe movie has already enjoyed two weeks as the #1 box office smash and is still up in theTop 5. The soundtrack made its debut on the RPM 100 CDs chart last week at #49 andlooks like t won't stop until it hits #1. The reason for all the excitement is in the grooves, acompilation of tracks by a number of popular alternative rock artists that are breaking now.Collective Soul are happening right now with Run and they're doing pretty good with Heavy, their Atlantic single, but that's another label.Other solid radio friendly tracks include VanHelen's Hot For Teacher, Hero by Foo Fighters,Green Day's Nice Guys Finish Last, Are YouReady For The Fallout? by Fastball, none ofwhom are strangers to the chart. Also expectto see some radio nods for Loudmouth's Flyand Janus Stark's Every Little Thing Counts. But while you're scanning this CD, check outMonster Magnet's Kick Out The James andThunderstruck by Sprung Monkey. They couldcapture a big part of that alternative rockaudience. With the popularity of the movie andwith the anticipated radio play of several ofthe tracks, front -racking this album could resultin impressive sales. The album was producedby Mitchell Leib, Brian Robbins and Mike Tollin. Having Dawson Creek's hulk James VanDer Beek starring as second string quarterback John Moxon and his coach played by JonVoight can only add to customer interest. Check out the movie and you'll get a double run ofadrenalin when you listen to the music at home. -WG
