Essential Questions

Essential questions drive students to not just learn the “right answers” but to learn how to think, question, and continually learn. The discussed essential questions are in bold under announcements.

Homework Information:

We will start regular homework this week. I would like to review homework routines and policies in this newsletter so everyone is on the same page.

Every week I will send home a weekly homework assignment sheet in your child’s red folder. The activities for homework will be written on the sheet. Monday will be math and a journal assignment. The journal assignment is due Friday and it is a writing assignment. I will send home a red composition book in the folder. Inside the book is a stapled piece of paper.

What does it look like to be a good listener?

How can you show your mental math work on paper?

What strategies can you practice during silent reading to practice comprehension?

The picture above and the two below show scientists practicing their skill of sorting. The students were given objects to sort and they collaboratively decided on how. Most groups sorted by color or size. This activity led to a discussion about seeds because the objects were in fact seeds. We listed lots of wonderings we have about seeds and made science teams.

The first sheet of paper is for learning activities that will be completed on spelling days. The second is the journal choices. Your child can choose any activity on the sheet to complete. Once they choose an activity, they need to put an “X” on that activity so they don’t choose it again. Journal entries are due Friday. The rest of the assignments are due the following day.

Homework Policies:

If your child is frustrated with any assignment please have them stop. I don’t want homework to be stressful. Just write a note at the top of the paper and send it back to school. I will guide them back on track.

Forgotten homework is ok once in awhile. Mistakes are made and we are all human. I am trying to teach responsibility with bringing back homework everyday. Please hand the responsibility over to your child and ask them to put it in their folder and back pack every night.

Any assignments not turned in will be given back to be completed over the weekend.

Please email me with any homework questions!
