Leader Required for Easy Metro Walk

As convenor for the Easy Metro Walks, I am currently looking for some-body to lead an Easy Metro Walk on 27th September 2021. It is an easy ramble around Westerfolds Park and would suit anybody living anywhere near that area. It was last led by Hugh Gibson back in 2017 and I have all his notes on this walk.

I can be contacted on 9717 0909 or 0405 083 074. Gordon Proudfoot.

Death of Peter Schulz

I regret to advise that Peter Schulz passed away on 19th November.

Peter had been a member of the Club since 2001 (when he moved from Hobart). He led many Wednesday walks and several 3rd Wednesday walks. He was a good walker and I valued him as a friend. He and I went on many "reccees" together as well as regular Club walks and bus trips. He was a relatively private person but often reminisced on his time as a member of the Hobart Walking Club (of which he had been a member for many years). He was a good photographer and had many of his photos published in the monthly circular. He also took great joy in attending per-formances of "Morning Melodies."

I believe he is survived by a wife, daughter, and son - all living in Hobart.

He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace, Peter. Gordon Proudfoot.

Visitors Fee

A $5.00 fee is now charged to all visitors attending club walks. Walk leaders are to collect the cash from each visitor.

Trevor Rosen, President.

Vision Test

A man goes to the optician for his annual eye test. The optician puts a contraption on his face, and asks him what he can see.

"I see empty airports and empty football grounds," he says. "I see closed theatres, closed pubs and closed restaurants."

"That's perfect," says the optician, "You've got 2020 vision."

An Opportunity To Walk The Goldfields Track In 2021

Have you always wanted to walk the Goldfields Track from start to fin-ish? This is your chance to walk the entire track from its start at Mt Bu-ninyong near Ballarat to its conclusion in Bendigo. The walk will be divid-ed into fourteen sections of one day walks. Most sections will be be-tween 14 and 18 km. The total distance is 210 km. We may decide to stay overnight for one or two days at accommodation along the way. The first stage of the walk will be on Sunday 28 March and the second stage will be on Sunday 25 April.

This walk has been previewed and is being organised by Kim Rosen. Only three people in the club have expressed an interest in walking the track so far. If you are interested in walking the track next year it is im-portant that you contact her to discuss your availability and the logistics of the walk. The Boroondara Bushwalking Club is very interested in tak-ing your places if MWC numbers are low. Contact Kim on [email protected] or 0422 804 816.

The Murray River

Where the clouds rest on the ranges, and the gum trees drip with rain

Where the Tree ferns crowd the gullies and the Ridges stand out plain

Rock ledges gleam with moisture, moving down to the valley floor That's where the mighty Murray River, starts it's run to a distant shore

At first, merely a trickle of water, between the rocks and ferns

Seen only by timber cutters, as their lonely bread they earn

Fed by melting snowfields, from distant mountain peaks

The stream becomes a great river, as through the range it leaps

The river bounds with ageless youth, clear, strong and young

As the black fellow must have seen it since time begun

Soon it leaves the Ranges, wending out to lowly hills and plain

The river lost its youthful joy, which, like us, won't come again

She runs into a man made lake held back by a concrete dam

The wild river, tamed and managed, for the benefit of man

A million lights will flicker, a million homes will glow

There's millions of lives depending on the Murray River's flow

The Murray River leaves the dam, wends across an irrigated plain

Meandering slowly south, then north and south and north again

The Murray River wanders slowly, seaward in an ever twisting line

To travel one mile forward, it seems to meander nine.
