editor's note 2 The 22nd. Biennial Golden Anniversary Convention of Sigma Theta Tau was held in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 24, 25, and 26, 1973. The host for this occasion was Alpha Chapter, the first chapter of the National Honor Society of Nursing. During these past 50 years the Society has grown to an organization comprised of 55 chapters with over 1700 members. The convention was highlighted by the recognition given to its Founders and by the keynote speech of Dr. lngeborg Magksch. The central theme of Dr. Mauksch's mes- sage to the members of Sigma Theta Tau was the challenges facing Nursing as a profes- sion and its need to draw nurses together so that a "we" feeling is permeated among its membership rather than an "I" feeling. Colleagueship and cohesiveness become critical to the future survival and direction of the nursing profession. Sr. Rosemary Donley, First Vice-president of Sigma Theta Tau, and Dr. Shirley Karlson, President of Alpha Chapter, have responded to the keynote speech by Dr. Mauksch in their articles for tt.is issue. The growth of new membership includes the initiation ceremony by Alpha Eta Chapter, li.iiversity of California, San Francisco, June 6, 1974. The keynote speech for this occasion by Dr. Hildegarde Peplau is included in this issue as part of the general theme of Sigma Theta Tau's 50th. Anniversary which celebrated its past as well as its future.
