Introduction :

This is the most sensitive topic of our State (Tamil Nadu) at present . This brought lot of issues and problems to deal with , which is continuing at present too . This topic is BIG and its too hot to move with .. So we did it with no Questionnaire , but with Observation and Newspaper references !

WHAT’S HAPPENING ??????

In Tamil Nadu (Especially in Madurai) , there is

Power Cut for more than 7 Hrs/Day . But in

Chennai there is less than 3Hrs/Day . This

happens because of the only reason that there is

NO MNC’s in Madurai . But there is still a

confusion that whether the power cut is

implemented by the GOVERNMENT or the

ELECTRICITY BOARD …

These Issues by the Government or by the Electricity Board ?????

There is some partiality in Madurai itself . The

Power Cut in areas differ from place to place ..

For example in Bye-Pass Road the power cut

lasts for 7 to 8 Hrs a day . But in TVS Nagar it

lasts for just 30 Mins or less . Because of the

reason that you know Thus Power Cut differs

and suffers all the people in and around Madurai

..


Another major difference is that the Power Cut

lasts for 10 to 12 Hrs/Day in the villages around

Madurai . This stops them from using motors for

Water supply in Agriculture . It makes their work

difficult . It is not fair making difficulties for the

India’s National Job .


Many people are still in confusion and they need

to know whether the GOVERNMENT or the

ELECTRICITY BOARD which is responsible for the

Power Cuts that is happening at present . But the

reason is unknown and it remains still Unfound .

Might be they are playing together or playing

against each other ..


REASONS FOR POWER CUT :

The Reasons for Power Cut is many when

we see it as a whole .. But the major

reasons are somewhat less in number ,

which should be noted and worked on it to

achieve 100% Power supply in our State .

The Mistakes for the lack of Power Supply

is in all sides such as Government ,

Individuals , Companies and Industries ,

Politics , Family etc. . To Overcome the

present situation of Power Cut , not only

the Government and their officials must

work , But also each and every individual

must work or co-operate with them to

vanish the Power Cut in Tamil Nadu ..

REASONS FOR POWER CUT :

Lack of Power Generating Units are less in

numbers .

Koodankulam Issue .

Inadequate power generation capacity .

Wastage of Power that is supplied to the

Commercial Purpose such as Malls , Theatres ,

Factories and Industries .

Lack of optimum utilization of the existing

generation capacity .

Demand of Power is more than the Supply .

Politicians or the Party that rules Tamil Nadu

plays a Important Role in the Power Cut

problems .

The above seen are the main and major reasons for the Power loss in Tamil Nadu . These things increased the Demand of Power in the state for all the household and commercial purposes . The generated Power was Lesser than what is demanded . This created a scarcity of Power inside the State . This Resulted in the Power Cut that we are facing now-a-days ..

The Power Cut created lots of IMPACTS on all life's and their Jobs , such as Individual , Family’s , Small Scale Industries , Large Scale Industries and Multi-National Companies . Let Us see about the Impacts on each of them in the Following Slides …

IMPACT OF POWER CUT

IMPACT ON INDIVIDUALS :

Students found it diffi cult to study in the Nights . Middle Class people found it hard to rest after their works . Patients found it tough to sleep , since power shuts at night t imes . Many Infants was much bothered because of the power cuts now and then . Women and Girls found it diffi cult to walk and reach home during the dark . 10 t h and 12 t h students marks may be decreased for sure . Mobile , Laptop users suff er without charge .

IMPACT ON FAMILIES :

Usage of all new Cookware's such as Toaster , Electric Stove etc. are not in use most of the time . Other House-Old items such as Heater , TV , Air Conditioner are also not in use . Electricity Bil l ing charges got high . Need of purchase of Inverters . Charging batteries now and then because of Power Cuts often . These above things increased the cost of l iving to the highest .

IMPACT ON SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES :

The production of the industries is Decl ined/Decreased . They lack in their own del ivery schedule . Purchase of Generators for Uninterrupted Power Supply . Increase in their Expenses (Getting Diesel or Petrol for the Generators that they use) . Many Employees sent out of the Industries , because of the Loss they are facing . Many Industries are on the Verge of Closure .

IMPACT ON LARGE SCALE INDUSTRIES AND MNC’S : Purchase of Generators and Other Higher End Alternatives . Uninterrupted Power Supply from Government at High Costs . Industries couldn’t del iver goods to the Consumers at given t ime . Employees Problems . Heavy Losses . Expenses at present is much higher than their Normal Expenses .

THE REAL IMPACT : The Powerloom Industry at Sankaran Kovil , which employs

around 25,000 people is likely to be Closed . This is because of

the Power Cut that is effective at present (8 Hours) . The weavers

who weaved 5 sarees a day , is not able to make 2 sarees at

present . This made the weavers to get paid less . This is why the

owner(s) of the Powerloom Industry has decided to sell or lease it

. But None is interested to get it because they fear the Power Cut

may go UP in summer . So it nears a Closing Stage …

Many of the Small Scale Industries that comes under the

control of Thoothukudi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries

Association (THUDITSSIA) , is likely to be closed because of the

reason that the Owners could not manage with the Power Cut

that is implemented now-a-days .

THE REAL IMPACT : There was a case in Madurai High Court , that Supply of Power

for the IPL matches held in the MA Chidambaram Stadium in

Chennai must be cancelled so that lot of Power can be saved .

This petition was forwarded to Chennai High Court where , the

Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO)

gave a perfect Answer for what the petition was filed .

The Power Cut affects Students of both 10th , 12th Standard

from preparing themselves for their Public Examinations , So

that the Results would be decreased to 10% to 15% from the

previous year’s performances .

While the power demand is increasing by 10% in the state, there

has been no major capacity addition over the last several years .

New Electric consumer tariff applicable in Tamil Nadu effective from April 01,2012:

Domestic New Electricity Tariff Rates: Up to 100 Units - Rs. 1.10 per unit (+Fixed Charge Rs. 10)101 to 200 units - Rs. 1.80 per unit201 to 250 units - Rs. 3 per unit251 to 500 units - Rs. 3.50 per unit

Above 500 units Rates :Up to 200 units - Rs. 3 per unit201 to 500 units - Rs. 4 per unit 501 and above units - Rs. 5.75 per unit

POWER RATES HIKED :Industries New Rate:Rs. 5.50 per unit

Commercial Establishments:Rs. 4.30 per unit up to 100 unitsRs. 7 per unit above 100 units

Temples:Rs. 2.50 per unit up to 120 unitsRs. 5 per unit above 120 units

Private Schools, Colleges - Rs. 5 per unit

Government and Govt-Aided Schools - Rs. 4.50 per unit

For Decorative Lamps - Rs. 10.50 per unit

Power Supply From 2002 – 2008 :

The Power Shortage at present might be around 12% to 13% ..

ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS BASED ON POWER CUTS

Purchase of Invertors and Batteries . Purchase of Generators and Diesel for that to Function . Using the Solar Energy for Household purposes . Shifting Houses to Metropolitan Cities to face Less Power Cut Hours . Planning the Work or Job in the time when the Power is Uninterrupted .Planning the Delivery Schedule according to the Power Cuts and Calculating it . Power Saving - Using Power when needed . If not needed , switching it off .

SUGGESTIONS :

The Government or the Electricity Board can plan the Power Cut in the Morning hours (6 AM – 6 PM) . This can make the people happy that they don’t want to be in the DARK . Using the Power Generated at the KUDANKULAM POWER PLANT as soon as possible . Try to Generate as much Power as possible from the existing Power Plants . Try to open NEW POWER PLANTS with a minimum generating capacity of 1000 MW . Making the price of Invertors and Generators as LOW as possible . Giving a Inverter or a Generator FREE during the ruling period instead of LAPTOPS , GRINDERS , TV’S etc. .

The Bus iness have seen both Ups and Downs , because of the Power Cut . The Ups is that the increase in sa les o f Invertors , Generators , Batter ies , Petro l , D iese l etc . . The Downs is that the decrease of sa les of AC’s , TV’s , Fr idges and a l l o ther e lectron ic Household I tems . The Major change is that the Purchase of LAPTOPS are increased s ince the Power Cut is Implemented . The Desktop sa les is much reduced s ince i t cannot be operated without the Power Supply . Sa les o f Mobi le wi th H igh Battery Backup t ime started to peep up . In a l l bus iness the Del ivery T ime of Products as wel l as Serv ices is much aff ected .

LATEST NEWS ABOUT THE POWER CUT

NEWSPAPERS : The Power Cut is reduced to 2 hours and it will be in effect from 10.04.2012 . (But till date its not been in effect , it just affects) . The Demand for Power in Tamil Nadu is ranging from 11,500-12,500 MW, but the total availability from internal generation, share from central generating station and other sources is only 8,500 MW, leaving a gap of 3,000 - 4,000 MW .The Power Cut is not only in Tamil Nadu . But also in Maharashtra , Gujarat , Goa , Uttar Pradesh , Delhi , Karnataka also . Kudankulam Project is opened , which is expected to Generate 985 MW (Total 2000MW) of Power for our State .

OBSERVED NEWS : The Government is not involved in these types of Long Power Cuts . The Electricity Board does what the Government orders them to do . There was drastic hike in the price of Petrol and Diesel . Agricultural Product prices got high . Banks worked with the traditional way of entering the transactions in notes . House Works get delayed because of the non working of electronic items such as Ignition stove , Washing Machine , Fridge etc. .

“ Many of our generation projects were delayed . We were supposed to get 1,000 MW from Vallur and 600MW from North Chennai by November 2011 , but it will happen by June this year (2012) . “-- An Official of the TNEB .

"What we are going through is a real pain in running our process day in and day out which is a 24/7 working industry where we have 3.5 Lakh people working. There are 312 hours of power cuts in a month .“-- K Purushothaman , Regional Director , NASSCOM , Tamil Nadu .

“What measure we have done is to reduce the usage of lift by 50%. Switching on AC beyond 7 is not considered good for saving energy in the present scenario. Instead of AC we use fans .“-- K V Ravindran , Ramco Systems .

“ We hereby announce restriction for power usage for commercial consumers between 6-10 p.m. All industries will be subjected to one day power holiday in a week from March 1 onwards. “-- Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Ltd (Tangedco) .

“ If it is not possible to avoid power outages for schools, the government will arrange for generator sets. “-- Ms. Jayalalithaa , Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu .

“ Power Cuts are Unavoidable . I have Instructed the officials of the TNEB , that there should be no unannounced power cut.” -- Ms. Jayalalithaa , Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu .
