inferno - a reviewYou’ve heard the expression, ‘Hang on to your seats’, well it seems this phrase wasmade for this movie as Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones take you on a jaw droppingadventure, through Europe’s most famous landmarks, in search of a container thatcontains a virus that could destroy more than half the human population. Director RonHoward brings  you another adaptation for the screen, from the book by DanBrown, ‘Dante’s Inferno’­ a sequel to the riveting “The Da Vinci Code” and not­so­good“Angels & Demons.”

Robert Langdon, (Tom Hanks) a university professor, first wakes up in a hospital,suffering from amnesia. The only thing that is on his mind are images of a scorchedearth going through torment and hell. His doctor, Sienna Brooks, (Felicity Jones) helpshim escape the hospital as an assassin attempts to kill him.

He searches through his possessions in an attempt to recall what happened to him,and finds a Faraday pointer which projects an image of Sandro Botticelli’s ‘Map ofHell’, that has been tampered with and has different writing from the original.  His mindis clouded but he is sure that this is a clue left behind by Zobrist, a billionaire geneticist,who believed that half the world would either die or the earth would go through Dante’sHell ­which are stages of torture based on the ‘Map of Hell’. In order to complete thismajor task, he created a virus called Inferno.

A private security company called ‘The Consortium’ sends agents for Zobrist to helpunleash Inferno.  On the other hand, the W.H.O. works to prevent the virus from beingreleased and the project is headed by Elizabeth Sinskey, an old lover of Langdon’s.After Harry Sims (Irrfan Khan!), CEO of The Consortium, watches a video from Zobrist,which is to be broadcast, he is shocked and turns his back on Zobrist and becomes anally of the W.H.O.

As the mystery  where Inferno is hidden is unfolded, the plot twists and turns and theinevitable drama occurs, with Sienna turning out to be Zobrist’s girlfriend and Langdonand Elizabeth falling in love once more.

With 21% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.4 on IMDB, critics clearly aren’t celebrating thefilm.

I rate this movie an 8/10, as in my opinion Inferno is still a must­watch movie, even withthe bad reviews and comments. Its fast pace and brilliant acting make it an excitingwatch.

why penguins can't fly‘Tag! You’re it!’ cried a swift streak of black and white against the warm blue sky causing its playmate to bounce on the ground,shrieking with laughter.

This was the fate which was promised to the merry penguins. Their own little enchanting meadow, filled with exuberant colours,was the perfect backdrop for their delicious freedom. Like every other bird, their lovely soft wings gave them an elegancebewitching the beholder’s eyes. Living a life with no worries, the penguins were completely carefree.  

One day, a furious storm touched their harmonious heaven, carrying with it peculiar furry individuals. Battered and ill, theirintelligent eyes pleaded for assistance. Soon they were integrated into the affectionate environment and accepted by thetrusting penguins as family. So overwhelmed by fresh company, no one noticed the grave silence which had also arrived withinthe sweet meadow; insects no longer sang and flowers drooped their weary heads, but all seemed well to the caretakers of theland. And their queer visitors? In their cunning eyes grew a glint of great mischief.

After many weeks, a meeting was solemnly called. ‘We have appreciated your hospitality immensely and have discovered thevaluable healing we were seeking for,’ the leaders of the travellers announced. ‘But we have a mission to complete: to return toour beloved family at home and bring them long awaited treatment to their excruciating illnesses.’ 

‘But how?’ an agonised voice cried out, shielding its crafty objection.

‘I don’t know.’ was the slow reply.

‘There is no way we’ll make it in time. They will be dead by the time we arrive!’ another spluttered.

Gasps of horror radiated from the bobbing black and white heads. Compassion flooded each kindly face.

We don’t have a choice we have to try and save them!’ whimpered the canny creature.

 Silence fell for a few moments, then a clear voice carried to all ears, ‘Take our wings.’

Soon after, the shrewd strangers were off, leaving behind promises to return, but taking with them no such intention.

The penguins waited and waited. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Finally, they gathered once more, ‘Our friendsmust be in trouble, we have to go rescue them! The response was unanimous. There were cheers of approval all around.  Soto an enormous adventure they went, meeting numerous toils and tortures on their quest.

Some perished. Others were left behind. At last, only a handful of survivors grasped traces of existence on a floating iceberg.The cold freezing their warm little hearts, they huddled together, holding one another and preparing for the end.

But God saw them and pity filled him. ‘My dear penguins, why are you here?’

‘We were searching for our friends but now we are trapped, and so we are going to die.’ They replied simply, with placidacceptance.

‘That shall not be,’ God said lovingly. Hope shone in their adorable faces as they looked up to pay attention. ‘You have lost yourinstruments of flight and I won't give that again. But you will have instead these devices to master the fish in the ocean!’

And with that, two flippers attached themselves to each bowing pin, and with a ‘splash’ the penguins leaped into the glassywater to fill their stomachs. They then swam to their new home, the almost permanent winter wonderland.

demonetisationOn the night of the 8th of November 2016, Modi unexpectedly imposed a ban on all Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes and shortlyafter imposed restrictions on the deposit and withdrawal what we now know as Demonetisation. This very interestingmanoeuvre has done both good and harm throughout India. Demonetisation was imposed as an anti­terrorist action as wellas a move against corruption, however, many say the side effects of demonetisation have proved to be rather disruptive.Has India taken a step forward that resulted in a step backwards?

It is estimated that about 70% of India’s money remained untaxed as it was stored up in Rs. 1000 notes in the homes ofcorrupt business men and politicians. As expected, demonetisation has hit corrupt officers hard as their bribes are now muchharder to pay. And all the money that they had stored up ­ undetected and untaxed (black money) is now rendered mostlyuseless, draining their wealth. The policy also starves terrorist and extremist groups of supplies, leading them to falter, andtheir plans to waver. There has also been a decrease in drug trafficking in India as much of the money used to finance it wasblack money. So, demonetisation has had positive effects much as Modi had planned.

However, like almost every government action, demonetisation has its downfalls as well. Demonetisation has led toextremely long lines outside banks as people try desperately to gain back their family wealth or their earnings in order to goon living. This means that many people have wasted up to 12 hours of which they could be working or doing somethinguseful rather than standing in queue. Also, crowded areas with blood rising due to frustration proves to encourage for riotsthat break out in queues such as this. There have also been cases of people dying in queues and nobody does anything tohelp as they fear of losing their place in line. Many families are also starving as they no longer have sufficient funding for foodposing the question is this really what the government wants?

Furthermore, this policy has caused many shops to go on strike and India has seen a major decline in gold and diamondsales due to demonetisation, reflecting rather badly on India’s economy. India’s economy has not only suffered majorconsequences but gone backwards as many rural areas have turned to bartering as a means of payment.

Yes, demonetisation has been a positive step as an anti­terrorist and anti­corruption plot, but it has come at a great cost.Demonetisation will probably go down in history as a great move by the government, once temporary struggles areovercome and the deaths forgotten. It has gone both ways but in the greater scheme of things I believe it more beneficialthan detrimental. 

 

 

 

 

In the meantime, in a distant land, the once exquisite wings started to turn dingy and the bones began to jut out like jaggedrocks. With one stroke, God took away the conniving beasts sight in exchange for their wicked thievery. With a despairingrush, they fled to the caves to hide their shame in darkness. They are what we now know as bats.

But far way, against the pure white sheet of snow, the penguins still patiently gaze into the sky; waiting, waiting to see theirfriends again.

brownie 2 waysHebron life is so busy sometimes all we need is some warm brownieswith a glass of milk to boost our energy. But where is the time?Here is a recipe for a very quick and easy "Mug Brownie" which takesless than 5 minutes to make!!Ingredients:2 tbsp oil (or melted butter)¼ cup flour2 tbsp cocoa powder¼ cup sugar½ tsp vanilla extract1 large egg3 tbsp milkOPTIONAL: 1 ½ tbsp coffeeCombine all your dry ingredients. Next, add all the wet ingredients in amug (make sure it's big enough).Mix well until even in colour and consistency.Put it in the microwave for 1 ½ minutes. If it's still gooey, leave it for anadditional 15 seconds.

BUT!! If you DO have the time, here is my signaturebrownie recipe that all my friends absolutely love! Ingredients:10 tbsp unsalted butter­ melted or soft (145g)1­ 1 ¼ cup granulated sugar­ depends on how sweet youwant it (250g)¾ cup cocoa powder (65g)¼ tsp salt1 tsp vanilla extract2 eggs­ beat 1 egg at a time!½ cup flourPreheat the oven to 165⁰C before you start. Combine each ingredient one at a time in a big mixingbowl in the order it is listed in above. Make sure to mix wellas you add each ingredient.Mix until the mixture is even in colour and consistency.Use a baking tray that is not too wide­remember browniesdon't rise as much as other cakes do.Put it in the oven and bake for 25 minutes until nice andsoft, but not gooey.ENJOY!
