The three Ministers present in theAssembly yesterday Messrs GibsonCreighton and Kanoa have placedthemselves on record as not being op ¬

posed to inflicting a legalized opiumtraftic on the country What do theycare for the clearest and most unim-

peachable

evidence that licensed opium

in a former period increased crimeand misery in a fearful degree Whatis it to them that the great majorityof respectable people in the Kingdomarc deadly opposed to legalizing opiumand that all the session petitions havebeen rolling into the House against thethreatened infliction The supportersof license have only two arguments tobring forward One is that licensewould increase the revenue the otherthat it would stop smuggling Neitheris worthy of any consideration Re-

to their logical conclusions theysimply mean first that money is betterthan morals health and life andsecondly that a pound of opiumsmuggled is worse than a ton of thedrug paying duty and license For in

regard to the latter who is so

silly as to suppose that theheavy penalties against

smuggling were devised simpy to pro-

tect

the integrity of Hawaiian law

Those severe punishments were ratherdesigned to make the traffic as rare as

burglary for instance and were pie- -

scribed by those who knew the suscep-

tibility

of the Chinese to the opium

habit the liability of the native Ha-

waiian

¬

race to be seized by the samedestructive ngent and the appallingeffects of the drug on Chinese Hawaiians and people of ether nationali-

ties when it was easily procurable herebefore under license There is no usehowever in going into the merits ofthe question Common sense truthand right have nothing to doN with

Ministerial action these days TheMinisters are consenting to a greatoutrage on the community not from

want of knowledge but from want ofprinciple It is extremely doubtfulthat they are committing this crimeagainst society even for the sake of therevenue or of preserving the publicconscience from the stain of smug-

gling

Judging by their course uponthis and other questions during thepast three months the Ministers areassisting in this foul conspiracy againstthe health and morals of the com--muhit- y

simply because truckling for

the sake of office is the sum and sub-

stance of their statecraft

A VALUABLE INVENTION

It is not often that the Scientific

American shows such enthusiasm overa new invention as it does in the case of

what is called Macadamsfins afterthe inventor John McAdams of NewYork This is a contrivance for almostinstantly stopping vessels even when

going at full speed The inventionconsists in an attachment of fins orside rudders to the vessel on eitherside just forward of the stern Theylie close to the hull when not in use

want of knowledge but from want ofprinciple It is extremely doubtfulthat they are committing this crimeagainst society even for the sake of therevenue or of preserving the publicconscience from the stain of smug-

A VALUABLE INVENTION
