It is a set of annual international awards
bestowed in a number of categories by Scandinavian committees in recognition of
cultural and/or scientific advances. The prize was established in 1895. The Peace Prize is awarded in
Oslo, Norway, while the other prizes are awarded in
Stockholm, Sweden. The various prizes are awarded yearly. Each recipient, or laureate, receives a gold
medal, a diploma and a sum of money, which is decided by the Nobel Foundation. As
of 2012, each prize was worth 1.2 million US$.

Was a Soviet mathematician and
economist. He was the winner of the Nobel
Prize in Economics in 1975 and the only winner of this prize
from the USSR.
Leonid was born on January 19, 1912, to a Russian Jewish family. His father was a venerologist doctor practicing in Saint Petersburg. In 1926, at the
age of fourteen, he began his studies at the Leningrad University. He graduated from the Faculty of
Mathematics and began his graduate studies.

theory.
First and major achievement came in 1938 is ‘Linear programming’.
This is a mathematical method for determining a way to
achieve the best outcome.

that every economy had to be concerned with using prices to control distribution of goods
and material resources.

•In 1957 Leonid Kantorovich was awarded the Nobel Prize with Tjalling Koopmans, for
their development in economic sphere.

of Lenin, in 1967.
