August 13, 2015 Volume LII No. 8-c
Senior Adult Retreat to Fort Caswell, NC
September 14-16, 2015
Cost is $175 a person.
Sign up at the Senior Adult
Bulletin Board to attend.
It is one of the most bittersweet times of the year.
The goodbyes begin as our college students either
return to school or in some cases head off to college
for the first time. Both our pastor and our deacon
chair have freshmen heading out within the next few days,
so a pat on the back and some encouragement would be
welcome for either family.
You, as a congregation, through working at VBS, teaching
Sunday School, chaperoning trips, volunteering on Sunday
or Wednesday nights, and so much more, have played a
major role in shaping their faith. If you have attended
Youth Sundays over the past few years, you are aware our
church has produced solid young men and women of good
character and intelligence. More importantly, they have
learned to love their God and their neighbor. We have been
blessed with their presence.
What I would ask is that we not make the mistake most
churches make at this point. Our work is not over. All too
often, congregations see babies dedicated, watch little
children come forward for children’s sermons, applaud as
energetic tweens perform music, listen to young teenagers
excited about their first mission trip, praise God as they
accept Christ and are baptized, swell with pride as they
deliver well-articulated sermons and then walk as confident
graduates, only to see them off to school and quickly forget
they exist. Let’s be a church that continues to love and
support them as they move into adulthood.
Thank you to those of you who have stepped forward
already to be a prayer partner for one of our college
students. We could use a few more of you. More
importantly, we could use more folks to pray for students
and to support the moms and dads struggling with empty
nest syndrome. When our collegians are in town, please
remind them you love them, miss them, and that they will
always have a home here.

Preparing for Sunday. . .
“Eat to Live” John 6:51-58
This Sunday’s passage is the second half of a conversation Jesus
had with a group of Jews who were confused by his
announcement that he is the living bread sent from heaven. To
the defense of the Jews, Jesus is very graphic when he says that
whoever eats me will live because of me (v. 57b). We recognize
that Jesus is speaking metaphorically here but we also must
understand that we are to “take in” Jesus. Although we do not
actually eat his body or drink his blood, we Eat to Live when we
listen, accept and live Jesus’ commands.
