Following a prolonged period of low economic activity, the outlook for the Kimberley region is finally looking very positive. The signs are clear we are about to commence a period of potentially rapid and prolonged economic growth. This is a great problem to have and one that must not be ignored.

This gives rise to some key questions. Are we ready for a different future? Do we have the mindset, the strategies, capabilities, management structures, focus, resources and experience to effectively manage the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly growing economy?

The key economic drivers of growth in the Kimberley are the start-up and recommencement of several major mining projects, significant spending on community infrastructure and for the West Kimberley the construction and operation of the proposed Kimberley Marine Support Base. All these projects are committed to high levels of local content and jobs.

The agribusiness and aquaculture sectors in the East Kimberley are also continuing to develop as is the cattle industry in the central Kimberley. This is coupled with an improving tourism outlook due to more competitive airfares and the potential for international flights into the Kimberley’s western gateway.

The confluence of these economic drivers is delivering a once in a generation opportunity to create a much more diversified, vibrant economy providing a wealth of jobs, careers, business opportunities capable of benefitting all sections of the community.

2018 KIMBERLEY ECONOMIC FORUM

THANKS TO MAJOR SPONSORS Shire of Broome, Kimberley Development Commission and

Regional Development Australia Kimberley

PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

The region has been comprehensively consulted, the region has been analysed repeatedly, the reports have been written and hopefully read. Now It’s time to act, time to ensure we are ready to facilitate the future.

The 2018 Kimberley Economic Forum is an opportunity to imagine this different future. A future in which the jobs, the economy and opportunities grow. A future that demands we reassess our readiness, our approach and our capacity to successfully maximise the benefits to the wider Kimberley community. And we should also be very mindful that the solutions to yesterday’s problems may not be the solutions to tomorrows challenges.

We invite you to join us at the 11th annual Kimberley Economic Forum where we explore, share and reflect on what we as individuals, communities, businesses, government entities and leaders can do to work together to build a better future for the Kimberley.
