A Message from the President of IASA

Welcome to the 48th Annual Conference of Italian American Studies Association. I would like to extend a warm greeting to all participants, whether this is your first IASA conference, or you are a veteran of many decades. It is an exciting time for Italian American Studies as we continue to grow and adapt, remaining always motivated and responsive to the ever-changing field. Our organization is also confronting a time of many changes. The world of Italian American Studies is a challenging field in which to work, and we will continue to meet and bring inspired individuals together in forums like this, ensuring that IASA contributes to the interdisciplinarity of the current moment while simultaneously remaining committed to our traditional concerns. Four groups of people are responsible for the great experience you are about to have, and we all owe them our thanks:

1. The Conference Program Committee led by Chair Joey Nicoletti (SUNY Buffalo State), with members Rose De Angelis (Marist College), Jessica Femiani (SUNY Binghamton), and Lisa Paolucci (Teacher’s College, Columbia University);

2. The National Italian American Foundation President and Chief Operating Officer, John M. Viola;

3. The NIAF office team led by Events Manager Andrea Bartlett; 4. The exhibitors and donors who contribute both opportunities for learning and those

many extras that make a conference exceptional. Please thank each of them when you have the opportunity. And, choose among the many excellent presentations—tough choices are everywhere. The conference begins with your attending on the first night and listening to experiences of several participants of the University of Calabria and Queens College Italian Diaspora Summer Program 2015 followed by the opening keynote address by guest speaker Robert Cohen. On Saturday morning from 11:30 to 12:30, Frank Lentricchia will read from his newest work, The Morelli Thing, the 1947 unsolved murder of Frank Morelli in Utica, New York. Finally, Saturday night brings the conference to a close with the NIAF Gala Reception. In closing, the Executive Council and Conference Committee would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers and the attendees for their participation. Without their strong support, we could not have a successful conference. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, for we could not accomplish what we do without your continued support. Throughout this conference and beyond, I ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive, and help us shape the future of the Italian American Studies Association. My many thanks go out to all of you. Alan J. Gravano President, Italian American Studies Association

2015 Conference Theme: Italian American Values This year's conference features scholarly and creative presentations and panels focused on the broad theme of the conference: the nature, history, dynamics, and problematics of an Italian American system of values—current and historical, perceived or imagined, personal or social. Present-day Italian American identities are often grounded in systems of values and beliefs emergent from transnational histories. Family structure, religion, state politics, economics, social class, and the experience of migration itself shape these systems of value, which finds expression in personal and communal behavior, expressive, and material culture, and forms of social life, from the family to the larger communities. The persistent American concern with values and ethics in U. S. society has, since the earliest Italian immigration, continued to raise questions about the nature of Italian American and other "ethnic" values in U. S. society.
