he ever spiraling spat between Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg has placed the Brackley outfit at the precipice of unravelling its decisive advantage.

Old wounds between the pair opened up at Spa when Rosberg collected Hamilton on lap 2 with the latter suffering a puncture and eventually submitting into retirement.

Publicly, as in the points table, Rosberg appears to be winning the war with Hamilton making all manner of destabilising accusations against his partner.

There appears to be no easy solution for Mercedes hierarchy with team boss Toto Wolff and non-executive chairman overseeing a volatile situation that appears like it will decline further rather than improve any time soon.

Heading to the Italian Grand Prix at the fabled Monza circuit where there is no substitute for brute power, Mercedes would appear to have the race at its mercy.

Those may be famous last words given the magnitude of the mutiny from within.

It appears that no amount of lecturing from team management can mend the rift between the two Mercedes combatants.

The more the friction between Hamilton and Rosberg lasts, the better chance the likes of Daniel Ricciardo has of coming through and snatching an unlikely title.

A bit like when Kimi Raikkonen came through to claim the 2007 world championship, stealing the crown from the then feuding McLaren pair of Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

ts fast becoming one of the most gripping, bitter and acrimonious rivalries ever to grace Formula 1.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s much publicised clash at the Belgian Grand Prix has confirmed the gloves are most definitely off in this year’s title race. The clash has also ensured this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix is one of the most eagerly anticipated, as the F1 world awaits a reaction.

Its been a rivalry which has threatened to explode all season, beginning with the pair pushing each other to the limit in a battle for the victory at Bahrain, before simmering with incidents in Spain and Rosberg’s alleged deliberate crash to secure pole at Monaco.

However, the lid well and truly came off at Spa causing alarm bells to ring loudly at Mercedes’ headquarters, especially with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo rapidly closing the gap after recording a third win in Belgium.

Plenty of words have been exchanged

Two cars go to war: Mercedes duo set for Monza showdownI

since the now infamous clash between the Mercedes duo on lap two at Spa which effectively ended the Brit’s race after picking up a puncture.

Having been angered and left red faced by the incident which cost the team valuable championship points, Mercedes called a crisis meeting with its drivers last Friday.

The up shot of the clear the air talks will please the armchair fans with the team confirming they will continue to let their drivers race each other.

However, Mercedes bosses flexed their muscles by laying the blame for the clash firmly at the door of Rosberg, who has been reportedly handed a six figure fine. The championship leader also acknowledged his responsibility in the incident and apologised to Hamilton.

“During this meeting, Nico acknowledged his responsibility for the contact that occurred on lap two of the Belgian Grand Prix and apologised for this error of judgement,” read a team statement.

“Suitable disciplinary measures have

been taken for the incident.“Mercedes-Benz remains committed to

hard, fair racing because this is the right way to win world championships. It is good for the team, for the fans and for Formula 1.

“Lewis and Nico understand and accept the team’s number one rule: there must be no contact between the team’s cars on track.

“It has been made clear that another such incident will not be tolerated. But Nico and Lewis are our drivers and we believe in them.

“They remain free to race for the 2014 FIA Formula 1 world championship.”

Mercedes may have taken a firm stance by once again stating that another collision between the two will not be tolerated, but it remains to be seen just how they can police this rivalry which has the potential to escalate.

While the meeting was held to clear the air, deep down behind the scenes both drivers know that the damage to their relationship and trust is beyond repair, adding yet further spice to this weekend’s race.

Lewis Hamilton’s View

Hamilton has shown a range of emotions in the fallout of the Spa clash but there is no doubt the incident hurt him emotionally and in the title race, having slipped 29 points behind his team-mate.

The 2008 world champion was furious after the incident before being angered further following the allegation that Rosberg claimed he crashed into him on purpose to prove a point.

However, now Mercedes has chosen to side with him after pointing the finger of blame at Rosberg, Hamilton can take some solace from that. In many ways, he may feel now that he has the upper hand in this championship battle from a team support standpoint.

Heading into this weekend, Hamilton revealed that despite the incident, he can still work alongside Rosberg.

“There is a deep foundation that still exists for me and Nico to work from, in spite of our difficult times and differences,” said Hamilton in a statement on his personal website.

“We have the greatest team, and the strongest group of individuals who have worked their hands to the bone to give us the best car you see us racing today.

“It’s important that we never forget that and give them the results they deserve.”

“Nico and I accept that we have both made mistakes and I feel it would be wrong to point fingers and say which one is worse than the other,” he said.

“What’s important is how we rise as a team from these situations. We win and we lose together and, as a team, we will emerge stronger.”

With that being said deep down Hamilton will be desperate to beat his team-mate at Monza this weekend to restore some parity in the championship race. Just how desperate he will be remains to be seen.

Nico Rosberg’s View

Likewise Nico Rosberg’s involvement in causing the clash just goes to show how much Hamilton has got under his skin this season.

The German has rarely shown his emotions on track priding himself on being cool both in and outside the car, so to make contact in the manner he did with Hamilton at Spa was out of character.

He described the clash as a racing incident shortly after the chequered flag at Spa, however he has since accepted the

blame for the collision. When analysing his comments from the

Mercedes crisis meeting, it is clear Rosberg has been reprimanded but remains resolute and fully intends to continue to fight hardsfor his maiden title.

“In the days since the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, I have spent a lot of time thinking about what happened during the race and discussing it with the team,” said Rosberg.

“I have already expressed my regret about the incident but, after meeting with Toto, Paddy and Lewis, I wish to go a step further and describe it as an error of judgement on my part.

“The number one rule for us as team-mates is that we must not collide, but that is exactly what happened.

“For that error of judgement, I apologise to Lewis and the team. I also want to say sorry to the fans who were deprived of our battle for the lead in Belgium.”

“Lewis and I have been given clear instructions about how we race each other.

“As drivers, we have a clear responsibility to the team, the fans of the sport, our partners and Mercedes-Benz to deliver clean racing. We take that responsibility very seriously.

“I look forward to concluding the season with hard, fair competition on and off track

Colombia’s Juan Pablo Montoya came through to win an emotionally charged Italian Grand Prix held just days after the horrific 9/11 terrorist attack on America.

As a mark of respect many of the drivers and teams paid tribute to the victims of the disaster by running black pieces of bodywork on the cars.

Coupled with the fallout of the terror attacks, emotions were running high in the paddock with the race taking place just a week after Italian Alex Zanardi suffered a life threatening crash in a CART race

at the Lausitzing. In qualifying, Montoya blitzed the famous

Monza circuit to secure the all important pole position by three tenths of a second from Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher.

Prior to the race Schumacher tried to organise a pact with the drivers to ensure the opening lap of the race was treated like a lap under the Safety Car. However, he was unable to secure the support from the entire paddock.

Come the race Montoya led Barrichello

into the first corner but the Brazilian soon passed the Williams driver for the lead on lap eight.

Barrichello, who electedto compelte a two stop strategy, suffered a problem with a fuel hose at his first stop which saw him lose the lead and advantage to Montoya.

A late charge saw Barrichello catch and pass Ralf Schumacher for second but he couldn’t stop Montoya from taking the win. Michael Schumacher endured a rare lonely race in fourth.

right up to the final lap of the season in Abu Dhabi.”

While Rosberg has taken the blame, he still harbours the most important factor in all of this which is a healthy points lead that will only become increasingly more valuable as the races tick by.

With Mercedes reiterating that any repeat of this incident will not be tolerated, it will be fascinating to see just how far Hamilton and Rosberg will push the boundaries in search of the coveted F1 world championship.

AUTODROMO DI MONZA CIRCUIT GUIDESetup

Monza will see the highest straight line

speeds of any circuit on the calendar. However, there is still a compromise to be found between drag and downforce. Drivers must achieve high exit speeds from the final corner, the Parabolica, and carrying that momentum all the way down the long start / finish straight into Turn One. The higher the exit speed and the better that momentum is maintained, the greater peak speed on the straight will be.

The new Hybrid formula introduced for 2014 has produced Power Units which accelerate right through the range, meaning that speed can be built all the way to the end of the straight - whereas in previous years in may have flattened off a little.

Interestingly, though, what has been seen so far in 2014 demonstrates that top speed is not necessarily defined by the length of a straight - but by the exit speed carried out of the preceding corner.

When assessing wing choices for Monza, the differential between low and high drag in terms of ultimate lap time is surprisingly flat. Of course, top speed is important due to the length and quantity of straights.

However, the exit of the Parabolica, plus the requirements of the Ascari and Lesmo Curves, call for good apex speed - which indicates a need for downforce.

This creates an interesting dynamic in

terms of where you are racing in the pack - one that is very difficult to optimise and will see drivers trialling various options in practice.

If two cars of equal performance are set up with a 20 km/h difference in straight line speed, however, the driver with less drag will always be able to make his way past.

More often than not, this will lead teams to adopt the low drag philosophy in order to avoid being swallowed up in the race.

Engine Alongside Spa, Monza sits at the very

peak of the scale in terms of the demands placed on engines. Sustaining full throttle for a large portion of the lap, the engines run within a very different operating regime to that seen at most other venues - high loads and high RPM for extended periods of time. At these circuits and at this point in the season, those who are treading a fine line in terms of engine life cycle may well suffer.

Tyres Previous seasons have seen a mixture of

one, two and even three stop strategies. However, this year’s allocation of the hard and medium compound remains the same as that of 2013, where almost the entire field adopted a one stop strategy.

The reason for nominating the two hardest

compounds is that potential top speeds at Monza are extremely high - potentially to the tune of 360 km/h with the 2014 Power Units - and are sustained for a significant period of time. The most durable rubber available is therefore required to cope with such forces.

One of the many interesting features of Monza is also the quantity of traction events - especially out of Turns Two and Five. Overtaking in these areas is often prevalent as a result, but this characteristic also places high demands on the rear tyres.

Conversely, the front tyres have a relatively low amount of energy worked through them - but spend a lot of time being cooled down by straight line air flow. Maintaining temperature in the front tyres is therefore a challenge and drivers are often seen weaving a lot to achieve this - particularly in qualifying.

Safety Cars Safety Car probability has traditionally

been relatively high at Monza in both wet and dry conditions - making appearances in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Despite not featuring in either of the past two seasons, the characteristics of the circuit do lend themselves to incident - both in terms of the track action and reliability.
